View Full Version : The Full Screen Slideshow Help Thread

Hi Folks! On March 17th we released (http://blogs.smugmug.com/release-notes/2008/03/17/silky-smooth-slideshow-eye-candy/) a new version of our Full Screen Slideshow and also the gallery-style slideshow.
If you are having any difficulties with the slideshow, we want to help, and we'll do it here. Some things we need to know when you reply:
1. We need to know your installed flash version, for IE (if you use it) and for other browsers. Go to this page at Adobe (http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507) and tell us the results.
2. We need to know what browser you are using, and the version, and on what Operating System. E.g., IE6 on WinXP; IE7 on Windows Vista Home Premium; Firefox 2.0.0.13 on Mac OS X 10.5.
3. We need a direct gallery link to where you are having the problem.
4. Tell us if you can use the Full Screen Slideshow here in this gallery (http://cmac.smugmug.com/gallery/2504559_f3ta9#131481399).
5. Tell us if you can see the Full Screen Slideshow using this share link (http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=2504559&AlbumKey=f3ta9).
6. If you can see #5 and cannot see #4, can you see the full screen at Adobe's Full Screen test here (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/features/experience/).
(click the full screen mode on the left, then let the demo load, then click full screen view button on the movie).
7. If you cannot see SmugMug's Full Screen Slideshow, or the Cars Movie Demo in full screen or the Adobe Full Screen Demo in full screen, you may have a hardware issue with full screen. Try disabling hardware acceleration in the flash player (http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=795785&postcount=86).
Some of you may have all the right stuff but have customizing that is getting in the way of your Full Screen Slideshow:
modifying the breadcrumb with javascript
having the olde javascript slideshow installed still
Looking for Shizam's Homepage Slideshow? Right Here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=73247).
EDIT (April 9th, 2008): We updated the site to support the latest Adobe Flash version (9,0,124,0) (http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash). You DO NOT require this version but if you have it or get it, you'll be fine. :)
EDIT (August 31, 2008): Adblock Plus and Firefox3 aren't playing well with FS Slideshow and Flash. Sorry :( We're trying to work on this and overcome the issue with Adblock plus, updates when we have them....

The symptoms are really strange too: not only does the slideshow not show up, but the button doesn't seem to be receiving a click. It's as if there is no onclick defined. When I click on any URL, my machine is set to make an audible 'click'...it does not click when I press the slideshow button. However, my cursor DOES change to 'clickable' when I mouse-over the slideshow button! Just nothing happens when I click! Weird!

I'm jumping into the fray a little late here. I was in Vegas for a week at WPPI and I come back to all these changes! But I'm not complaining, I love the idea of the slideshow, if I can get it to work.
I previously made my own post about my slideshow problems, not realizing there were 46 pages of fellow smuggers doing the same in more organized fashion on this thread... sorry about that!
I'm having the same symptoms Gary described about the button being unclickable. Here are my details:
Doing this both at home (wireless cable connection) and at work (something really fast and not wireless). Both machines running Win XP, though the work computer is quite a bit older. I've read some people posting about "Visitor View" but I haven't found that yet - where is that? Anyway, I create my own VV by using Firefox logged in and IE7 logged out so I can see both views. Therefore not sure if the following issues have to do with browser or logged in/out:
IE7/logged out - nothing happens when I click the slideshow button. No green or black square, no click noise... nothing. But mouse pointer turns into a hand on hover, so it seems to know there is a link there.
FF/logged in - button works fine.
Direct link to FFSSSS - if I cut and paste the link in either browser, also loads and works fine.
HOWEVER. When it does load (ff/logged in/cut and paste link) it seems to get stuck before finishing the slideshow and thumbs do not load - just black emptiness after the thumb of the last successfully diplayed image.
Direct FFSSSS link: http://loribrueseke.smugmug.com/phot...AlbumKey=SkMvo (http://loribrueseke.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=4494537&AlbumKey=SkMvo)
Gallery link:

Haven't tried other galleries. Was trying to send this one to a client, so naturally I am obsessing over that one.
Other feedback:
Can I add music? Does it have to be fullscreen --? there's a flaw when your screensaver kicks in. I kinda like it in a browser window.
Great job guys! I don't envy your jobs right now. Thanks for the tireless effort!:clap

My button is now clickable in IE.
Sometimes the first image is a small thumb.
The first time through, not all the images came up in the thumb scroller, but I scrolled through again and then they all showed.
A little slow/draggy, but I am also on an old computer, looking in a gallery with 298 photos, with music playing during the slideshow. What can I say, I like to press my luck. :D

Ok, caveat. Sent the FFSSS link to my coworker's computer and she got the black screen in FF. Tried it in IE and it says she doesn't have a current enough version of Flash (she has v.9?), and since she does not have administrative privileges, cannot update.
Unfortunately, if we are to be sending our slideshows to clients and/or allowing public viewing, we cannot stipulate that they have a specific version of Flash or IE or FF or whatever, so imho getting the slideshows compatible with multiple versions of software is important.
But, I think we're on the right track! Keep it up. :-)

Will post my stats in the next post.

