we're giving away a one-year subscription to smugmug (basic account) to the best n00b contributor to dgrin. if you already have a smugmug account, i'll give an amazon gift certificate :deal

so lurkers - de-lurk yourselves, and start posting and contributing. it's easy to contribute in shots - tell the poster how you feel, you don't have to feel obligated to do a full critique (although there's a sticky in the challenge thread on how to critique) ... if all you can muster is "nice shot" well, that's okay too. but you can also tell the photographer how the shot makes you feel ...

in the other forums, contribute if you can answer a question - or if you notice something on page 2 or 3, and no replies, give it a courtesy bump so that others who may know the answer, will see it!

the mods will make nomination and we'll give away the prize in a month - and if this program works, we'll keep it up :thumb

Andy, I think that is a swell idea. You always seem to come up with winners.

Congratulations on another great idea, ginger

_______________

Did I really say that:uhoh . I just decided to read what this "lurker" thing was all about, and there is a post, like that, so untypical, from me.:dunno

Must have my day to want to earn brownie points, not that you don't come up with great ideas, Andy. Of course you do. I personally liked the free dinner one.

What I have been wondering, this is just for newbies. What about the "oldies"?
First to reach? Best after 100,00 posts. Something like that?

A free trip to NY, London and San Fran??????

ginger

Now that is more me............you rock, Andy! (gotta keep that going)

Maybe we could post on forums that we don't usually post on. I could post on people, street scenes and, especially, sports. They won't even know who I am unless you all tell them.

I would LOVE to headout that way, its on my to do list, but I don't know if I can go this year. I'm hoping to get up to Mt Isa to see my mother in law and take some shots for the start of the wet season so that may be our big trip for this year. Its hard to travel when the wee one is so...wee...lol.

Where abouts in Oz are you?

Skippy (Australia) You looking at leaving us, Skip? How's that mount of yours working out?

Birdsville, wont be able to make that this year - but it would be a great photo op.

Here's a couple of happy snaps from the recent Auto Italia in Canberra.

http://img39.echo.cx/img39/1772/owner7eo.jpg
...after a while I stopped taking photos of cars and started photographing people reflected in them. This one is of the owner reflected in the window of his car.

http://img20.echo.cx/img20/516/whatthe5cx.jpg

... and here's his car. Not quite sure what type of Lamborghini it is. I can't find a reference to it anywhere. I remember him saying it's a LHD version and is one of only four in the world.

See the blue Fiat 850 Special to its left? That's my old car *beams*. It won two awards that day and was a real pleasure to drive when we owned it.

Ya know Simon, I have always considered cars to be a waste of money, my last car was a old Corolla, I had it for 18 years, didn't owe me a cent, I only went through one set of tires, one set of brakes, one radiator and one alternator :D
I just gave it away after I got this second hand Falcon :D

Ive had this car for about 6 years now, and fully intend to run it into the ground too :rofl figured they can only get you from A to B, you can only do the same speed limit reguardless of its shape or size, and heck I only drive it to work :D

I'm thinking about going back to USA next year, even though I'm going this year ....... I'm just dreaming :D it don't hurt to dream :D

Nice looking cars you shot there........some folks just look after their vehicles so well, I like the vintage cars....take care Simon...... Skippy (Australia)

Skip, I hear you on the A to B... but I do like my european styling on the older cars. You should see my poor Saab. It was owned by a diplomat before we bought it. Now whenever I open the door, the inside looks like one of those underwater scenes where seaweed sways back and forth - it's full of dog hair... oh and a fair bit of sand from the beach.

Don't think I've washed it in the five years I've had the thing which would explain the dalmation effect on the roof (we have a large oak tree in the front yard).

If I had the money to spare, and the inclination to spend, I'd snap an E-type Jag (or two... I hear you have to do that with Jaguars) - oh and I'd need a full time mechanic as well. Guess I can dream.
http://www.jag-lovers.org/e-type/cdiamond.jpg

If I really didn't have to worry about money then I'd snap a Vector W2 which I've had my eye on for a few years now...

BTW: Congrats Bluey! One year's hosting on Smugmug... gotta be happy with that, mate.

Howdy. I'm Michelle. I've already posted in a few places this weekend, but this looks like an official-type de-lurking place. :D I'm 32 year old desert rat, I live in San Diego, California with one husband and many pets, and I work for San Diego State University and the U.S. Army as a restoration ecologist and botanist. :huh

These are older photos, all taken with my Nikon CoolPix 990. We had extremely record-breaking rainfall this year, so I've been busy with my shiny new Nikon D70. I've got a huge backlog of photos to process from the deserts this spring. I've only been lurking a little while, but I already feel like I've benefitted from the river of knowledge here. So I hope to have even better photos to show soon(ish).

