shooting with a 50-500 sigma lens.

if the lens is backfocusing I'm I wrong in thinking to move it to the + side to fix it?

Yes, you will have to test it by shooting at a focusing target. I haven't tried doing a focus adjustment on a zoom yet but set it up on a tripod and shoot at a focusing target. Try various adjustments until you get the sharpest results. I would try to adjust it the most frequently used focal length (I'm guessing 500mm).
