View Full Version : Emptying Shopping Cart Abandons Site

If a customer adds picture to their cart they have an option to “Continue Browsing” but if they empty their cart it appears that there is no way back to the referring site. It seems somewhat unfriendly and inconvenient for the shopper. Inconvenience = lost sales
Perhaps this has been addressed already; if not any chance we can get them back to the referring site?

We were talking about this just today, actually.
The short answer is that we'd like to offer something, but it's very difficult since carts often contain photos from many galleries. How do you choose which one to go back to?
Anyway, we're aware of the problem and actively thinking about it. No promises, though. :)

don, et. al.:
it's not hard to see how hard your guys' jobs are! just in the past few weeks there have been things that come up, that, on the face of them, sound simple but once explained, are rather complicated issues! i can see why smugmug is so good, and why it's so hard to replicate.
congrats to you guys for doing such a great job.

... How do you choose which one to go back to?...I'm going to suggest the last gallery you visited before you came to the cart.
See you later, gs

Back to the photographer's home page would be great, but not sure if possible.

but, the rub is, as don said, there are often prints in the cart from more than one photographer ....

That's right... I uderstand that. Then just a link to the last visited gallery.

That's right... I uderstand that. Then just a link to the last visited gallery.I’m in agreement with Erik , as any web developer knows if a visitor is forced to close a window or has to leave a site they are more than likely no going to return. By stranding the customer in the shopping cart with no exit no return causes them to do exactly this which will equate to lost sales for ALL the photogs and Smugmug as well.
I realize this is not an easy fix but from my myopic view point it is definitely an important one.
Thanks in advance,

I have a proposal:
1) Every shopping cart session keeps track of every SM account from which a user has added a product.
2) Towards the top, there is a list of links directly to that photographer's site.
3) Every pro photographer has the option of uploading a small logo (restricted in size and in bytes). This is shown instead of text if it exists.
4) If only one photographer exists, the site takes on the cobranding appearance of that photographer. I don't think giving full access to CSS is wise, but perhaps background color, text color, link color. The SM logo should remain prominant so that the user knows who they are paying, etc....
5) If multiple photographers exist, the standard smugmug apearance is shown with a section at the top labeled: Photographer Links, and the text or logo links below.
Hopefully this would solve more problems than it creates.
Thoughts?

Yes... just like with share groups... a list of sites visited for a day or two.

This issue is still outstanding.
Can we get an update on where the resolution is in the pipeline?
