Hi there! I have a pro account and I'd like to start fully customizing my SmugMug site since I have my own domain name and I'd like to think that I paid for the pro account to be able to do just that. One of the first things that comes to my mind is making sure it will look 100% mine and for that I'd like to not see any explicit reference to SmugMug itself, such as the footer that has "powered by SmugMug (http://www.smugmug.com/)". I would think that having the reference within the source code is acceptable, but not on the actual site pages.

Now, in the Customize page I have clicked "show SmugMug footer" to "no" but I still see that footer showing up. How to remove it?

Removing that portion is a violation of the usage rights agreement you are bound by... atleast that's what I was told...

Hi, can't remove the powered by SmugMug and our © SmugMug parts.

Sorry about that!

That is highly disappointing... I guess even for this money I am still supposed to be a marketing tool, and the idea that I got from reading through the feature list of a Pro account wrt full customization is a lie.

From the Faq section

The rule: You can customize to you heart's content as long as you don't completely hide SmugMug's footer. It can be pretty small (http://www.moonriverphotography.com/), though!
http://www.smugmug.com/help/custom-colors2

Just because you didn't understand something does not make it unknown or a lie.

If you don't like it, I am sure your free to build the engine yourself on your own site.

I think it's a fair deal an exceptionally fair deal.

I could be spending $80 per month for the hosting thats is 1/4 of what I get here. Then pay a web developer to create the shell for my site for about $3000 to be almost equal to the quality of smug mug and then I'd still have to customize it myself if it's php.

So for what you pay for smug mug you could be spending $4000 for the first year and $1000 each following year for just the web hosting.

I'll take putting powered by smug mug over all that cause these guys friggin rock!

Last I checked, even software like "Gallery2" and other OSS software has a 'powered by' line on it. It's not a big deal IMHO. But, I need to echo a statement above: just because you didn't bother reading the terms and conditions, doesn't mean they lied to you. It means you didn't bother to read... :rolleyes

I'm not sure why you are disappointed to have a small / even tiny of you want, "powered by" text in your footer. Everyone has their photos hosted somewhere... so it's understandable the company wants those who admire the gallery you've created, to know that it was custimzed on Smugmug.

I hope you agree and continue to enjoy your smugmug cutomizations...
you really can custimize to your hearts content: as long as you just leave
Smugmug the opportunity to let those know what is possible on a Smugmug site.

If you want something to complain about... ask about the page title. Here's something we can't customize. Well, we can but it's only cosmetic. My latest surprise happened today. I sent a link to one of my gallery on a forum and only wrote the URL. When I clicked submit, I supposed it's vBulletin that automatically used the page title as anchor text. That text was "Borealphoto.com- Powered by Smugmug".

Will Smugmug actually change this or just say "we heard you" and not do anything for three years?

Yes you can change it but it's only cosmetic. I used to have it but removed it because it only adds more JS and does nothing for search engines.

This bugs me to no end. Same thing with description tags. Why does Smugmug has to put their own?

Actually, if you completely remove the page title (so that it is blank) in the co-brand, and go into a gallery, you'll see something interesting..... Too bad We can't get it both ways. :(

That's what I did. It's the only way to have something revelent in the title. But it only shows in the galleries, not on home, gallery or category pages. I couldn't stand the "powered by Smugmug" at first by now I could live with it if SM would stop messing with the home, gallery and category page titles as well as decriptions (Google picks up SM description if we don't add our own, but I don't need a freaking description!!!)

You could always program your own website, then you can have ONLY your copyright at the bottom of the screen.

Just a thought....

Just letting you know ...

the "powered by" tag in the footer and the additional branding in the search engines, as well as the overcomplicated feature bloat, is a dealbreaker for me.

While smugmug is wonderful for photosharing, and perhaps even some wedding and event pros, and is a "great deal," it makes you look silly for serious editorial or art photography or portfolio presentation. It's just what it is, and I'm just letting you know ...

thank you ...

Silly?

I think that's over the top. Your work is awesome and would never be diminished by the word SmugMug on the footer of your pages, Seastack.

Andy, respectfully, I'm passing on feedback i have received, i.e. you don't look like a serious photographer with branding from a "photo sharing" site on your web pages. "Over the top," perhaps, but it's just what it is and I offer this as constructive feedback as it was given to me. Thanks for the compliment, I keep trying.

Sure you can have nothing - but you'd' have to build and host your own site, I suppose.

We may one day have another level, above Pro, where you could pay more to remove that. We'll see.

I can tell you there are gobs of photographers making $$$$$$ and they don't worry about it so much :) We just sent out pro checks again and it was A LOT of money to A LOT of photographers :)

I don't mind the smugmug logo at the bottom of my page, but I am wondering if there is any way we can get rid of the "powered by smugmug" that appears on google searches?

Thanks!

So seastack,

How do you feel about right click protection? Smugmug makes that REALLY easy. Worth the $12 a month just for that.