Mar-27-2008, 10:54 AM
Stats:
1. for FF: Win 9,0,115,0. Debug = no
For IE: Win 9,0,45,0. Debug = yes
2. FF 2.0.0.12, IE 7.0.5730.11, Win XP
3. gallery: http://loribrueseke.smugmug.com/gallery/4494537_SkMvo#264526177
4. Yes
5. Yes
These are my stats here at home on my laptop. Per my previous posts, other computers are getting different results with the same gallery. I do not have stats on those computers. My work computer is pretty old but has been upgraded to run XP. My coworker's computer is less than 6 mos old. I know that's not very specific, but I would figure a newer computer probably has newer versions of software.

Hi Andy,
My first time posting here, and first time doing any smugmug work for quite a while, so I may be in the wrong thread. But here goes...
My problem is not that I can't get the slideshow - but that my galleries default to slideshow - no matter what I set it to. I thought it was something to do with my settings, but then noticed it only happens with one browser. Firefox has the problem, but Safari doesn't. Since I've been away a while, I don't know if this is connected to the recent new slideshow features that Smugmug released. Full screen slideshow works in both browsers.
Here's my stats...
Flash: MAC 9,0,115,0 for both browsers
Browsers: Firefox:2.0.0.13, Safari: 3.1 (5525.13) both on OS.X 10.5
Example Gallery: http://rounsley.smugmug.com/gallery/215150_ZiGLw/1/8294871_v6sF9
I can use both your slideshow links just fine, although the Share link URL only gives a full window slideshow - not a full screen one.
I had previously used quite a bit of customization for a homepage slideshow, but deleted most of it. I dont think I left anything I shouldn't have, but I could easily be wrong on that!
Any suggestions?
thanks
Steve

Do external links have to be enabled for a given gallery in order for the FSSS to work correctly?
Are the FSSS settings tied into the settings used in the Bio section of our account?

No

No
Well, based on our emails this morning I tested everything, including deleting all customization. Finally I turned on external links for the galleries as I had just run out of options.
That is the only thing that enabled the FSSS in Firefox when not logged in to my account.
Any ideas why?

The slideshow was working for a while, although it was next to impossible to get out of it and go back to the Smugmug mode. Now the slideshow doesn't work at all. I see the slideshow screen, but no photos ever appear.

If you are having any difficulties with the slideshow, we want to help, and we'll do it here.
Flash: WIN 9,0,115,0
Firefox: 2.0.0.13
OS: Windows XP SP2
The slideshow does not run on my homepage (www.bena2.smugmug.com (http://www.bena2.smugmug.com)) or as a FSSS in the gallery used by the homepage slideshow, here: http://BenA2.smugmug.com/gallery/1316843_257jV/1/122946895_CJqmQ
The homepage slideshow loads the flash image, then the first slide, but the freezes up. Clearing the cache, then reloading gets only a blank slide.
It also does not work on either of the links you posted. All I get is the "Hit Escape" message, then a black screen.
I do not have any customization code that modifies breadcrumbs. However, I did have the javascript slideshow code for my homepage before the switch to flash. So, maybe I failed to delete something.
Thanks for your help.

For reference see here (http://dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=789050&postcount=503).
Andy, we're making progress. I did as you requested. Cleared the cache [again :D] and tried my gallery. Didn't work. Black screen only. Tried your first suggested gallery. It didn't work either. Black screen only. Tried the 3rd (this one: http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/swfpo...AlbumKey=f3ta9 (http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=2504559&AlbumKey=f3ta9) ) and what do you know?! It worked! I hope this helps track down the problem.

There don't seem to be any posts from Opera users here, so I've registered to add it to the list:
I'm getting a blank screen with no pictures (just the "Press esc to exit" for a start, then nothing)
1. Win 9,0,115,0. Debug = no
2. Opera 9.26, Windows XP

4. No
5. Kind of, but not in full screen mode - the slideshow works in the browser window

Hi I'm so sorry, Opera is not one of our fully supported browsers. They are: IE6, IE7, Firefox and Safari.
That's a real shame. I really like smugmug but I have little enthusiasm for using a different browser just to access one particular feature. Smugmug generally works perfectly well in Opera (aside from a minor issue with the buttons that was easily fixed using a custom CSS), and even the slideshow works fine if I use the direct link to it (from the "share" page) and hit F11 to make it full screen. It's only when I access it from the slideshow button in the gallery that it doesn't work. (That's a point - why does the Slideshow button in the gallery behave differently to the link in the share page?)
I suppose I'll have to wait and see if Opera 9.5 fixes the problem.

You have it turned off with this CSS:
/* removes the full-screen slideshow buttons */
.play_slideshow {
display: none;
}
You can either remove it or just change the display: none; to display: block;
I noticed that the largest size photo in your galleries (based on the couple of non-protected galleries that I looked at) is Large. If you really want the full-screen effect, you may want to consider bumping that up, even to XL.

