Greetings all..
Not much in the way of egrets out here, so we work with what we have..
(All 20D w/ 100-400L + 1.4X. RAW)

OK, every now and then, when we look real, real hard, we can maybe find an egret or a heron far, far away...

Very nice, Rich. :thumb
That first one's a honey! What type of birdy is that?
I just got the 100-400 last week.:clap I see you used it with the 1.4 TC...what's the deal with that? Does it AF and if so...how well?

I'd really like to know as well, I plan on buying one this week :wink .
I also agree the first one is great. Not a bad shot in the set:clap :clap.

Only have a sec..
The camera you're using probably only autofocuses with lenses f/5.6 or faster. The 100-400 with the 1.4 is f/8, so AF won't work. There is a workaround where you tape a few pins on the TC and AF works (somewhat) but it's really hit and miss.
I have been using manual focus and getting good results. I was thinking about getting te Katz Eye manual focus screen. I can manually focus the 100-400 with the 1.4, but getting good focus with the 2X has proven to be a challenge.
With the 1.4 you'll go out to 560mm and not take a noticable image quality hit.
I'll get back to you with specifics about how to taoe the pins on the 1.4X if you want the information.
Back to work :cry

After thinking about it, I will probably never use the tc with the 100-400 because I use the tc with my IDMIIN and 400 DO IS lens. The 100-400 is going to stay attached to my 40D...I really like it. I was afraid of the zoom...but now I actually prefer it to the twist type.

Geez, Harry, you guys kill me. I look at the EXIF of some of these incredible shots and I'm seeing 200mm, 185mm, 300mm. They come so darn close. You guys are really lucky..
Cheers