To that end, I just purchased a Canon Rebel Digital XT. It arrives in two weeks. Until then, enjoy these two pics. The first one is my daughter next to a sunflower in our garden. The second one is a killdeer protecting her eggs. I hope to contribute more in the future. Be kind. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/maestros/Smilies/newbie.gif

Well, I posted a few shots in "Landscapes" and one in "Cool Stuff" already, so I guess I'll officially introduce myself here. I live in central California, about 80 miles from Yosemite. I'm just beginning to get a bit more serious about photography. I was an avid backpacker until about a year ago when I contracted Lyme Disease. This left me using a walker for the time being, so my photography is done roadside, inside of a car, or any easily accessable location. It's amazing what can be seen/taken from inside a car window!

Here are some shots I've taken with my Canon D-Reb...

(to get more D Grin members, and for some local get togethers) to start up D Grin local photo/camera clubs?

I love Dgrin and other forums. And learn alot from them.

But I would like to meet (in-person) more photographers, go out and shoot, have some meeting to learn and share our photography.

There are 1000+ people where I work, and we have 800+ acres of land. Farms, gardens, animals, etc. we have endless photo opportunities. I got he OK from my boss to organize a camera club. I can use the land and the many facilities to do this. This will do a few things for them. This would be another benefit to offer employees. Get some great photos to use for publications, websites, etc.

For me, I will be able to learn from others, share experiences, have photo outings. Just like DGrin but LIVE. Not just sitting in front of this dumb computer typing.

My plans would be:
To set-up a club gallery
Have learning days.
Have visiting photographers.
Have photo outings.
Challenges.
And an end of the year show.

DGrin could be our on-line place to meet.

I am not to much into clubs, but I really would like to socialize with other photographers. I don't know to many local photographers around me.

Just an idea? :dunno Maybe others would do the same?

I agree with Ginger, Andy. Brilliant idea!
Loving it here, and wish I could post more. Got my own health site that is very taxing, and between that and editing, it's about all this ol' body can muster.:rolleyes

So I do understand that people need to contribute back. Sometimes people don't realize that contributing just their photos is all that is required. But in fact, if everyone did only that, we'd have no human interaction here, and the learning curve would drop decidedly.

I really enjoy reading all the posts, and my learning curve is based on all of the wonderful photographers contributions here! EXIF's are helpful too! Like I said before, I wish there were two of me!

Thanks for all you do Andy, and to all the others who work so hard here. I hear ya.:thumb

I'm so new I am not sure which pictures are good ones - so I'll add 3 of my personal favorites here. I'm a just-for-fun photographer so I always welcome comments that will help make my memories better and more fun to look at on rainy days...

#1 - my son in Grandpa's Navy hat

#2 - My son in the Bluebonnets last year. I know this one needs adjustment but I haven't worked on it yet. I am still learning Photoshop basics...

I'm coming out of lurking mode - actually, I've posted a few times. I'm absolutely hooked on this forum! I've been viewing photos, catching PS tips, finding photo tips, and looking for other hints and suggestions. It's really been fun digging through digigrin. :D

I live in Southern Callifornia and go to college at CSUSM. I have a family: husband, two teen girls and a spoiled dog. We have our own family website (http://www.schuworld.com) loaded full of photos from the past several years - I also have a web site of scanned photos that I built for my mother and my oldest daughter has her own site as well. We're geeks. I've gotten fairly good at PS, but just getting started with a decent camara. Bought a Canon Digital Rebel and have been enjoying it immensly!

One of my daughters plays on her high school volleyball team, which is the main reason why I want to get hints here - I need help with taking fast action shots in the poorly lit gyms. I'm looking forward to getting some good shots of her playing ball. In the meantime, I've been taking pictures of everything else.

ok - that should de-lurk me! :): Mary

get it over with... I've been lurking for months now. I posted for the first time over in the techniques section a couple of weeks ago here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=16925) .

I had an old Pentax Program Plus 35 mm SLR that I shot with since I was in high school - loved the flexibility of a SLR, but I was notorious for shooting half rolls of film and forgetting about them (pull a roll out to shoot something else, put it in a bag, and *poof* find it a year later and wonder what the heck it contains...). I wanted to go digital, but it wasn't until the 20D came out that I felt it was worth the plunge (I had a 1 Mpix P&S, but there was nothing serious about that).

I mostly shoot landscapes and "objects" (architecture, monuments, etc). I'd like to get better at shooting people and overall learn better technique, so that's why I'm here. I live in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado, so there's no shortage of nature-inspired images, yet I really haven't taken that many pictures here (funny, eh?).

Here's one I took this winter while on vacation in Rome:

Greetings from Scotland!!! :thumb

I'd first off just like to say thanks to all but especially to Ginger_55 and Andy for asking so many questions that could easily have come from my lips and for the epiphanies that ensued from the returning words of wisdom.

I started getting into photography several months ago with a Fuji s5000 which I bought for backpacking around OZ and Thailand with. However, I wasnt terribly impressed with either my skills or my camera so have been lurking here for the past couple of months to try to improve myself.

Yesterday I got my 7th Canon 20d (the previous 6 were returned due to hot pixels appearing in every evening shot at ISO 1600 with exposures over 1 second {sometimes far less}) I've paired this off with a sigma 18-200 and that is the full extent of my kit.

