custom functions not sticking...40D

I turned on my camera today and noticed that it had gone from RAW to JPEG Large and also did not have some of my custom functions saved as I preferred. I changed a couple things back, turned off the camera, took out the CF card, put it back in, turned the camera back on and it had reverted back again to the wrong settings. I feel silly asking this, but is there a battery that may need replacing or something? What's going on?

By any chance are you going from P/Av/Tv/M to one of those picture modes?
If so, I think you cannot use custom functions or RAW with the picture modes.

D'oh! Thank you! In all the shuffling around in my camera bag this morning, the dial got moved from M to C1. I feel a bit stupid, but relieved! :rolleyes All's well now! :D
