Uhm, in that case: why such short shutter times? :scratch
With 2-3 sec exposures and aperture set about f/8..f/11 you'll get
1) Way more FX due to the increased capture time.
2) Sharper images... Both due to increased DOF and no need to go all MLU. 1/10th sec.. 1sec are the most prone to the infamous mirror shock effect. :dunno :deal

But my internet is being goofy (I think it's taking the day off for the 4th or something like that...) and I'm having trouble linking photos from my gallery...
Anyways, for now, I'll just link to the gallery itself... I took them last night...
I totally need more work... and I'll be out shooting again tonight... hopefully with "gooder" results..

Miguel, link to the gallery is nice, but it's not how we do things here at Dgrin. You were able to post in the past, so I think you know how to do it.
No need to publish all. Just a few with exif info next to it will do just fine.

I had the camera on my Manfrotto tripod/ballhead combo, used manual mode, and had the shutter in bulb, but since I don't have a cable release I had to be very very steady holding that button down :D It was my first time shooting fireworks and the location kinda sucked, but I was just there to have a good time and try to get a couple of photos.

Sorry man, I didn't mean to sound like that, I was in Pennsylvania all day for the 4th and the only thing I had for internet communication was my iPhone, and with lack of copy and paste, it was a chore in itself to link everything let alone keep going back to write the EXIF in, I edited my post with the EXIF :thumb

All pictures are taken with Canon 40D + EF 100-400 at 400mm over a distance of about 2 miles, NGEDT2 CF tripod, ADIDT cable release (which stopped working in the middle of a shoot :cry )
All: ISO 100, f/8, bulb mode.
Since the fireworks are "self-registering" events (like ligthing or any other light source), the exact length of exposure really doesn't mean much, it's only a matter of how many blasts you want to capture in one frame.
Images are cropped in ACR, some are tweaked for exposure, and then converted to jpeg via PS ImageProcessor.

Hey, I'm not particularly fond of this one because its so blown out, but I think it shows the chaos of the "finale" considering this was a two second exposure. I wasn't sure about making another post so Nik if you want me to combine this one into my previous I could definitely do that.

Yeah, finales are treacherous that way. That's why you shoot RAW and have ACR to deal with.
E.g. this 3sec (ISO 100, f/8) one:
http://nik.smugmug.com/photos/325669757_bLjRX-XL.jpg
was originally very much like yours. But ACR's Recovery and Exposure sliders did their magic:-)

And you got some reflections, too:-)
Was there any considerably higher ground?
Just for the record: MLU *really* doesn't do anything useful in this particular (over 2 sec) scenario, especially at that focal length. Only brings more hassle since you have to press the shutter extra time and in bulb settings it's easy to forget in which phase you are:-)

This was our first chance to shoot fireworks with the new camera. I think some of them came out pretty darn good...
The show was actually in the next town over (Biloxi, we were in Ocean Springs, MS) but we had a very clear unobstructed view of these. (unfortunatly no reflctions over the water, there was a barrier island in the way)
Lemme know what you think.

Oops, I totally forgot to put my images in here this weekend. Anywho - here they are. Check my smugmug gallery (http://darkdragon.smugmug.com/gallery/5330470_93rqX) if you are interested to see even more. There was absolutely nothing interesting to capture with the fireworks (no water, no people because of the angle we had to view), so I went with filling the frame fully with the fireworks themselves (as much as possible).
All shot with:
Canon 40D + 17-40mm f/4L
ISO 100
40mm
f22 on Bulb modePost Processing: converted from RAW via Lightroom, cropped

Thank you! :thumb
I'd say f/22 was an overkill, no? :scratch I understand you were close, but it looks like f/16 (or maybe even f/12) would do just fine and would allow you to use slightly shorter exposures.

Possibly, probably. I dunno, this was my first time taking fireworks shots. :dunno
I was worried about them being out of focus and was unsure of the distance so I thought an f/22 would work because I know they were a lot farther away then the farthest point I could focus on before the show started. I'll try a wider opening next time and see how that works out :D

Here's a trick for you: if you didn't have a chance to prefocus during the day time, switch to AF and focus on the one of the first blasts. Then simply switch to MF.

Good idea....now why didn't i think of that at the time? :scratch Maybe the 110 degree heat was getting to me.

Woohoo... Another Vegas photographer... :clap
wow! I love all the shots everyone did. I am in Alaska and they really do not have displays around here on the fourth of July....its too light out. There are many places here that ban fireworks all together because of the fire risks to the forestry.
Now when the first of the year comes around....there are plenty of shows the city puts on...but you have to keep your camera warm inbetween shots because its usually below zero and you have to keep your coat open to put the camera against your body and thick gloves off so you can change your settings if need be. Then there is the whole thing with the tripod...you have to be able to snap the camera on and off quickly before the shutter freezes.
I got some shots at the beginning of this year off...but they do not qualify here. But I have enjoyed looking at this thread emensly. Great work everyone!

Next time I think I am going to use a smaller aperture. One nice thing about living near Disney World is that I don't have to wait for till next year. :wink

Here are a few of my attempts.
Tamron 28-75
Bulb setting with remote trigger
Manfrotto with ballhead
Basic photoshop, nothing fancy
The smoke was terrible. Next year I will be sure to be on the upwind side.
Is there anything I can do for these pics to minimize the smoke?

Later than everyone else, but the big fireworks show in our area comes in the middle of August each year.

I guess I should have been checking in on the forums this month - but I'm on vacation, anyway.
So far this year, I've only managed to go to one fireworks event. I had hoped to go to a bigger one, but it was put off that night because of heavy rain.
Maybe too late for the assignment value, but I hope you enjoy. All taken on 9 August 2008, Haga, Japan
I used Pentax K10D set at Bulb with the cable release. Lens was Pentax SMC P-DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED/AL (IF).