What I like most about this site is the quality of constructive criticism as that is what I feel I need in order to improve myself - and if I'm wrong, I'm sure you'll tell me :D

So to start the ball rolling - here is a link to a web site I just created and 4 shots I took the other day in Glasgow.

Greetings from Wisconsin!

I've been a vacation photographer for a few years ago. I would do a bunch of shooting and then put the camera away until the holidays or the next vacation. Now I've got the bug.

At this point I'm primarily interested in landscapes, citiscapes and nature photography. I'm particularly fond of ruins.

I have a Canon Powershot A95 and a Nikon Coolpix from 7-8 years ago, plus a little Pentax IQZoomEZY which actually has a roll of film in it. If it weren't so stinking miserable outside today I'd go out and finish it off. Oh, and I just bought a little tiny mini-tripod.

I have some sense of composition, but my technical skills are largely non-existent. I may break down and buy photoshop; I've been playing around with the GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/).

Oh, and I'm still mad at myself for dropping a roll of film at Uxmal (http://www.smugmug.com/keyword/uxmal) a couple of years ago.

Hi, my name's Mark and I'm a photographer - oh sorry, wrong forum - thought it was photographers anonymous :D

Sorry - just my sense of humour.

I've been into photography for several (too many for me to want to count) years, ever since I was given my first Kodak Instamatic but a lot more serioulsy from when I got my first SLR. I was taught a lot by my father, who used to belong to a Leica 'postal portfolio' - basically a forerunner to this sort of forum, I suppose.

Photography slipped a bit with studies and family, but I'm getting back into it now. I'm working towards a DSLR, probably a Canon EOS350D but in the meantime, I'm using my film SLR and my digital compact, which was bought a few years ago, mainly to take pictures for my website about Newquay in Cornwall.

I look forward to looking through the forums. So far, it seems a bit gentler than the camera club I used to go to.

so lurkers - de-lurk yourselves, and start posting and contributing. it's easy to contribute in shots - tell the poster how you feel, you don't have to feel obligated to do a full critique (although there's a sticky in the challenge thread on how to critique) ... if all you can muster is "nice shot" well, that's okay too. but you can also tell the photographer how the shot makes you feel ...

in the other forums, contribute if you can answer a question - or if you notice something on page 2 or 3, and no replies, give it a courtesy bump so that others who may know the answer, will see it!

the mods will make nomination and we'll give away the prize in a month - and if this program works, we'll keep it up :thumb

I can relate to this one! Several others, but this one hit home.

I've cried - at the generosity and caring of this group helping someone with pictures of their Grandfather.

I've WOOOOOOOWed over Humongus' Travel Epic. I could not stop reading!

I've feel I've looked into the souls of some of the people in the Portraits section.

I hope to learn more and improve my photography and I can see this is a place where that can happen with a great group of people.

I don't feel qulified to critique the photos here, but I will try to participate and share my thoughts.

well, today I de-lurked by registering on dgrin, this is my 1st post, having been on smugmug since July 2005.

I am an amateur photographer enjoying a Nikon D70 for about the past year. Previously I used an Olympus C-3030 for my 1st 4 years of digital photography. Digital is really cool, which allows me to combine my love of photography and computers.

I have been a film photographer for the past 35 years, taking mostly only vacation photos. Now with digital, film is cheap and it is fun to experiment!

I live in Mesa, Arizona and have taken some local desert landscape photos. I love vacationing in Oregon and enjoy taking many ocean and coast landscape photos. Looking forward to learning on the forum. :thumb

Hi Andy,

I think it was you who referred me to this forum from the Adventure Rider forum back in January. I've had a browse round the forum a bit and there is some truly great stuff here. I wasn't too sure if my strictly amateur photography skills were worthy of being displayed here, but I figured I'm not going to improve much if I don't get feedback from those who have been where I am now.

Anyway, thanks for letting me know about this forum, I have made my first post over on the field and street board.

I found this site by accident! I just bought the Dan Margulis book on LAB Color and was searching for inspiration on how to understand and implement the later chapters:scratch . The threads I found here were very helpful, and I think I can learn a lot.
I live in the Highlands of Scotland and my primary interest is landscape work. The scenery up here is wonderful, and I want to do it justice.
Here is an example of my work which is also my first attempt at LAB editing!

welcome Highlander. Sounds like you've got some neat landscapes to photograph. I liked your shot and I'll be looking forwards to seeing more. FYI, you might want to post in "field and street" as well to get the folks interested in landscapes. For some reason this de-lurk yourself thread is in sports (maybe a mod could move it to a more appropriate place?)

Hello,
Bryan is the name, Calkidd is a nickname I picked up eons ago, been using it every since.

Well I just joined the other night and I am hoping to learn and gain valuable knowledge here. So far this is the best formated photography forum I have seen.

