When you click on one of my categories, I have a few lines of introduction. It all runs together in one paragraph. I want it to be separate lines.
What do I need to enter in the code so the lines will break.
Right now it all runs on and on and on in one long paragraph. I don't like that. There are several sentences but I want to add line breaks like below.

For HTML, you can use the HTML codes <br> for a single new line or <p> for a new paragraph.

Well - I tried that - maybe it's not in HTML - one of the SmugMug people set it up for me.
Cause when I put in <br> it did nothing.
When I tried the <P> - now, it doesn't even show up! Guess that is what it does when there is an error.
Hmmm..
Any other ideas?

It's hard for me to offer more help without knowing what exact page on your site you are talking about and what exact text is in the edit box when you edit it. If you want HTML codes to work in category descriptions, then the description must start with <html> and end with </html>. If you don't need html codes to work, then just use a carriage return to add a new line.

Not sure how you link to my customization page.
Doesn't really matter which page I am talking about - EVERY page can have a "description" - so check any page.
In my Java Header (or whatever it is called) here is what it has
function addCategoryDescription() {
var categoryDescription = {
"Wedding_Art" : "Your Wedding is All about YOU! Photography is the art of capturing your emotions while you enjoy the experience! Your Wedding Day is a one time event...there are no re-dos. My use of a combination of traditional and candid photography gives you treasured memories you and your children will cherish forever. I personally photograph your wedding in a professional manner representing you well as I mingle with your friends and family. Ask about Custom Albums and Save The Date Magnets. I look forward to speaking with you soon.",
This is what it says on my Wedding Art page...http://studiovphotography.smugmug.com/Wedding%20Art

I don't know how. You've got some complicated Javascript that is inserting those descriptions. They aren't added in your site like normal category descriptions. The custom javascript probably needs to be modified to allow insertion of actual HTML (so you can add line formatting in the text) instead of insertion of just text, but that's beyond what I can figure out easily. Do you know who the original author of this Javascript is because that's who would most likely know how to modify it to do what you want?

I just "Contacted Me" from my "Contact Me" tab - and sent myself an email.
I did not receive it - it has been 10 minutes...why am I not receiving emails?????
email is vicki@studiovphotography.com
Checked all settings and they all say vicki@studiovphotography.com
Same is true with the About Me page - have EMail Me there and I tried it as well - and still no email.

Hi Vicki, I'm so sorry, but this is nothing to do with SmugMug :(
Your email links are working fine, I checked them myself.... you click, they fire up my email client.
If you are not receiving mails check with your ISP or email provider, I'm sorry I can't personally help you more with that.

OK - just called them - I use Comcast.
They went to my web page and tried to Contact Me and when they do - they get a window with a FILE MENU and at top in blue bar it says PC-PINE
And at bottom is says a bunch of error messages - error - can't connect - refused, cancelled, keeps scrolling error messages at them.
What now?

Think I will just cancel email and cancel SmugMug - I can't stand to deal with companies that just blame the problem on each other.
Comcast says their email is fine.
You say SmugMug is fine.
So - what in the H88L am I supposed to do???
All I know is that I have not received ANY emails from my account (which is NOT normal) in the past 2-3 months and I have NO idea why and I can't seem to get any help.
Guess I wil find an email server that also does webpages - that way when something doesn't work - they will have no one else to blame it on!

You can't blame SM or Comcast because you don't have your email client configured correctly! SM works just fine. Comcast is useless, but, probably this time it isn't their issue (although, the PC-PINE reference made me chuckle.. The person on tech support apparently doesn't have a clue :rolleyes
If you really want an email link (actually, I recommend a form anyways), and a working/good email account, I can create it for you--for a fee. Otherwise, I suggest you need to calm down and start from the beginning and deal with one issue at a time. It works far better that way.

