View Full Version : looking at this bag..bit over the top or ok ?
I can pick this up 'as new' from another site (http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Shoulder_Bags/allWeather/Magnum_AW.aspx) for about $130 USD. I think they sell new for about $200 USD ( that is from what i can see)
I have no idea what to buy but is this just too big to lump around ? Ive never carried any thing like it. Looks like plenty of room for my 254875 chargers & portable H/D though.
Photo if the link isnt working. Its a Magnum AW.

gus, you'll quickly find that your bag gets pretty heavy, (especially as you intend to get some long glass), for that reason I just swapped my 4 month old shoulder bag for a backpack!

What gubbsy says. I would recommend a backpack.
Plus, get the right backpack and fewer people will know what's in it.

I've gone the other way, from backpack to shoulder. I like the easier access of a shoulder bag. Gustacious, the key is that the bag be able to hold all the lenses you plan to take with you. And for me, it has to fit in the topbox as well, which limits exterior dimensions.

tks for the input guys. Im with the waxed one here as i am already taking my backpack off every 3 mins to do something...drives me crazy. I didnt think about it fitting into the topbox......i dropped it off once at 70 mph :huh I think i may not have locked it that day though.
I didnt think to look in B&H US...any time past 8.30pm & im incoherant...early riser. I will have a good look at them as they seem a bit smaller than the original one i was looking at.

So I broke down and bought a top box to put more camera gear in. I can barely
get the Tenba case in that. As long as I limit what I take, I can get it into a shoulder
bag that will fit into the right side case :thumb

Humungous, you are on a slippery slope :rofl
I'm starting to buy bags like my wife buys shoes. Problem is it's such a subjective kind of thing. Back or shoulder? Top load? Messenger style or sling style? etc. etc.
I've gone to a two-bag setup mostly. I take a large bag like in your post and a smaller (at this time a Tamrac Velocity 7) shoulder bag with me. When I get to where I'm going to shoot I put the camera around my neck on a strap and fill the shoulder bag with lenses and *stuff*. It works pretty well unless I need to carry two bodies.
I agree with the others that although the back packs look very comfortable and able to hold a trunk load of gear, accessing that gear looks to be a p.i.t.a. Perhaps a small back pack and a small shoulder bag (for your 20D with lens mounted) would be the best compromise? :dunno
Currently I'm looking at the Lowepro Specialist 85 AW or Pro Mag 2 AW. I like the idea of a somewhat narrow (6.5") shoulder bag. The advantage of the Specialist is that it is reverse opening for easier access.
Obviously your options are endless....
Enjoy the quest!

I have a toploader, which is nice to use when walking around and taking pictures, but it is a pain to use in a stationary fashion when you might want to put it down and go through it, since it flops over (because the bottom is narrower than the top, duh).
I would like to add something like the Crumpler Tallee or Next Venue; a little more (and better organized storage), and a little less likely to topple.

Check into backpaks, they make it alot easier to carry your gear in. I have the Lowepro Mini-Trekker AW and its great.