I recently purchased a Canon XT DSLR and don't know a dang thing about it much less photography :dunno(well, maybe a little...I know where the shutter button is:wink), but hey that is why I am here. I know one thing I made a mistake and purchased the wrong lens for what I want to do. So I am going to search around here a little and hopefully come up with the right one.

Right now looking to buy a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 for everyday shots and for my daughter's events which mostly take place indoors, mainly Cheer leading. I love motorcycle racing and want to get into photographing races. For that I am either looking at the Sigma 50-500 f/4-6.3 or the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. Just don't know yet, but I hoping to find the answers here. I am avoiding L glass since I can not afford them.

Well, I've been lurking around here for less than a month now. I really like the way everyone has a nice attitude here. I think I'll be able to get addicted to this forum real easily :wink.

But my name is Joel, I'm from southern NV. I'm currently going to college for my bachelors in Biological Sciences. I work part-time for Sears PS shooting family portraits. I love photography. I love shooting landscapes, people and anything for that matter thats able to catch my eyes. I enjoy reading what people have to say about one another's photos here and catching up on the news/gossip/reviews on new cameras and other equipment. I'm trying to contribute my thoughts on the whipping-post area as well all of the other areas on the forum. I like helping others improve because they usually return the favor later on.

Also, I just recently got into Infrared photography, here are some of my favorite shots, if you have any questions on IR, just PM me, I'm still new to it but I can help direct you to the right direction if you want to get into it:

Anyway, I think I'll enjoy it here. The contests are cool and challenging, a lot of people here are pretty creative. Those who still hasn't acquired the 'Eye' yet, I'm sure will learn from everyone else here. With that thought in mind, keep shooting! Know that I'll be observing and commenting! I look forward to what you all have to say and learn from everyone here :thumb

Hello,

I got into this site from the tutorial on Dan Margulis Lab photo. I worked with a pro photog on some of my images, and I was mightily impressed! He raved about Dan's LAB book. So I have both of Dan's book coming in the next week or so.

I'm into macro/microscope photography and will be entering some images in three competitions in the next three weeks.

I used to do a lot of photography, but kind of quit and moved into fine art oil-painting, drawing, etc. But, now with digital photography I've got control without all the film hassles, and I love it.:rofl

I do a lot of portrait and figure drawing, I taught life drawing when I was at the University of Michigan. A website with some of my art is:
http://www.cspot.org/portfolio/ click on Browse and then on my name, David G. Harris.

I have been a member of smugmug since Nov 2004. This is my first time to the forum.

I have recently bought a 350D which is an intimidating commitment to my photography for me.

I want to improve both my technique and my technical capabilites, but I am having difficulty. I know I must push on....

The picture below was taken with my old fujifinepix, not to long ago. I thought it was suitable for my first.....

Hello, everyone! My name is Elizabeth, and this is my first post on the forums. I'm a high school special education teacher, yearbook advisor, and photographer. I chose to use Smugmug for web fulfillment of my youth sports, portrait, and event photography image orders, as I felt the interface was much more user friendly for potential customers.
Recently widowed, I have two sons, ages 14 and 10. Keeping up with them and my other ventures is certainly challenging!
I've been happily addicted to photography for the past 20 years. After much trial and error with film, the switch to digital has been a godsend. I truly enjoy every minute I spend with my 20D and beloved prime lenses. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone on this forum. :):

Having no self-portrait handy, I'm introducing myself here. I haven't been lurking, but I have been on Smugmug for about 9 months now and I love it! I started getting "serious" about photography 6 years ago and just went digital last year. Most of my work has been with subjects other than people. I love cityscapes, landscapes, and wildlife. However, last year I began a concerted effort towards developing my "people skills" and I've found that I really enjoy it. You can check out my galleries here (http://dlamarhawkins.smugmug.com/).

Hello all,

I've been on smugmug since Jan.05, and somehow missed out on this forum so far. Glad to know that the people behind the screens are on this forum and wanted to give a thumbs up to them - smugmug's been fantastic so far :thumb (everytime I wished I had a particular feature, my wishes were answered within days - way to evolve guys!).

As for me - I am a Northern California resident. My smugmug mostly has travel memories: http://chandi.smugmug.com

I recently got a Sony R1, and am overwhelmed by the entire new world of photography opening up to me. At the moment, I LOVE playing with shallow depth of field, and I just can't get enough of it.

Enough words I guess, here's my intro pic and the EXIF: http://chandi.smugmug.com/photos/newexif.mg?ImageID=63495834 (http://chandi.smugmug.com/photos/newexif.mg?ImageID=63495834)

*EDIT* Sorry I didn't realize the thread is in sports section - I somehow was convinced this is "THE" thread to come out of lurk mode and posted what I thought was one of my better shots. And no, I don't have any sports shots (unless you consider the above snail as racing with other nearby snails :) ) Sorry again - next time I'll be more careful before vandalizing threads...

I shoot mostly motorsports and here are a couple of examples.

Ahhhh...I've been De-Lurkified!

