View Full Version : Upload video disappearing

I'm putting this on a separate thread because I don't think it is relevant to the video thread - it appears to be an upload issue.
Situation:
1. Last week I uploaded three videos while testing configs for video.
2. This morning, I tried to delete one of the videos but two disappeared.
3. All day, I have tried to re-upload the two missing videos. Each time I upload the video, using the Simple method, the upload completes and then the gallery shows the Processing Image icon, as usual. Soon thereafter, the video disappears completely from the gallery.
5. Repeated attempts to upload the videos, using the same or different filenames, have the same result. The file appears to upload, but the finished file never appears.
Gallery is here (http://photos.kimmerer.com/gallery/5071557_Pvsfo#305281905_5mdmu).
Can a Support Hero look under the hood and correct the error of my ways?
Thanks!

Populus,
I took a look at the upload log and it shows, the tried and failed 10 times error. That indicates that something is probably wrong with the format of the video. Codec, audio format, or encoding. Can you tell me if you did anything different from the video that did upload?
You may want to try running the videos through a converter like MPEG Streamclip and try again.
You can get that at www.squared5.com

Doc -
These are the same videos I uploaded last week, but I will check my Super settings and try again. I didn't want to go to Streamclip if Super is working.
I'll do some research and try again.
Thanks!

So these files are the exact same files? You did not reexport or change them in any way? :scratch

Same files. So last night, I made new versions from ProShow to Super, using exactly the same protocol as before, saving as an MP4. I tested the MP4 in several programs including Streamclip, Quicktime, Super and Miro. It played properly as an MP4 in all of them. I then uploaded the file (puppets.mp4) using the Smugmug Simple uploader. The file appeared to upload in about 30 minutes (50.5 MB file), then the processing icon appeared for about an hour, then the file disappeared.
So, I have reuploaded the original videos with no success and uploaded videos that I am certain are H.264 MP4 videos, again with no success.
I am able to upload an ordidnary jpg using the Simple uploader (not my normal workflow - I usually use Send to Smugmug). Right now, my Films gallery contains one video that I uploaded last week and one jpg from this morning as an experiment. The other videos consistently disappear.
Any ideas, Doc? Thanks for your help.

I'm suffering from the same problem. I've been successful at saving 5 video files, but no matter how many times I upload others, they either a) don't show up at all (most cases), or b) show up as a 1-pixel thumbnail which doesn't play.
All my videos were created with the same settings, as I used Compressor (Final Cut Studio 6) to run a batch conversion on all of them at once (about 10 in total). The settings are identical (aside from data size and length, of course):
Format:
H.264, 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Millions
AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
Frames/Second:
29.92
Data Size:
442.61 MB
Data Rate:
6175.30 kbits/s
Normal Size:
720 x 480 pixels
I am a pro user, and all videos are under 10 mins, and under 512Mb.
Any ideas?

Bump
Doc - any update? I don't want to upload any more videos until this is resolved - waste of time.

Jas,
I may be wrong but this data rate seems a bit high. Can you try lowering that and try again?

populus,
Please upload your file here: http://dropbox.yousendit.com/SmugMug
I need to see the original file information to see what may be going on.
Be sure to include your email address and a link back to this so I know it is from you.

I think I figured out why it was not uploading. The audio frequency is 32khz. This does not appear to be supported. I ran the video through MPEG StreamClip to change only the audio rate. That is the movie you see uploaded.
Super should have a way to change this. You might want to see if that is the input from the camera as well. It may be passed through.

Hey Doc... I don't mind trying, but a little more specificity (target data rate?) would help. It's probably also relevant to point out that the videos which have successfully appeared in my galleries have very similar data rates to those which were not. Below, I've ranked the videos according to data rates (in kbits/sec) -- with the successful examples -bolded-.
Attempted Uploads
6083
5736
-5853-
-5852-
5557
-5399-
-5353-
5033
5032
Based on the above information, it appears as though the data rate may not be the issue. Furthermore, the error messages in my upload log indicates that my movies are too long ("upload problem: video longer than 600 seconds"). None of my videos exceeds 10 minutes. One (unsuccessful) video is 9:59, a few are around 9:20, and one is only 5:20. I'm at a loss as to why these videos -- especially the 5:20 one -- would result in those error messages. Again -- I am a pro user, and have been careful to stay within the stated parameters.
I'd appreciate it if you could look into this for me. I've now spent a couple days of trial and experimentation with nothing to show for it but frustration. :scratch
Thanks Doc,

Thanks, Doc. I must have inadvertently reset the audio rate in Super. I'll try mine again.

J1,
I was going off of the information you provided. That may not have been enough detail for me to really work with. Sorry about that. Can you send your video along as well as Populus did? I will take a look to see what might be up with your video as well. The description you give now makes me thing that the audio track or some of the video track may extend past the 10 minute mark even though it was edited out. I have seen that before.

Thanks, Doc, that was the problem. I created a new vid, uploaded it and it is perfect. Thanks!

Thanks Doc. I tried uploading my videos with a much lower data rate (~1200 kbits/sec vs. 5000 from before), and all my videos went through.
The only remaining issue is that they don't play on my iPhone via the SmugMug site (the same videos files -- downloaded directly from SmugMug's conversions -- play fine via the iPod feature on my iPhone). It's really perplexing, as a few of them started to work at one point -- for no reason. ???

J,
Can you send me a link to a public video on your site? I was not able to locate anything public. The unlisted passworded videos will probably not play.
I can play public videos on my iphone.

That's just the thing Doc... I don't have any public videos at the moment. Until there is a reliable way to protect my videos from being downloaded, I want to limit access to them to the people I invite to view my galleries.
I don't understand what purpose is being served by intentionally disabling protected videos on the iPhone to someone who inputs the appropriate password. It seems like a bug to me... especially because if I log in to my account with my iPhone, I can still access my unlisted/protected galleries (as expected) and I can even see the thumbnails for the videos in question. The only thing I can't do is play them.
I would really appreciate it if you could either pass along this info to the powers that be so that this issue gets fixed, or offer an explanation as to the reason(s) things are the way they are.
Thanks Doc,
-J
