can I make galleries be 2 or 3 across

on my Portfolio and Proofs page I want to make the galleries to be 2 or 3 across instead of straight down. is there a way to do this?

Yes I read it but there were so many posts going back and forth addind different stuff I was so lost??? Any way to explain in simpler terms?
