I took this last year without realizing it's significance. Don't know how widely this building in Rockport, Massachusetts is known, but in the art communities it is called "Motif Number One". I didn't know that when I took the shot - proof positive that some special places really are magnetic. Anyway, I'm proud of this shot and would love to know others impressions - critique away...

It is the backside of a very well known sight in NE. I have a couple shots myself.
I like this one, because it is not the side many do. I also like the fog surrounding Motif #1 here and separating it from the congested harbor it is in.

I wonder how it'd look with the boats and crane in the background cloned out. Keep the buildings, though. :wink
Beautiful shot. :thumb :thumb

Thanks, Don. It is tough to keep this scene from being cluttered nowadays, so I was very fortunate to have the fog. I'd love to see your shots of this.

Funny...the part that bothers me the most is the more modern building in the background. I feel the boats (and less so the crane) give this its setting in a working harbor. The one really good thing about that building in the back is that it really shows how thick the fog is. If only it was an older building it would fit better.
Thanks for the comments!

Nice, Don. I'll have to go check out that other side of Motif #1. My folks live in Gloucester, MA, so I'm there every few months.

Then you ought to get out to Halibut Point (old quarry), too. Interesting shooting, Stoney seashore, birds, etc.

The other building is the Sandy Bay Yacht Club, the club house was built in the 30's I believe.
Nice shot. It's hard to resist shooting from the front when all the buoys are up.

This morning I was looking at this again... Love the fog and traps, but it feels like the side angle may be too severe. Had you swung around a little more, lessening the severity of the side view , the radar that seems right on top of the motif would have been more in the background and you could have cloned out what was left. I might have liked to see the boat in the front in it's entirety too. Overall a very nice photo though, congratulations!

Thanks for the critiques. Good thought on the angle and getting the entire boat in the picture. I didn't realize the other building was so old. Thanks for that info! I'm still not sure it fits the setting. I don't think I'll be able to recreate the fog, but I will be back there shortly and may try to reshoot.

The 'front' of Sandy Bay Yacht Club facing the water is much more attractive, the side view is obviously not so spectacular. There is a place on the other side of the harbor that works especially well for harbor/motif shots, although I have to admit most of my Motif photos are from the front because of easy parking on T-Wharf. While not anything to write home over I have a couple of them on my website (http://marybethglasmann.smugmug.com/Places/400125) ...
There are so many photogenic spots on Cape Ann. I run a photography excursion group and there is no shortage of photo ops. Hope you get a chance to visit some of the others during your next trip up!

I would love to get a bit more of an impression from the red building.
