Now, what juicy LONG zoom lens can I get my hands on to team up with me and my 20D to get me right up to those distant birds?

I already own a lens that reaches to 300 mm (not counting 1.6 crop factor)
It's an ok lens, not a sharpie though.

I mean, I want to be able to COUNT their feathers from 100 feet way.
I mean, I want to be able to see when they are taking a shit, from a distance l
I mean, I want this lens to be so sharp, I can cut the birds with it!!!

Any suggestions how to spend my newly found (saved up) $1000 U.S. ????

Any and all suggestions will be considered. Winner (one who gets me to buy the lens THEY suggested) gets a prize. What that prize is, I'm not quite sure yet....
but don't get your hopes up too much he he.

Thank you,
Markjay

For a about grand,I would suggest the 400 5.6 L Not a zoom (sorry)
At one point I was thinking about selling it.Now it has become my walk around lens on my 20D and hasnt come off in weeks.:thumb
Needs lots of light and @400iso it seems to do the trick.
Oh,and this sucker is SHARP!

:nod go for a prime, not a zoom mark :deal

the 400 5.6 is a sharp sharp lens. you can even put a tamron 1.4x on ($79) and have 560mm... total cost ~$1200 or buy used

other option: bigma (see steve's bird gallery)

This was taken with the 400 5.6 L

The bird was about 70 feet away on a rooftop.

This is a primo lens. I highly recommend it. Click pic for exif.

Thank you for your example image. That's a really nice, sharp, example photo. You didn't mention so I'll ask.... hand held shot?

Thanks for taking the time to steer me in the direction of that lens, it's looking good!

Yep. Hand held. I haven't even tried it on a tripod yet.

Another example.

Hey Mark,

I would say go for a prime. When I use my 80-400 I find 90% of my shots are taken at 400mm. The 400mm looks like a good match for your needs especially with TCs added.

I'm looking for a Canon 400 mm used. I have a few reputable used camera stores I frequent and, I'm on the "list" when one arrives. I agree the 400 prime with a TC is a perfect option for me.

Best regards,
Markjay