My name is Mike and I bought a F717 6 months ago. I just wanted a cam that could take indoor shots of my kids growing up but I found when I looked through the EVF, there's a whole world out there with a fascinating perspective.

I love to take shots of people and Infrared. I really like to see how a single shot can evoke emotion or tell a story. I've taken a couple thousand pics so far and found only a couple that really grab me. I'm still learning how to view the world in rectangles...

I'm an Electrical Engineer and really love the techie stuff but have a creative side that I express through photography, music, woodworking and cooking (yep, cooking - ever seen Food Network? Lots-o-creativity there!)

I really like how you all bend toward the creative side - I really appreciate those who push my thinking and perspective.

I've tried to attach a shot from this past weekend - I wanted to compose the shot to draw your eye to my son and get an idea that he is longing to find the hidden "treasure" scattered around the yard. I didn't want a face shot because his expression would distract from the simplicity of his mission.

Hi my name is Ryan I've been a member with smugmug since December.

I have not done alot of posting here in the forums and never posted any over my images, mainly just asking questions or just commenting on great photos I've seen here.

I love to take shots/pictures of NYC or anything in the city that I see, that catches my interest.

I am a graphic designer, thats loves photography and sometimes I get to use my photos in my work, some of my photos have been published in several books I designed. I also like to show my photos to people and I have done a couple of art shows which I enjoyed.

I want to say thank you to everyone here who has helped me out with this whole website and design thing. So far my experience here has been nice and great, hope to stay with smugmug for a while.

Hi All!:clap

We've been on smugmug for 1 year and 2 days under the name of Southwest Images by delibby. Effective May 1st (today) we changed our name to Iron Creek Photography. We thought the change of name was important since both my wife and myself contribute images to our web site. We've been taking images for over 30 years but just changed to "professional" since retiring from the federal government (both of us!). We now spend our time traveling the US in search of that perfect landscape or wildlife image. The more we do this the better we get.
Our gear is completely made up of Canon products (bodies and lens) We also offer “in-house” printing which is done with our Epson 4000.

Please come visit us and leave a note if you find something you like.

I'm such a noob, that I only got my account going yesterday. I've known of SmugMug for a while, but never really looked into the place much--up until this last week my self-hosted site was sufficient. An out-of-the-blue break fell into my lap and I found myself needing some way of getting prints into customers' hands easily--SmugMug fits the bill! I'm still getting my feet under me just transferring images from my older site to here, so not much to show yet, and being a picky longtime PC user, I know I'll eventually customize the snot out of my space here; so expect a bunch of noob (but well-thought-out) questions from me in the near future.

BTW, the old site is at http://64.81.80.185/photography/portfolio/

This is only my second post here (my first was about 10 minutes ago in the "Show us your mug..." thread!).

I shoot almost exclusively underwater (see www.seattleyates.smugmug.com) (http://www.seattleyates.smugmug.com%29), and I am active on several underwater photography boards (www.wetpixel.com (http://www.wetpixel.com) and www.digitaldiver.net) (http://www.digitaldiver.net%29), but I am really hoping to develop my above-water skills this coming year.

Strange as it may seem, I am somewhat intimidated by above-water photography. Allow me to explain. I've spent years learning and refining my underwater photo skills (first with SLRs, then video, then point-&-shoot digital, now with DSLRs). I still have MUCH to learn, but I'm very comfortable in that environment (I shoot in full manual mode, including manually setting/adjusting my strobes -- haven't used TTL in years).

When you're underwater, you usually see "some thing" specific to shoot (a fish or school of fish, a shark, a pretty coral, etc.). It is just a matter of applying principles of composition, lighting and exposure to get a pleasing picture of that subject (if you're lucky!).

Above water, OTOH, the number and variety of potential subjects is endless! I look at the photos on this and other photography websites, and I am in awe of people's creativity and eye for "seeing" great photographs in the "ordinary" world around them (a flower blossom, a curving staircase, etc.). Since I do not consider myself terribly creative, I look around and--although I KNOW there's cool stuff I could be shooting--I just don't feel like I "see" it! I have a brother who's an artist, and I consider many of you to be artists as well, but I'm just not sure I have a natural eye for the millions of potential subjects I pass by each day... <sigh>

Despite all that, however, I am determined to expand my photo "universe" to the above-water world in the coming year, and I look forward to learning more from all of you in the process!

Hey Bruce, nice to see you here. What you're saying rings a bell with me -- notice my "Artistically Challenged" moniker. 99% of my shots are nature shots. I think that's ok. It's all in how you look at the world I guess and what you find interesting.

Thanks, Joel! Nice to see a familiar moniker! I guess the one thing I have in common with lots of the folks here is a hobby-bordering-on-obsession relationship with photography. My emphasis just happens to be underwater. BTW, I checked out your website, and I really like some of your stuff, too - the eagles are great, and the "humping squirrels" caught my eye as well. :thumb

I haven't been here in a few weeks so as punishment for forgetting about this wonderful place I will introduce myself. I am currently a government employee working at a military installation doing work I would prefer not to do. No, nothing of a scientific or experimental nature, just wish I was out earning a living as a photographer. (Though that may not pay so well.)

