Always like the colours of the eyes of these Tephritid picture wing flies.

Thanks for looking and commenting everybody :)

Schmoo - most of the picture wing flies I've come across have nice coloured eyes but not always with the stripes as well.

Fantastic shots. May I ask how you identify the insects in your photos? Must be a couple of pretty good field guides... sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks for the comments everybody :)- these flies are quite interesting especially when they are doing wing displays.

Tom - I have a couple of Insect guides for the UK and Western Europe which will normally allow you to ID the family. After that I often use web sites like Wild about Britain or Diptera.info if I want to know more. After 3 years macro shooting in my garden I can generally have a good idea of what the bugs are I see :).
IDing many bugs down to species level can be very difficult without microscopic examination which I'm not interested in.

Brian, thanks for the info. I see that many folks on the forum identify their subjects with proper scientific names instead of common names, which is great. But insect taxonomy can be a killer.