Yeah, it's because you put this in your CSS:
/* removes the full-screen slideshow buttons */
.play_slideshow {
display: none;
}
remove it, and you'll be fine :)

If you right click and save, what gets save is a file called spacer.gif, not your photo. It's essentially an empty file. Your photos are still protected.
Go ahead and save one, then look at the file.

I'll jump into this as well.
1 - Mac 9, 0, 115, 0
Debug player (Player 6 and higher): No
2 - Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.13) Gecko/20080311 Firefox/2.0.0.13
3 - Here's a link to a gallery:
http://jackchinook.smugmug.com/gallery/3346520_9MXvg#186497354
4 - No - the little pointy hand turns into a little text selector thingy sorta like this "}{" but narrower.
5 - No - I get the "transferring data" message down on the bottom of the browser window, but nothing else happens and no status window displays on the lower right of the browser window.
Thanks for any help!

Ah, sorry, I misunderstood.
I wonder if there is any way to disable the print button in flash.
Of course, anyone can grab any image from the screen by doing an alt-Prnt Scrn and then pasting it in a program and printing it. That's a function enabled by the computer and the operating system, not under our control.

Hi Rene, it's no different than using prt screen on the keyboard, or any sort of screen grabber software (or cmd-shift-4 on a Mac). Watermark your images if you want to protect further. You can also block sizes if you wish.

Win 9, 0,115,0<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
2. We need to know what browser you are using, and the version, and on what Operating System. E.g., IE6 on WinXP; IE7 on Windows Vista Home Premium; Firefox 2.0.0.13 on Mac OS X 10.5.
IE7 on Windows Vista Home Premium<o:p></o:p>
3. We need a direct gallery link to where you are having the problem.
This one will do, but the slide show doesn’t work on any gallery of mine or anyone else’s.<o:p></o:p>

4. Tell us if you can use the Full Screen Slideshow here in this gallery (http://cmac.smugmug.com/gallery/2504559_f3ta9#131481399).
No, my screen goes black, just like when viewing any gallery including my own.<o:p></o:p>
5. Tell us if you can see the Full Screen Slideshow using this share link (http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=2504559&AlbumKey=f3ta9).
No.
Some of you may have all the right stuff but have customizing that is getting in the way of your Full Screen Slideshow:
modifying the breadcrumb with javascript
having the olde javascript slideshow installed still

Not sure that this has helped narrow the field but here we go:
Observed behaviour (IE7)
Mouse over behaviour on "Add Photos", "Themes", "Share Photo" changed colour of button on mouseover event. Not the case on "Slideshow" but onclick the Slideshow button responds opening browser in full screen with the correctly applied theme.
Observed behaviour (Firefox)

Yes, I don't have an answer for you yet on your issue.
On thing you could try please, go to add/remove programs, remove complete your Adobe Flash from your computer, and then go to Adobe and get it anew:

When I run this otherwise great feature I get a progress meter in the middle of the picture almost all the time both on my own galleries and the test ones in your first post of the thread. I can't imagine this is meant to be!
I've got a reasonable (but sometimes a bit up and down) internet connection.
The gallery that I noticed this on: http://wyndhamhollis.smugmug.com/gallery/4614888_8RAMp#272245871
Firefox 2.0.0.13
Flash 9.0.115.0

I see both your test links OK except for the meter which is not present quite as much as the one on my gallery.

Stats:
1. for FF: Win 9,0,115,0. Debug = no
For IE: Win 9,0,45,0. Debug = yes
2. FF 2.0.0.12, IE 7.0.5730.11, Win XP
3. gallery: http://loribrueseke.smugmug.com/gall...kMvo#264526177 (http://loribrueseke.smugmug.com/gallery/4494537_SkMvo#264526177)
4. Yes
As for add-ons, I have:
Better GCal 0.2.2 (for google calendar)
DOM Inspector 1.8.1.13
FlashGot 0.8.8
SmugBrowser 0.5.5 beta
SmuggLr 1.9

I like the smooth new slideshow look and feel. I am unclear though if it is possible to adjust the thumbnails that appear just below the full screen image. I don't have zoom thumbnails created for each print in my gallery, but even for the ones that I have created, those thumbnails don't seem to be selected for use with the full screen slideshow, but rather just a random area of each image, and one that often tells the viewer little about what the full size print is about. How can I adjust those thumbnails shown below the full screen image so that they really provide useful thumbnails instead?

Not sure if this is the right spot or whether its been requested already but any chance there could be an option to turn on captions for the slideshow?
Oh and the actual slideshow quality is spot on! works a treat.
Maybe it could just be a drop down option similar to 'add photo' drop downs.

The progress bar will show at the beginning, while we pre-load some images. Then it'll go away, and the show will run without it.
If you click a thumb, we'll start pre-loading again from that spot, and you'll see the loading indicator.

Hi, you can't adjust 'em but we can. Look for some improvements to the way we make them in the not-too-distant future.

Is it possible to know how many visitors are viewing images via SLIDESHOW versus viewing images by scrolling through thumbs?
With the old SLIDESHOW, I used (rightly or wrongly) the number of "Large" images viewed as a proxy for SLIDESHOW viewers.
It would be very nice to know.
Thanks.