I am really don't have a specific genre that I want to do, though I am definately not interested in weddings, I have done a little landscape and wild life photography and though I think the images suck, friends and family keep oohing and aweing. I know their being nice, but it does sound funny. :):

I've just started, got the camera last December, and hope that my talent and abilities soon improve. I've given up on remebering anything so, you may have nudge me from time to time. LOL :D

Since I just finished posting to the tech forum about the broken hit counters, I figure I may as well officially de-lurk also.

My name is Tim Tyson, and I've actually been with Smugmug for about a year and half now (though it sure seems longer). I've been upgrading cameras for the last several years, from a bare bones digital to my current beloved Canon digital Rebel. I feel like my ability and knowledge has grown by leaps and bounds, although I still have a long way to go, which makes this such a fascinating and fun hobby.

Most of my pictures come from my participation in an organization called the Society for Creative Anachronism (http://www.sca.org) (SCA).

We are, for lack of a better term, "medieval recreationists", although that is somewhat misleading, since we are more about living the "Current Middle Ages" than trying to re-create any actual historical setting.

Here's a sample pic from a recent event near Richmond, Virginia so you can get a little better idea of what we do:

http://ursus.smugmug.com/photos/73224127-M.jpg

Yeah, they are trying to hit each other with sticks (actually taped pieces of rattan). There is much, much more to the SCA than just fighting, however. It just happens to be the part I enjoy the most, especially as a photographer. :D

If you're interested in learning more, please visit the link to the SCA (we have groups all across North America, as well as Europe and Australia), and feel free to visit my site for many similar pics.

It's great to be a member of the Smugmug family (except when the hit counters are broken - sigh!), and I may start visiting these boards occasionally to show you more crazy photos.

Since I just finished posting to the tech forum about the broken hit counters, I figure I may as well officially de-lurk also.

I had a friend when I was in the Republic of Panama that was into the SCA. Your images are pretty good. Now I'll have to look for a local group to photograph. :):

Newbie here -- not a qualified lurker yet since this is my first time -- I guess I'm really a lurk virgin -- Just dropped by to see why the counters were off (I like to know how many adoring fans I have, unfortunately not as many adoring fans as some tennis pros). In any event -- I'm officially unlurking on the day I began lurking, I guess it didn't take much did it.

Well, this comment pushed me into delurker status. I an not a virgin lurker, but haven't spent very much time on these boards, so here goes!

I just figured out how to customize my gallery and link it to my website, which is primarily a blog just now. You can find my photos at photos.writingtravel.com (http://photos.writingtravel.com)

Help! I am looking for opinions on the Nikon D200. My D70 has never skipped a beat except for 3fps which is really SLOW in sports applications. So my questions to anyone that will answer that has one, how do they like it so far? any problems? better than anticipated, etc? Thank you for letting me de-lurk.

Well, I'm back... after over a year. Forgot my old login ID, but last time here I was asking for advice about the 20d... and got some great advice. Well, I have ordered myself a new 20d to replace my trusty Sony F717 (still love that thing... will keep it for camping and other situations where I don't want to risk my new cam)

So hopefully soon I will be able to post something of worth around here!

From the movie Barfly:

Wanda: I hate people. Do you hate people?
Henry: I don't hate people. I just like it a lot better when they're not around.

Wanda: I hate the police, don't you?
Henry: I don't know, but I seem to feel better when they're not around.

Hi everyone... I've really got to hand it to the people who maintain this forum, I've never before seen real help given so freely.

I've been signed up with dgrin for just over a week now, mostly just reading up on the customization ... again can I just say "wow" to the house pros. :clap

So far things have been going OK, I am *not* HTML, Java, CSS savy, more of a copy, paste & modify kind of girl. So I've been getting a little braver and trying more each day. I finally got to the point where I am going to have to ask for help (in a more appropriate thread) getting the slide show set up on my homepage. :confused

Anyway... I look forward to learning and helping out in anyway than I can.

OK, here's my first post and I'll admit I've been lurking for about a month before signing on recently.

I've been a "point and shoot" guy all my life. You know the type, the guy who always has the camera, but never really learned how to take a good photograph. Well that has begun to change... I've invested in a Nikon D70 and have begun taking my picture taking a little more seriously. Signing onto this forum is but one step I am taking in this direction.

I have also begun building a smugmug site. I'm still on the trail offer period, but will consumate the partnership very soon. If you would like to take a quick look, here is the address:

http://wmrogers.smugmug.com/

Some of the pictures on the site are simply old snapshots i've scanned and stored for posterity, some I have taken with old point and shoot cameras, and a few are my first attempts to take good pictures. I have a lot to learn, so be gentle - but constructive critism is always welcomed!

