I'm pretty much new to my SLR, or any SLR for that matter. I have a press pass that can get me on the sideline to take pictures of some CIFL indoor football games. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a lense that would get decent results? I don't really need a huge zoom, I'm only going to take pictures as the play gets towards my end of the field. Any help would be appreciated.

28-70 f2.8 or get the 80-200 f2.8. Either way get an f2.8 lens.

At least a 70-200 f2.8.

Even better the 400 f2.8. It is a very pricy piece of glass though.

You need some fast glass for indoor sports as the light is not going to be all that great. At least f2.8. The 70-200 would be a good lens in a decent price range.

I used a Canon EF 70-200mm, f2.8L for night football with good results. A Canon 1D MKII/MKIIN/MKIII really is the ideal Canon camera platform for night and indoor sports, but a Canon 40D would be a fairly good alternative. I'm not sure the autofocus section of XTi is really up to the demands of low-light sports (although I used an XT/350D with limited sucess.)

:agree The suggested lenses ought to work, but I worry about whether the Rebel is up to the task.

Thanks for the ideas. I took a few pictures from the upper bowl of the arena, and they didn't turn out too bad, except for the motion. But, then I took into account that I'm new to SLR's and was in the first row of the upper bowl, with just my kit lens, no tripod... etc.. So I knew they weren't going to be great. Only prob. is, right now I don't have enough money to invest into a lens that costs more than the camera did.. ha ha... If there are any cheaper alternatives that will get me by, please let me know. Thanks again tho, I'll keep the lens that was mentioned in mind for the future.

The XTi will be great for sports! not amazing but you can do it very easily... not everyone needs to use the XXD or XD series

I shot all of the bball/swimming
photos on my flickr with
XT and 70-200 2.8L IS

You could possibly use the 135 2.0?? or the 85 1.8 or 200 2.8

:rofl Guess what? The body is just the price of entry to the DSLR world. It will soon be one of the less-expensive parts of your kit.

BTW, it would be more helpful if we could see the image EXIF (turn on image info) to see what the lens & settings were.

I knew going in that the lenses would be more expensive than the camera, just not in the budget for now...

Anyways, I turned the image info on, but it doesn't help much, cuz I didn't upload any of the original files, so there aren't any details. I didn't have time to wait for them to upload, being 3 +MP each. Just to let you know, I know I did everything wrong... ha ha.. Like I said, I'm new to the world of SLR and still don't have much of a clue as to what I'm doing, so I just put the camera on it's sports section and shot pictures, I didn't mess with anything manually...

I didn't upload the