I assume you're asking what happens in FF, since that seems to be more problematic. The slideshow does load, albeit slowly. The progress bar takes about 20 seconds to load, then the first pic shows up while the thumbs load, also slowly. Then I get another progress bar for about 30 seconds while the second picture tries to load.
This is on the home laptop.
Thanks again for your help, Andy. I know we haven't worked out the solution yet, but I appreciate the effort.:clap

I'm so confused.
I just went back to my own gallery - as in, clicked on my home page and navigated to the gallery to play the slideshow - in FF and it IS working. I don't get it... sometimes things work, sometimes they don't. I'm sure you guys just LOVE problems that don't consistently reproduce themselves. :bash
So I went back and re-read all my posts, trying to make sense of what my problems have been so far, and here's what I came up with:
1. Slideshow used to not be clickable in IE, but a couple days later this was fixed, I imagine by something on your end. Been working ever since. :bow
2. It seems only once did I have trouble opening the slideshow in FF, but it now also seems to be working, with or without customization.
3. Things seem to work ok on my home laptop -- and by ok, I mean, it loads and works but sometimes veeerrrry slowly. Problems seem to be when I send the link to others or view on my work computer. Sent the link to 3 different people for either the FFSSSSSFFSS or to the gallery but asked them to click the slideshow button, and have mostly been unsuccessful. Problems include:
- black screen of death
- loading gets frozen
- flash not recent enough version
- absolutely nothing happens
So do these clues point to a customization problem? Some kind of cross-platform cross-version problem? I'm stumped...:scratch

I can see (in Firefox) both the cmac.xxxx... slideshows.
I could see (in firefox went not logged in to my account) the slideshow of the above gallery when I clicked on the slideshow button. However, that is because External Links for that gallery was turned on.
I turned off the external links, cleared Firefox's cache, and reloaded that gallery. Clicking the slideshow button now gives me a black screen.

I don't know if this is related or not, so I'll mention it just in case. Often times I'll go into my page via my custom name (capturedimaginings.com) and go to share an image. I hit the copy button. Hi Lori,
Our engineers are busy tweaking a few things in the slideshow that may very well resolve your problems with it. It's working for almost everyone; there are a few corner cases where it is not. That release will go live soon (this week, hopefully) (barring any catastrophes!).
We are very sorry for the inconvenience. We are not giving up! We hope the second release of fixes will take care of your problems. Thank you in advance for your patience.

1) don't use AOL's browser, use real Internet Explorer on your computer.

No, it means that people on AOL using AOLs terrible browser *might* have issues.
We support fully, IE6, IE7, Firefox and Safari.
AOL does things to their browser that shouldn't be spoken about in gentle company.

IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_qfe.070227-2300
Problem: Error message - this site requires adobe flash 9. To upgrade, click here. (click) Error: adobe flash 9 has previously been installed with elevated privileges. You do not have administrative privileges to upgrade.
Same problems exist whether direct link to slideshow, or going to gallery first and then clicking slideshow. Also same problems when viewing the gallery without customization.
Hope that helps~

Problem: Error message - this site requires adobe flash 9. To upgrade, click here. (click) Error: adobe flash 9 has previously been installed with elevated privileges. You do not have administrative privileges to upgrade.
Same problems exist whether direct link to slideshow, or going to gallery first and then clicking slideshow. Also same problems when viewing the gallery without customization.
Hope that helps~
There are going to be computers where they need to update flash - this is one of them. But her work is blocking it. I don't have a good answer for you on this one, I'm very sorry :(

I see what you mean because when my connection speeds up the bar isn't around for so long but for the benefit of us folks in the sticks maybe the progress bar could be moved to the bottom or side so at least you can view the current picture while the others load. Thanks for your response, by the way.

Some of you may have all the right stuff but have customizing that is getting in the way of your Full Screen Slideshow:
modifying the breadcrumb with javascript
having the olde javascript slideshow installed still
Looking for Shizam's Homepage Slideshow? Right Here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=73247).
1. Adobe says "MAC, 9,0,115,0"
2. Safari 3.1, Mac OSX 10.5.2
3. http://www.knappimaging.com/gallery/4120390_CjtoK
4. No - the button won't even "click" - the cursor never changes when I float over the button
5. No, it never loads the page
As to your last note, what do you mean by the "olde javascript slideshow"? Is that what is currently running on my main page - the "olde" slideshow?