I take photographs to document a lot of things in my work and hobbies, so the volume of pictures to be stored will be significant. I do not plan to "sell" my pictures, but because I shoot at a lot of construction industry and off-roading "events" where people may like a copy of what I have taken, this may change. I am considering the "Power Users" account due to the volume, and upgrading to "Professional" if and when i decided to market anything I do for sale.

This is my official de-lurk post.

I want to start out by saying thanks to Digital Grin users’ feedback on the Sony A100 DSLR. I believe your comments have helped me make a decision for the better. The new Canon Rebel XTi looks like an awesome camera. Now I just need to sell my well-loved Sony DSC-F717, my pride and joy for the past three years.

Utah DGrinners: I’d like to take some photography classes here in Northern Utah (Salt Lake City to Ogden area) and don’t know where to start looking. Even though I’ve been shooting digital photos for seven years, I’d like to start out with the basic concepts. Anyone have a suggestion? What about online courses?

Hi, Folks - from the cool NW
I was attracted here by IR photos using "my favorite", a Sony Mavica CD500.
I've had the inclination to shoot only a few pics with my R72 filter, and IR looks do-able.
My background is in bee research, both lab and field, and spent most of my life in Arizona. Sure is cooler up here!
I've been a photographer, amateur and job-related, for eons, and have a closetfull of old cameras that take extinct film sizes.

Hello everyone,

I generally don't post to forums, I signed up here because of a reference to dgrin in my smugmug messges about a system upgrade. I surfed over and sure enough I found the answer to a question I've had for months about RSS feeds of my smugmug galleries. I was impressed with how knowledgable and courteous this community is and have decided to become a part of it.

I discovered digital SLR photography about 2 or 3 years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. I am always open to advice and feedback on how to improve my pictures. As such I would like to share my galleries, http://jeffnesh.smugmug.com. Any insights you guys have on some of the wildlife and landscape photos in my "Alaskan Honeymoon" gallery would be greatly appreciated.

All the best, I look forward to participating in future discussions. Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

I have been a member of DGrin for a couple of months and am enjoying the many benefits of the website. I am a career firefighter/paramedic and plan to retire with over thirty years of service in two years. I plan to supplement my retirement income through sports action photography. I current shoot sports action at two local high schools and some youth sports clubs. I have been interested in photography for about 33 years and have become most interested in shooting sports action over the past five years. I have plenty to learn and I look forward to learning alot right here at DGrin. If any Chicago-area members or other members traveling to the Chicago area would be interested in a shoot or just a cup of coffee and chat...please let me know. I have shot a couple of times with Nick (Gluwater) and have enjoyed his company very much. Thanks in advance for welcoming me among you and for teaching me how to shoot better. I hope that I can offer some assistance to you in the future as well.

Hi all. I'm just starting my fledgling photo gallery and am jumping in with both feet. I hope to be able to rely on the considerable knowledge base here for both artistic advice and business advice.

I've been taking pictures since I was old enough to hold a camera. I've always hesitated becoming a "professional" because I thought it would kill my love of photography, but with the internet I think I can keep a happy balance.

Hi all:
I have been lurkiing around these pages for quite some time. That sounds so awful. My gallery has been up and running for a while, but I must admit that posting pictures here seems a little bit intimidating. There are so many wonderful photographers with amazing pictures. As a lurker I have learned a lot about digital imaging, but it is time to come out of the lurker closet.
Once I learn how to post pictures properly I will give it a go......maybe even in the whipping post.
This thread is a really great idea!

This is my first post to the forum too. I love my camera (Nikon D50) but don't know how to use it properly to get the most from it. Next month I'm booked into a basic course so hopefully will be on my way to taking some great photos.

I could just sit and look for ages at some of the photos I've seen posted to this forum and hope to one day be posting ones that I've taken. I have already picked up valuable tips and advice while lurking.

I just discovered this forum and am very excited to poke around. I have been with Smugmug for just over a year and LOVE it.

I'm a freelance photographer and my day-job is mom to 3 kids as well as Education Director for a professional theatre. They just hired me to do all of their show shots and while I'm stoked by their vote of confidence, I need to work on my theatre-lighting skills big time.

My dad is a professional photographer and my main source of inspiration. I think I finally talked him into a smugmug account :barb

Hi,

I'm new to DG, though I've been on the DPReview and Fred Miranda forums for a while. I discovered DG when someone on FM recently posted a link to a post by Rutt on Don Margulis LAB color book. It's a great thread and I was really impressed with the site.

I've been "doing" photography for about 30 years, starting with an old Canon AE-1 and switching to digital about four years ago. I've been upgrading my digital equipment almost annually, but think I've reached the pinacle with the 5D, which I purchased a few months ago (of course, there's always new lenses).

Anyway, looking forward to learning some new techniques here and to posting some pictures for comments and critque.

Hey Kelvins,

Besides shrinking the avatar, what about writing with a text color other than blue :thumb, I was having a real hard time trying to read it until I remember to select (and invert colors) it.

