Hi there. I am looking to customize the navabr and actually make it a sidebar. If this possible? If so, where could I obtain the code for the needed item.

Given that your smugmug-style galleries use the full width of the screen, I don't really think that a navbar on the side is going to work too well.
The only way I think a side navbar would work is if you could embed your site in a frame, and SmugMug doesn't play well in that environment.
Is there a reason why you want to move it? If you're trying to get more space at the top of your site, why not turn off the default smugmug header? Also, you could consider making your banner a little shorter. Making those two changes would leave more room on the screen for your photos.