Fixing the Black Screen of Death
I scanned the thread and didn't see this solution listed, but forgive me if I missed it and it's 205.
When clicking on the full screen slideshows, I was just getting a blank (black) screen. It would never progress beyond this, no matter how long I left it. Curiously, I noticed the same thing happened when attempting to view YouTube in full screen. Up-to-date releases of Firefox and Flash running on Vista. It actually started happening after the last Flash update.
After some google-fu, it appeared that others with this black screen issue had solved it by turning Hardware Acceleration off. The problem is that this menu is accessed with a right-click, which wasn't available (gray'd out) from the SmugMug slideshow (and youtube full screen).
To access the Adobe Flash Player menu successfully, go to youtube and click on any video. From the small screen, right-click --> Settings --> Display Menu --> UNCHECK HARDWARE ACCELERATION, and then click Close.
Close out your tabs/windows, re-open, and voile. The new slideshow works a treat! :clap
Hope this helps others who've been stumped by the black screen of death. :thumb

Hmmm...So Hardware Acceleration turned off fixed the black screen problem. Unfortunately, this will vary from machine to machine. Is there a way to programatically determine if it's turned on and warn the user? Or is there something that Smug can put on the blank screen (like the press ESC message - or maybe along with it) that suggests if the slideshow does not start, check to see if hardware acceleration is turned off????
If we can proactively head this off, we can avoid an email (at best) or someone just leaving our site because it doesn't work for them.

- Gary. You really can't electronically reach out to the visitor who may be having a hardware acceleration issue. We've had zillions of slideshow uses, but only a tiny handful (less than a dozen) reports of people that can't view.
There's no memory issue with the Full Screen slideshow, and on the homepage slideshow, we've only seen 1 or 2 cases of this, and they've been due to embed-code errors.

Packmule - Thanks for the tip on turning hardware acceleration off to make the slideshow work!!! I have been following this thread every day hoping someone would figure out the problem. (I posted a few days after the release) Smugmug should send you some $$$ because they have probably spent hundreds of hours trying to figure it out with no success.

My experience has been much different. I have tried the full page slideshow on the gallery pages on 5 machines and it has had this problem on 3. I also have heard from friends and family that I send gallery links to that the slideshow does not work. I think there are some compatibility issues that need to be addressed.

Shizam actually posted this on March 18th:
http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=781595&postcount=286
but for most of the few folks with issues, it didn't seem to solve the problem. And since it's not something we can reach out to viewers' computers and do for them, we haven't been putting much stock in this... it's sort of a 'last resort' thing, and we have been trying it at times with folks. We are happy the idea resurfaced though!

:lol3 Nah, the great service that SmugMug, Dgrin, and ADVrider provide is all that I need. I'm glad I was able to contribute in some small way.
That post by Shizam explains things well, but no one cross-posted it to this thread (and I never saw the other). One problem with that explanation, at least for me, was that that menu selection is not actually available if you're experiencing the black screen. :doh The missing link was going to a non-fullscreen flash (like YouTube) to get the required menu access.
Anyway, glad some other folks are now enjoying the full screen goodness. :barb

Hi Andy,
Unfortunately, I tried the unchecking the acceleration box on Adobe Flash and it did NOT make a difference on my machine. For the fullscreen slideshow I still have the full black screen after the "Press the Esc message" goes away, and the Style:Slideshow results in an empty area where the pictures should appear.
In answer to your technical questions...
1. WIN 9,0,115,0
2. Firefox 2.0.0.13

Working out some kinks ... hang tight.Barb, in case you are interested - things have changed slightly from the previous.
When I first click on the FSSS button I get nothing. Pressing ESC and the the button again I will see the border for the thumbnails with the slow/medium/fast, the Hide Captions, and the Return to Gallery links. This will autohide and appear based on the mouse movement as expected. Other than that, though, there is not much else.

Yesterday, I was all excited because it was working once I turned off the hardware xl button, but today, when I went to turn it on to all my galleries, the Press Esc screen problem came back. I haven't even rebooted my PC since then.
It works fine on Firefox, but not on IE6.
Symptoms:
Black screen, Press Esc message appears then disappears leaving screen black forever.
I hit escape, then reenter the slide show
The white thumbnail box shows up (at the top of the screen), but has no images in it...rest of screen is blank.

Love that the full screen slideshow is now showing captions. But it's not showing the entire caption - at least not most of the time. The captions are sometimes cut off after the first line; sometimes in the middle of a line; and sometimes several lines of the caption are visible.
There does not seem to be any problem with the captions if I use the drop down to switch to slideshow mode.
Any thoughts!

:clap I like the new full screen slide show! ...and it's working great on my system! Thank you.
Of course, when someone does something great, it invites requests for more.
1) it would be nice if there were some "slideshow default settings" that could be specified in the gallery configuration. I would like to determine, for my users, what the "show/hide caption", "speed", etc. is when a user activates the slideshow on a particular gallery. The user could change them from the default, but the default would be the settings upon starting the SLIDESHOW.
2) it would be nice if a slideshow link would bring the slideshow up in full screen mode and not within a window within an application. This may not be possible. Also, it would be nice to be able to specify the default settings for the slideshow within the link coding.
Just some thoughts.
Thanks again for the great work on the new full screen slideshow.

Andy/Barb/Sam: After clearing the cache I am noticing that the first slide in the FSSS accessed through via a direct link (as in #5 in the first post) is showing up as a thumbnail-sized image and not as a full-sized image (so far I have tested in Firefox 2.0.0.13) All other images in the slideshow are full-sized. Sometimes this happens even without clearing the cache.
After the show transitions to the next image then, if you click on the first image's actual thumbnail, it will show full-size. I have seen this using the link for #5 in post #1 of this thread and for my galleries.

