I've got a Mac, and i did try putting it in the USb witht he reader that came with it, and my comp picked it up as "unnamed" or "no name" or something.

if that doesn't work, try a hammer.
Seriously if it doesn't work out of the box, return it.

The Nikon D50 does not support SD-HC, so 2G is the largest that it was made to use. Some people are reporting success with 4G cards by formatting the card in a computer first. Those 4G cards appear to be regular SD however.
Rob Galbraith makes such a claim here (in the footnotes):

It also appears that the D50 will not report the correct number of remaining images with cards over 2G. I highly recommend you stay with 2G cards for the Nikon D50.

You might consider that the D50 came out in 2005 when SD cards did not have the HC (High Capacity) format. That doesn't make it a bad camera just long in the tooth. I happen to love mine.

This isn't just a problem with the D50. For a device to read or write to a SDHC card (4GB and larger) they have to be made to use that format. This icludes everything from cameras to mp3 players. Of course, some devices could have firmware upgraded to allow the devices to work, ut with something as old as a D50 I wouldn't hold my breath.
EDIT: Didn't even realize but this was my 1,000th post at DGrin. How time flies! LoL

To me the stupidest thing has to be using SD cards instead of Compact Flash.

There is nothing wrong with the SD format at all. The D50 is just old is why it wont take the newer cards as, was said. Just format it out of the camera.

If you have something to contribute to the OP's original question, feel free. Otherwise,
enough with the snide comments.
Thanks,
Ian