VJ, I'm just a random person in the forums here trying to help. I'm not sure you understand what is going on with the two issues you've mentioned so far or you might be looking for help in different places.
On the category title, you have some super custom javascript in your page. It is a fairly advanced style of script so it was clearly written by someone who knows what they are doing, but it's not particularly easy for others to figure out how to change it into what you are asking for. If you got it from Barb, then your best bet is to ask her who wrote it and how you might contact them to ask for a further customization to it.
Many times, when people ask nicely, there are volunteers here in the forums who will help you figure things out. But, they are just volunteers - they help people that they want to help. Demanding to have someone help you with your own customization isn't usually the best way to attract a volunteer.
On the contact email, I don't think you understand how the contact email works in your browser. Let me try to explain and then maybe you can have a better idea where to look for the problem. What you have inserted in your page for the contact me link is an instruction to the browser to open your own local email client, prepopulate an email address and then turn the addressing of the email over to the local email client. If the email client comes up, then the code you put in your page and the browser have done their job. If the email doesn't arrive after you send it, that's completely between your email client and your ISP. It literally has nothing to do with Smugmug. Smugmug did it's part by delivering the instruction to the browser. The browser did it's part by invoking the email client with an email address pre-populated. At this point, you need a properly configured email client and an email ISP that matches that configuration. It works for Andy and I which tells us both that the web page is fine and the problem is something local on your own machine configuration or your own ISP email configuration, neither of which we can see. What email client do you normally use for your comcast email? Is your comcast email the same as the vicki@studiovphotography.com email or are they different? According to WhoIs, it looks like studiovphotography.com is registered on your behalf through comcast, but the mail server is hosted by network solutions. If you aren't receiving email on it, then you need to contact whomever you are paying for that email. If comcast says it's working fine then get them to show you how to recieve the email. I hope you can see that while I sometimes hang out here to volunteer to help people with Smugmug issues, this doesn't seem to have anything to do with Smugmug. You should be able to completely remove Smugmug from the equation to get your email working. When you can send/receive regular email (nothing to do with Smugmug) from your vicki@studiovphotography.com account, then we can come back and try to figure out why the contact link is working on your computer.

There's a limitation with that particular code; you can use it to inject a text message into the category views, but, it can't contain html. So, what she wants is IMHO not going to happen without some very big hacks.
When I've tried to insert html into it in the past it doesn't work; although, you could always try to insert " \n " (no quotes) where you want linebreaks. It's how I format my right-click protection with multiple lines.

Yeah, I realize that. The script probably needs to be changed to insert some actual innerHTML instead of just text (so that it can contain full HTML), but that's beyond what I can easily figure out. I don't know if the \n trick will work or not in this case since returns are generally ignored in HTML text. They work in the right-click protection message because that's a Javascript dialog which does respect carriage returns.

Wow. OK I can see you are angry, and frustrated. I'm very sorry about that, VJ. Your email link, and emails from me to you work fine. Email is not a SmugMug thing, we never have been in the email business, and so I'm sorry you would cancel SmugMug because you can't get your email client working :(
Email us at our help desk if you wish - we'll see if we can dig deeper into your email issue. We have some specialists on the team that are great at this (Doc!). If you choose to leave over this, write to me at the help desk and I'll provide you a refund of your subscription - not something we normally do but in this case I'll make an exception because I do not want you to be unhappy with us in the least, especially for something that isn't part of our service.
I hope you'll stay though, I really, really do.

Vicki,
Before you cancel, can I help? The guys are right, there is something that is not configured right with your email client. I just checked the link and it brought up my gmail email page in no time. We need to figure out where to set the "default" email client preference on your computer and it should start working.
I used to deal with this all the time. My old job reset these preferences each night for some odd reason. So each morning that I was working with emailing people from the web, I had to change it back to where outlook would load automatically with the address prepopulated. Luckily I finally convinced them to not reset it each night.
If you want me to help Email me on the help desk. Attn: Doc I will do everything I can to help you get this working. The wife and I have to run into town today but I will be back around later.

Hi, we've been with you all along :thumb
Barb can't change the 'hack' it's a community written hack and she didn't write it, she just put it on your site for you.
Here's the hack and the thread to post in, if you want to see about possibly getting it changed, okay?

So - what am I suppposed to do - learn about hack and fix it myself...NOT. I am not a computer guru and don't care to learn.
All I know is that I told Barb what I would like on my site, we discussed the slideshow, etc. and she told me when it was ready. Where she got it or if she wrote it or who wrote it for her - I have no idea...all I know is that after I spoke to Barb - it appeared.
So - guess I will start where I left off (which was with Barb) and hopefully she can fix it (or ask whoever wrote it for her) or maybe - even better - she can redo it so others can help me in her absence!
So - how do I know when Barb is working???