Same thing happens for my slideshow. First pic shows as whatever size it is on the page I access the slideshow from. Then the rest are fullscreen. If I let the slideshow "go around", the first pic is fullscreen on the next run through.
Remember that the slideshow tailors the image size for your monitor -- it takes a bit to calculate this, especially if you aren't able to use hardware acceleration. I think we're just seeing that "lag".

This is as designed. The very first image is a standard size, L, XL, X2, X3, depending on your monitor size & resolution.
The tiny thumbnail is an obscure issue, that Shizam is trying to chase down. Doesn't happen that much but it's happened.

I like everything about the new slideshows with two exceptions.
1. It takes way too long for the images to load. I have experienced problems on multiple computers at different locations with cable and DSL connections.
2. I wish that annoying little bar didnt appear showing the progress of the upload. Due to the slow uploads, it is almost always there and I rarely see images without the bar there.

I'm really sorry - almost everyone we talk to raves about how much faster it is than the old slideshow. Remember, you are feeding huge images. Perhaps we can help with diagnosing your speed to SmugMug, send and email to our Support Heroes and we'll have you do some diagnostics.

Not for the Full Screen slideshow, sorry :(
Never? I assume, under the covers you're calling roughly the same calls the other SS had in it (Flash parameters are Flash parameters)...so why not let us set some variables in our customization that will be used for all slideshows and, additionally, allow us to override them by gallery? That can't be difficult to do...
or even create a class to contain the parameter collection?
I'd bet you could allow us to set it in our CSS section if you thought about it: .gallery_123456 .ss_fadespeed = 100 ?????

This is as designed. The very first image is a standard size, L, XL, X2, X3, depending on your monitor size & resolution.
So the first picture or two will always be smaller? This seems odd and looks like a bug.
It would be nice if the slideshow remembered the status of the "comments on/off" and "slow, medium, fast" settings.

Sounds like a full-screen issue -which is likely graphics or machine related.
Can you see this full screen version of this (click the little icon to the right of the movie)
http://staging.mutoid.nl/fullscreen/index_cars.html
If NOT, go back to SmugMug, hit Full Screen button, and then right click in the black area - turn Hardware Acceleration OFF. Let us know?

The first photo will always start at a standard size (L, XL, X2, X3) depending on the size of your monitor. If you loop around, the first image will be full screen. If you play the show for the first several photos, then click #2 in the thumbs bar, it will be full size. This has to do with loading a massive amount of photos and data and still giving you, the viewer, something to look at very fast :)
We'll look at somehow saving viewer prefs re: slow, med, fast and captions on/off. Can't say if/when but it's on Shizam's list to look at! Thanks :D

When I click on the "cars" link, and then on the little icon, I get a large (tho not full screen STILL image. The sound continues, but no "movie."
When I go back to SmugMug and click on the Slideshow button, then right click, click on settings, a little screen does come up with a toggle button that refers to Hardware Accelleration, but it's not active. I cant click on it. Right clicking in the black area sometimes brings up what seems to be the filmstrip, but nothng actually happens. Sorry, I'm not very literate when it comes to real technical computer stuff like Flash.
One trouble is that the same thing does not happen every time I click on Slideshow.

All right . . . what did you do? Now it's working, apparently in all my galleries. Believe me, I've been following this thread for weeks trying to make this thing work without adding to your workload. I have no idea whether YOU did something or I did. Whatever. All this stuff fits neatly into my "incomprehensible wonderment" box. Mille grazie!

It seems that two pages back my question was brought up - is it possible to change the default speed on the FSSS - and it seems that it is not yet. I'd also request this featue, if at all possible.
Andy, do you think this is something that can be given for user control in the (near) future? I'd like to make the default speed on all (or at least most) of my slideshows fast.

Do photos viewed in the FSSS register under gallery statistics? Because someone just looked my an entire gallery of mine, clicking slideshow on the first photo, and the only hits I see on the gallery are thumbnail views and one XLarge (presumably that first photo before the slideshow button was pressed).

Hi
On my web site Samsplace I protected all galleries. My slide show gallery is protected when the gallery is displayed. This gallery is only visable as a slideshow.
If I were to right clik the slideshow picture, I can print this picture on my printer which defeats the protected feature of this gallery as well as other information.
How can I protect people from coying the photos in my slide show? What changes do I have to make to the software?

Hi Gil, can't do it in flash. They can already do the exact same thing with any freely available screen-grabbing utility. So either don't worry about it, or, watermark your images (a pro feature on SmugMug).
I love the new full-screen slideshow ... but mainly for the full-screen aspect of it. I don't like the automatic advance; I'd rather go to the next or previous photos manually. I can do this by hitting Pause and then using the mouse to click on the Previous and Next arrows, but that overlays the arrows, the play/pause button, and the filmstrip over my photo; I have to wait a few seconds for them to go away again.
Simple solution (I hope):
Can we have keyboard control in the slideshow? Right arrow for next, left arrow for previous? Then I could hit pause and control navigation with the arrow keys. (Even better: allow me to choose "paused" as the default "speed.")

