I didn't know that one could get a certified
as a user of Adobe software until I read
about it here:

I found it very funny. Maybe wrongly so? What are
you thoughts about the sense of such a certificate?
Does it help me in any way as a photographer, or is
it just another way to throw cash into the mouth of
the certification industry?

From what I know of them the Certifications are for those who help and teach others about a specific Adobe product. It is an advertising point for those selling or otherwise offering there services with respect to Adobe products.
If you are doing Retouch up of images for others as a service you might want to be certified. All of Scott Kelby's Trainers at NAPP are certified in the Apps they train.
Hope that helps,
Don

FWIW:
The latest job posting I saw from Austin Community College was looking for someone with an AA or BA in photography AND Adobe certification.

Sounds like this stuff is more for those who work for others with that software.

If it's anything like certification in software, it's a big boondoggle. HR types love it because they can use it to arbitrarily cut down the number of job applicants, while the real pros know that certification has zero value as a predictor of job performance. It does create jobs for the trainers, though.

I am starting to think this IS in fact exactly like certification in it software.
As university students we get 50%+ discounts for those IT certificates
exams (sun, cisco, comptia etc. via prometric) and also free training
(albeit online only). So I took some certificates/exams a while ago and
thought it would create a good impression for my student job at fraunhofer.
But nobody cared, not even my other clients. Im definitely not going to
do it with Photostoftware too. I should've bought a lens or two for the
money spent.