Hello VJ, As I said, Barb can't change it either. Let me try and explain more.
You came and asked for some function - Support Hero Barb provided you with a hack that was written by a community member - the hack provides longer descriptions. She put it on your site for you.
I'm really sorry that the hack doesn't suit you right now. Perhaps there's a JS guru that can change it or modify it. That's why I gave you the direct link to the thread where the hack is, so you could kindly ask for assistance there (the place where people who use, and know the hack) will best see your request.
Does this make sense?
We really want to help you. Oh and I'm so thrilled your email issue is all sorted out! :thumb

The fix was a simple answer to this question - "who is your email handler"...
Wish someone had asked that question rather than blaming other providers.
As far as the "hack" issue - I keep being told that whoever wrote the hack has to fix it. I got that part.
Nobody ever answers...
...so, I keep asking - can't the hack be REPLACED with HTML so that the normal person can fix it?
Can SmugMug only be customized with hack?
Can't you put decriptions on your webpage without using hack???
But - never mind answering.
When my subscription is up later this year - I doubt I will be renewing - going to search for a new website designer/host and hopefully I can find one by then.
Rather sad - all I want is to put space to break up some lines in my descriptions and you would think I am asking for a million dollars.
I can have blank lines in my "About Me" paragraphs - why can' t I have blank lines in my descriptions??
Well, I guess I can - I just have to wait for some hack-writer to tell me how.
So - never mind.

The email problem had nothing to do with Smugmug, yet you still make it sound like they should have helped you to fix it. That's like complaining to your car manufacturer that the stove in your home isn't working right. It has nothing to do with each other!
Adding captions to categories isn't a feature Smugmug has--without a hack. BUT, I can personally think of a few ways to do exactly what you want, and it would look great (using HTML pages, etc..). But, you'll find that you get more flies with honey.
Every single post on this forum is from someone who VOLUNTEERED their time to post and/or answer your questions (well, Andy is paid by SM as their Manager, as are the Support Heros), BUT, everyone else is doing this for FREE on dgrin.
I am posting this because I really like SM, and I hate to see SM trashed because someone (you) think they are responsible for fixing YOUR email issues. Why not also complain that they didn't change the oil in your car too? For them to even OFFER to help is going FAR and BEYOND what should be expected of them. Do you think you'd get that type of Customer Service ANYWHERE ELSE? Do you REALLY think that some other photo site will help you fix something that ISN'T even their problem??

Hello VJ, we (me-SmugMug and the helpers here) never blamed anyone. We tried to show you that it was working for us, and one SmugMug customer, jfriend, a customer just like you, took a long time to write out a very thorough helpful explanation.

Possibly, stay tuned in the hack's thread as you've posted there.
Can SmugMug only be customized with hack?
Of course not. There are tons of ways to pimp out your Smug site without javasript hacks.
Can't you put decriptions on your webpage without using hack???
We have one buit-in - but it's not long enough for you, so you are using the hack.

We'll truly be sorry to see you go. Perhaps another company, where you can pay $thousands of dollars per year, for the types of specialized requests you have, might be more suited to you. But far easier would be to just work with us, and those that are trying their hardest, to help you :thumb

Because they are different types of pages and the underlying code is handled differently.
Well, I guess I can - I just have to wait for some hack-writer to tell me how.