Photoshop (or similar) should do a good job resizing your avatar...

so lurkers - de-lurk yourselves, and start posting and contributing. it's easy to contribute in shots - tell the poster how you feel, you don't have to feel obligated to do a full critique (although there's a sticky in the challenge thread on how to critique) ... if all you can muster is "nice shot" well, that's okay too. but you can also tell the photographer how the shot makes you feel ...

in the other forums, contribute if you can answer a question - or if you notice something on page 2 or 3, and no replies, give it a courtesy bump so that others who may know the answer, will see it!

the mods will make nomination and we'll give away the prize in a month - and if this program works, we'll keep it up :thumb[/quote]

Hello SmugMug Community!

I'm building my site here and braving the customization options even though I've always deferred that sort of thing to my highly skilled Web Developer friends.

Why? Cause I was gonna go with LiveBooks.com, but decided to try out SmugMug and see if I can take advantage of their value pricing and customization options! Only time will tell. I decided that if I am unable to make SmugMug meet my professional needs, then I can always use it for my friends and family photo sharing needs.

So far, I find the entire SmugMug team very friendly and helpful. I'm going to need their expertise in order to tweak my site just right, but I'm braced for the work!

Thanks for hosting such a very cool website and I look forward to learning only what I need to about coding so I can focus on my imagery instead.

Hey everyone...I am semi-"de-lurking". I joined about 3 months ago but have been really busy over the summer, so I haven't been able to participate as much as I would have liked. I figured I would officially delurk and introduce myself.

I am a free-lance motorsports photographer from the Midwest (Ohio). www.watsonfx.com (http://www.watsonfx.com) I spend the spring and summer shooting everything from Superbikes to sprint cars to F1. During the winters, I seem to focus my "sports" photography toward my kid's hockey team. I am also an avid nature/wildlife photographer. I try to get down to the Everglades each spring to shoot.

Recently I finished up my motorsports season with the AMA Superbike Championships. I posted some of the images and got great feedback. Here is the link if you want to check it out.

http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=44034

With that, I'll share one of my favorite shots from this past season...Thanks!

Trying to figure out my way around this site. Got a Canon Digital Rebel about two years ago and have been snapping away like crazy since then. Just have a cheap Quantaray 100-300mm zoom, but I'm trying to get as much out of it as possible.

Attached (hopefully) is about my favorite shot. Not sure how it will display in this thread--as it's been reduced a good bit.

Appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Howdy Everyone. Just joined up here. I'm an avid ADVrider (http://www.advrider.com) which is how I discovered Smugmug and Dgrin. Lots of good stuff here. I used to shoot alot of medium and large format film stuff, but shoot mostly digital now. Really haven't made any good images yet digitally, but I'm learning more about processing software (to add to my CS/2) and lens availability for my Rebel XT.

Anyway, just hought I'd say hi! :wave Guess I'll post a pic too since this is a photog site!

A film exhibition:

& some published, though not very good, digital work:

Hullo winterhk :wave

Welcome to Dgrin. We don't have a Jo Mama, but the forums can be pretty entertaining nonetheless :lol3

Please feel free to post additional shots in the appropriate forum(s). This thread doesn't get much traffic and your photos deserve more attention than they will garner in this thread :thumb

Just found this site an hour or so ago....and it feels quite comfortable. :rofl I'm at work and don't have many photos with me, but let me see what I can dig up.

I'm not sure how things work around here yet, but if the image I just uploaded appears it was taken on Mayne Island, B.C. at Bennett Bay. The rock detail and the position of the logs kind of reminded me of a heavily camouflaged military vehicle or something....

I took you seriously over on ADVRider and figured I'd drop by.

Here's my submission. Too bad I didn't get the sun over the hand on the statue instead of under it, but I couldn't see!

Hi All. This is just a larger version of my avatar. This is the first shot that I really like since taking up photography a short time ago. This little guy was partying at our house in Key West. Any comments and critiques are greatly appreciated

Happy new year all!

I received a Canon 30D for Christmas and happened upon this site while looking for ways to get started. Nice site; I think it will be a great tool for my new hobby in this new year.

Thanks to all the contributors here, I hope to de-mystify as I de-lurk! :thumb

Probably too late for this, but since I'm new here, I'll have a go at it.

Here's one I think I'll call "Nice Try."

Hello! I just registered for Digital Grin in the past hour. I just opened my smugmug account over the holidays.

I'm just an amateur photographer. Over the years I've gradually improved my cameras from point and shoot, to 35 mm prosumer, then a Canon G1, and now a Canon E350 XT. I've started to order lenses for the camera, but so far cannot afford the ultimate "L" lens.

I was a long time caver so lots of my older photos are shot in caves. With no light but a flash these photos are difficult to make but worth the effort. Unfortanately, all of those photos are on 35mm slides and film so I'm having to scan them in, touch them up with Paintshop Pro, then upload them to smugmug. That takes time.

Nowadays I mostly run. I ran a marathon last month. I'm running a 50K trail run in mountains the last weekend this month. I work at NASA. I have a wife and 3 kids.
