If you had to pick a Senior Picture lens

I am going to go out and purchase a new lens for my Canon 40D today, and want to know what you would buy, or have and love. Not super steap on price, but something that will be worth my while of course. :wink

My only other lens is a 70-200 f.28 IS which is nice, but I need something smaller. :scratch

Depending on the budget, I would go for the 85 1.8 if you're on a budget. If not, the 85 1.2 or the 24-70 2.8 or the 24-105 4.0 is; Also consider the 50 1.2 or 1.4

135 f2 prime. Longish i know but its lightning fast..great colour & arguably canons sharpest lens. Also amazing bokeh.

How many individuals?
What poses?

For the price, you can't beat the 85mm f/1.8 lens. That said, if you have to do any group photos and don't have a ton of room, it'll be too long. 50mm f/1.4 would be a bit wider but around the same price and very good quality.

If you have more $$$ and want to diversify your focal lengths you can't beat the 17-55 EF-S f/2.8 lens.

"Smaller" as in "lighter" -- then try the 70-200 f4 IS. F4 is fine for portrait when you have the 200 end to blur out the background.

If the 70-200 is "too long" -- then a good companion lens is the Canon 24-105 f4 IS.

It's an f4 -- but it's long enough to help get decent background blur. It's also wide enough for when you have multiple people.

I know folks like the Canon 85mm f1.8 -- but on a crop sensor camera it's quite long. Great for headshots -- but you need a lot of room to work with it. I love this lens too, but it really comes into it's on on the Canon 5D.

For a prime -- try the Canon 50mm f1.4 or the new Sigma 50mm f1.4 -- which should be nice portrait lenses for a crop sensor.
