Hi,

I'm pretty new here and to SmugMug. I decided to get the Pro account for various reasons, one being the video uploading capabilities. I've tried several video uploading, and while being successful, the speed of uploading is so painfully slow that I actually set it to upload before I go sleep.

My question is, for uploading a video of, let's say 300-400mb size, what's been your own experience in terms of speed? I'm by the way a Comcast cable customer. Thanks.

I've found that Comcast frequently choke the connection when you have a large upload.

Thanks for the response. I was thinking about calling Comcast...

Another thing you can try is to encode it before uploading to reduce the file size. We recommend H.264 (MPEG-4) and AAC for the audio.

The bitrates we use are here: http://wiki.smugmug.com/display/SmugMug/Video+Formats

<table class="confluenceTable"><tbody><tr><th class="confluenceTh"> Size </th> <th class="confluenceTh"> Video
</th> <th class="confluenceTh"> Audio
</th> </tr> <tr> <td class="confluenceTd"> Hi-Def </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 1280x720 3.2Mbps H.264 Baseline Profile </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 128kbps 48KHz stereo AAC-LC </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="confluenceTd"> Mid-Def </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 960x540 1.8Mbps H.264 Baseline Profile </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 128kbps 48KHz stereo AAC-LC </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="confluenceTd"> iPod/DVD </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 640x480 1.2Mbps H.264 Baseline Profile </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 128kbps 48KHz stereo AAC-LC </td> </tr> <tr> <td class="confluenceTd"> Web </td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 320x240 512Kbps H.264 Baseline Profile
</td> <td class="confluenceTd"> 128kbps 48KHz stereo AAC-LC</td></tr></tbody></table>
My 1280 HD video is generally about 20 to 40 MB per minute after exporting from iMovie and looks great.

Thank you for the information. I'll try to reduce the file size and see how that goes...

Also you can check your speed to smugmug here.

Click on the San Jose version and let us know what it says. Here's my roadrunner results from San Diego.

Wow, that's a cool stuff! Here's my result that I just tested:

Thanks! For download, Comcast is faster, but for upload, it's slower. Hmm.... Is this about right for a major cable carrier?

Here's another test WHILE my laptop was transferring a video from my hard disk to SmugMug...