Sorry, it's not allowed by Adobe.D'oh! You're right! For anyone else that's interested, this is explained here:

I apologize if this has already been posted but looking at the slideshow of a poster here (moonriver), I tried the right click, it worked (did not show the print option like in my slideshow), instead, when going to the photoeditor, the image was just a dot. How do you do that?
I think I have been told it is called a "box". I would like to learn that, much better than a watermark (hate them).

Hi,that's right-click protection on SmugMug, it's a power or pro feature.
But please, do not ever feel that this is stronger than a watermark - it's actually weaker! Anyone can fish a file out of browser cache - a good, proper watermark will protect you, always.
Make sense?

makes sense for people who know how to do it (I don't). But if the watermark is not on the center of the picture, people can crop it out. On the center, it kinds of ruins the viewing experience...
It is not exactly rightclick (I see how to do this in the gallery setting), it is more like capturing the screen but having nothing in the clopboard.
Going camping in the desert so can't check these out right now, but would love to learn more.

I've seen several "bits and pieces" in this tread and elsewhere (forgive me if I didn't find "The Complete Slideshow Help" screen somewhere on Dgrin or in SmugMug's improving help screen offerings), so I just sent the following to my sister-in-law as a "training guide" of sorts to help her get the full benefit the new slideshow offers:
The fulscreen slideshow on SmugMug just gets better and better! Try this:
Launch the SLIDESHOW from the link next to the SHARE button.
You can sit back and let the slideshow run automatically on it's own...or you can apply a number of optional control overrides:
You can adjust the speed by selecting FAST, MEDIUM (the default), or SLOW in the upper left corner of the thumbnail film strip.
You can jump to any individual image by left-clicking its thumbnail in the filmstrip.
You can jump a full "page" forward or backward by clicking the tiny little arrows at the ends of the thumbnail film strip.
You can left-click the LARGE "Advance-One-Image" or "Go-Back-One-Image" arrows at the sides of the display.
You can Pause the show by moving your mouse to the center of the picture and hit the double-bar "pause" control that pops up there.
You can return to Play mode by moving your mouse to the center of the picture and hit the big triangle pointing to the right.
You can Hide Captions (or Show Captions) by left-clicking the control in the middle of the thumbnail filmstrip. Here's a "feature" I found (by accident) that I really like...especially when there are lots of captions or pictures of signs (e.g. historical markers) with lots of text, and I want to take my time and set my own pace rather than let the slideshow decide how long to leave an image on the screen before moving on to the next one :
Just after the slideshow starts, left click the PAUSE control. This effectively puts the slideshow in "manual mode."
Position the mouse over the LARGE "Advance-One-Image" arrow on the right side of the display in the middle.
Left-click the mouse to manually advance to the next image...it will stay there for as long as you want to see it.
Left-click the mouse again to manually advance to the next image, and so on until you're done, or return to PLAY mode as described earlier.I found that I could even sit back a few feet from my monitor with my wireless mouse and manually advance through the slide show, varying my pace throughout the show as rapidly, or as slowly as I chose at any given moment.
This, I think, will be the way I choose to view my galleries more often than not.

Has anyone else noticed that new photos do not appear in the slideshow until the page is reloaded?
I am thinking of using the slideshow at a party so I can update the slideshow with pictures as the party progresses; however, it looks like I will need to periodically reload the slide show to see new pictures.
Any ideas on how this would work automaticly?

Some of you may have all the right stuff but have customizing that is getting in the way of your Full Screen Slideshow:
modifying the breadcrumb with javascript
Is your breadcrumb navigation javascript creating problems with new full screen slide show? Mine was ... here's the javascript I was given from support that works with new slide show and changes breadcrumb navigation to start with name.smugmug.com/galleries rather than the home page. For example, I don't want breadcrumb navigation to link back to my home page that now has the shizam slide show, but to my galleries page at name.smugmug.com/galleries.
var objElement = document.getElementById("breadcrumb")
if (objElement != null) {
var str = new String(objElement.innerHTML);
str = str.replace('>Home<', '><a href="/galleries">Galleries</a><');
objElement.innerHTML = str;
}
Replace "Home" in above with the text of the initial breadcrumb. For example, mine was Home>next1>next2. Yours might be your first name as I believe that is the default.

Hi SmugMug guys!
Just a quick question: are you planning to make videos viewable right in the full screen slideshow, just as it is with lightbox?
Right now the slideshow just shows a static frame from a movie, so in order to show people my photos and videos, instead of playing that cool slideshow I have to use stepping through photos in lightbox, which gracefully plays all videos it encounters.

6. If you can see #5 and cannot see #4, can you see this (http://staging.mutoid.nl/fullscreen/index_cars.html)? (click the little icon to the right of the movie)
or you can do Adobe's Full Screen test here (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/features/experience/).

7. I already have hardware acceleration disabled
Now what do I do?

This is default Firefox shipping with Ubuntu which is a linux distribution. There is no problem actually clicking the button. It just happens to look like what is complete redaction. This only happens under the white theme and with Firefox on Linux. I haven't changed anything but the banner thus far and turning things off/on via css as i'm new to smugmug; however it works fine in Safari on an OSX machine.

