No I haven't been to Tibet. I paid a visit yesterday to Samye-Ling Tibetan Centre at Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, which is about 11 miles from where I live.

Hi Maxine,
Apparently it is a sign of letting peace prevail on earth. If you walk around the tree clockwise you will have peace on earth. The ties are just strips of cotton.
