Here's your photo assignment for this week: Blue.

Photos must be fresh - taken this week, not stuff you've got hanging around on your computer.
Blue means the primary focal point of your image should be the color blue.
Have at it.

Advanced spin: Maximum zoom (over 100mm). Post EXIF data if you are submitting for this category. Photoshoppery is acceptable in this assignment (I.e. you may change the color of an object).

I found some blue on the way home from work today. If you ever wanted to know what happens to used up reactor compartments from nuclear submarines, sit down, cause your gonna see.

This is one of the Port of Benton areas located throughout Richland. Lampson Inc. is one of our local employers that is known world wide. They build and use some of the largest cranes in the world.

When the Navy scraps a submarine, they have to do something with the reactor. They cut out the entire reactor compartment, de-contaminate it, and haul it on a barge up the Columbie to the Hanford Reservation. This little gem lifts the entire reactor compartment off the barge.

http://hutch.smugmug.com/photos/3276590-L.jpg

Once it has the reactor off the barge, it places it on this trailer...

http://hutch.smugmug.com/photos/3276596-L.jpg

I believe they use this small fellow to pull the trailer up the hill...

http://hutch.smugmug.com/photos/3276592-L.jpg

Once up the hill, they hook the trailer to these 2 tractors and pull it about 25 miles north of town for burial.

http://hutch.smugmug.com/photos/3276588-L.jpg

It is hard to describe how big one of those sections of submarines is until you see one coming down the road towards you.

One of the changes seen since 9-11; They now have a Coast Guard gunboat following the barge up the river. I suspect they probably have live ammo!

How about that for some big blue!

Very interesting... Until recently we lived just outside Gate 4 -Little Creek Amphibious Base, Virginia Beach, VA.... Little Creek is deemed one of the largest base of it's kind... And just a few short miles away is Naval Air Station, Oceana. Funny how after a time, you come to take all of the military vessels for granted... They are just "always" there, a part of day to day life, for us. And yet, seeing your photos put another twist on the magnitude of size. Would have been really cool to have had a human subject in the photo to gauge scale...
Nicely done.

Ddog - Great link. Sometimes I think we really don't want to know what's out there!

Altpro - It would have been great to have a human for reference, but alas, I was by myself. The tires on the tractors are at least 6 ft tall if that gives you some idea!

I like a lot of the photos but how many meet the criteria:
Blue means the primary focal point of your image should be the color blue

I am re-submitting:

Something tells me that if this was the original submission, most would never have thought about used reactors. Maybe it doesn't really matter, but I think the story means something.

A lot of people are very artsey and creative. Me, not very creative or good, but I enjoy taking photos and enjoy sharing some of the story of where I live with other people.

My $0.02 worth!

BTW, It's a good thing this isn't Jo momma!

I love these architectural shots; I think they are my favorite of all shots posted so far (but I'm a junkie for a good building pic, don't ask me why...) My favorite is the one with the screen mesh in front.

Since I am not using a digi cam ... having it proccessed in a sort of wallmart store,... and squeezing like 38-39 picts on a 36 pict film(through good loading), I had to find out that those bastards only develloped 36 instead all 38...

Here's my challange .... I scanned the neg. asking you folks to convert it to a reg. pict... I played around with my prog. but wasn't able to. :dgrin

Thanx

BTW it has blue init....

Lockheed uses the Antonov to ferry satellites between their Sunnyvale
location and the Russian launch facility. When the airplane comes in, it
blots out the sky--it's huge (and very loud).

Nice shot!