My final thought after reading all of your heartfelt messages....
I am so sorry I am not a computer guru.
I am so sorry I did not know before I posted original message that my customization was done with something called hack.
I am so sorry I did not even know what hack was. When the first reference was made to hack I just assumed it was a mispelling of something.
I am so sorry I did not know Barb did not write my so called hack.
I am so sorry I thought a person could write HTML to fix my hack.
I am so sorry that I thought SmugMug should have known about "email handlers" since they told me how to put an Email Me on my homepage.
I am so GREATEFUL that Network Solutions knew about "email handlers". No, they would not fix it either - they passed me off to Microsoft.
I am so GRATEFUL that locating my setting for my "email handler" was not too hard to find (once I knew what I was looking for, I was able to correct the incorrect setting)...had it been too hard, I would never have found it nor would I have been able to fix it as I am computer dumb...and, don't care to change.
I am so sorry I don't understand that each company can only be asked to help with certain issues.
I am so sorry I don't know "where" those lines are drawn...let's see - SM tells me how to put Email Me link but they don't answer 'why' I 'may' not be getting my own emails...??? Where is that fine line? How am I supposed to know where that line is?
To DrDavid-I am so sorry that I "assumed" companies would help me with email issues - just to help me - not cause it was "part of their job description" or "part of their volunteering expectations".
To DrDavid-I am so sorry that I have been in a customer service oriented business since 1973 - nothing to do with photography or computers (thank you know who) and I guess I still expect to receive the service equal to the service I provide. "I" still understand what customer service is and I always have and always will go above and beyond for my marketing/advertising clients.
To DrDavid-I am so sorry that I believe that the lack of customer service in this world is partially what is wrong with business/economy today.
To DrDavid-I am so sorry that you think SM asking me "who is my email handler" would have been too much to ask.
I am so sorry I obviously expected more than SM or any of the volunteers can/want to/will/care to/are able to/etc etc etc...not sure what else to add.
I am sorry!!
My email issue is fixed - I promise NEVER to contact SM again about email issues even though they are related to the EMAIL ME link on my home page.
If I decide to leave SM, you won't even miss me but it's nice of you to say you will.
If I decide to stay with SM, again, you will probably not even notice...but, if I do - I will be sure to 'ask' IF anyone cares to help me with "whatever" it is - even though it may be out of the scope of SM before I even post my question.
Or, better yet - I will just personally email the people I have met thru SM that have ALWAYS been enormously helpful - they have gone above and beyond the SM expectations.
And - I have no idea what this means so I am not sure how to respond...
'Now, shall we get started? '
Shall we get started "what"?
Working on my "hack"? No thank you.
Working on my HTML? No thank you.
Also - I promise NEVER to ask SM to change my oil.

And - I have no idea what this means so I am not sure how to respond...

For 5 years here, I don't bs about anything, VS, I promise you that.
It means, I truly just want to help you, if you wish to have it - the same way I've helped thousands here before you.
But help is a two-way street here :D
I hope you'll change your mind. If you do, great.

If I decide to leave SM, you won't even miss me but it's nice of you to say you will.
:cry You will be missed if you go. The wife and I are still planning to come to Indy. I was going to contact you closer to June so that we could plan a way to meet.
I wish that I could help you with the Hack stuff but that is not my area of expertize. I copy and paste that stuff myself.
I am so glad that you got the email stuff figured out.
You are right about customer service being what is wrong with business today. But I can assure you the only reason I came to SmugMug was the way we treat customers is by far the best I have seen.
From the inside, I am amazed at what we do for customers that is never spoken of or reported to the other customers. We try not to venture too far outside of the what is SmugMug related. There are so many variables with things like email programs, ISP's, email server settings, and such that we cannot know them all. Sometimes it is better to go back to the vendor of that product for assistance.

Not sure what you can help with - thought you couldn't help with Hack.
No - I am done fooling with it. It will just have to stay like it is.
Maybe somebody will actually answer me on the other thread.

I'm sorry, you must not be seeing what I'm posting. :thumb I have contacted the author of the hack, on your behalf. He is in Australia (sleeping right now).
We ask your patience while this process happens.

I'm sorry - I DO see what you wrote - it's below - shall I also include the note you sent about sending me to the other thread because you couldn't help me with hack.....(and now you want to help me?? and you wonder why I am confused)!

I posted a note on the other thread as you told me to do - you told me you were "glad I was in the correct spot"...but since the guy is sleeping - I have other things to do.
I had set aside time last night to work on it.
Unfortunately, I didn't get it fixed last night.
It will have to stay the way it is until I get around to finding another block of time to work on it.
I own/work in two full time businesses - sole proprietor of both. I don't have time to just drop everything and play with the website whenever I want to and/or whenever he answers.
If and when he answers, I guess I will find the reply on the thread whenever I get back on there - sometime in the future...unless they are deleted after awhile.
In the meantime - until I get back to it which could be a month or so - never mind.
Go help somebody else - someone that you can help with something other than hack issues.

I can't believe how rude you're being, and how utterly accomodating Andy is being. He's going out of his way to get you FREE custom programming, and you can't even wait for someone to wake up who lives in Australia???
If it were up to me, I'd probably just offer you a refund of your subscription and wipe my hands clean. Luckily for you, it's NOT up to me. Andy et al doesn't need this--especially when they're going out of their way for you!