I'm getting a black screen forever after I try to enter a slide show.
I can't see the first link as a slide show using firefox. But if I use my extension to tell firefox to render it using the ie7 engine, it works fine.
So????
I cleared the ff cache, but that didn't work. I don't want to clear all my cookies, how can I clean only the smug ones.

Looking thru the threads, I have the same problems and the same test results as BobNC...except my flash version is 115.

[quote=Andy]Hi Folks!
I am using IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227_2254
3. We need a direct gallery link to where you are having the problem.
Here you go: http://tpower.smugmug.com/gallery/5178505_iTANk/1/313832756_Ko7rk (http://tpower.smugmug.com/gallery/5178505_iTANk/1/313832756_Ko7rk)
4. Tell us if you can use the Full Screen Slideshow here in this gallery (http://cmac.smugmug.com/gallery/2504559_f3ta9#131481399).
Originally, yes, but now, no.
5. Tell us if you can see the Full Screen Slideshow using this share link (http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=2504559&AlbumKey=f3ta9).
Originally, yes, but now, no.
6. If you can see #5 and cannot see #4, can you see this (http://staging.mutoid.nl/fullscreen/index_cars.html)? (click the little icon to the right of the movie)
Yes
or you can do Adobe's Full Screen test here (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/features/experience/).
(click the full screen mode on the left, then let the demo load, then click full screen view button on the movie).
This works fine.
My original problem was that the subject slideshow would hang on the same image (143_Fenway_fix), and this occurred multiple times. Then, on one of my tries, it got past that just fine, but when I went to another gallery it just went to black when I tried to do the slide show. I have just now tried again, and everything seems to be working - except I still cannot see your test gallery slideshows. Any insights?
'preciate the help in advance - Thanks!

Andy,
Are you gone?
Jbee, I saw earlier where you were having a similar problem to mine. I found that an addon to FF, "Adblock Plus" was causing the slideshow to fail. Disabling Adblock did NOT fix the problem. Uninstalling the addon DID fix the problem, and I'm now getting beautiful fullscreen slideshows in FF 3.

1. We need to know your installed flash version, for IE (if you use it) and for other browsers. Go to this page at Adobe (http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_15507) and tell us the results.

FF3, WinXP SP3
3. We need a direct gallery link to where you are having the problem.

4. Tell us if you can use the Full Screen Slideshow here in this gallery (http://cmac.smugmug.com/gallery/2504559_f3ta9#131481399).
yes
5. Tell us if you can see the Full Screen Slideshow using this share link (http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/swfpopup.mg?AlbumID=2504559&AlbumKey=f3ta9).
I get the progress bar, then nothing
(click the full screen mode on the left, then let the demo load, then click full screen view button on the movie).
worked fine
Some of you may have all the right stuff but have customizing that is getting in the way of your Full Screen Slideshow:
modifying the breadcrumb with javascript
having the olde javascript slideshow installed stillAny customizations I have, the video worked fine - just noticed lately it isnt working...FF3 maybe.
Installed - no change
Turned off HARDWARE ACCELERATION - no change.

Can you take a slide show from another site like photobucket and post it in the bio section of your smug mug page.
The reason I ask is because I want to make a slideshow tht randomly shows all of my photos without having a gallery that my customers can see.

Hello,
recently I've made the slideshow for my home page. Everything works fine besides one thing. More precisely, how can I CENTER my slideshow? I've already made the navbar and banner and they look cool, everything is straight and centered, apart from the slideshow. Besides how can I put it a bit higher and change its position on the homepage?
Here is my website: http://artderien.smugmug.com/
Thanks in advance for you help.

You have it in the right place and the border is showing on the slides.
However the show doesn't run here with the splash you have in there.
Check and make sure its gallery has external links on and photo is not
checked "hide".
This splash photo link shows nothing.
http://ArtdeRien.smugmug.com/photos/331036972_TxYzB-S.jpg
Using WebDev I removed the splash from the generated flash object code
and it ran. So code is good except for the splash photo.
Add this to CSS to center the show.
#userBio {text-align: center;}

Thanks Allen, it works, the slideshow is now perfectly centered :) Concerning my splash, I just accidentally removed the photo from my gallery and thus the link showed nothing. I uploaded it again and it works properly.

After living for a while without the slideshow, I realize now that uninstalling Adblock Plus (not merely disabling) was causing the black screen on both my desktop and laptop Firefox browser.
As I consider Adblock Plus a must have add-on, I have to ask: Will there ever be a fix to this?
Thanks,

Thanks for the feature request!
I would like to "second the motion." It would be great to be able to change the default display speed for the full-screen slideshow. And I have listed some more suggestions below.
This feature would match up very well with my application. On my fundraising website, I publish monthly "Photo Essays" where the caption text is much more imoprtant than the photos. I use the photos to illustrate the text, rather than using the text to explain the photos.
Changing the default speed to "slow" would encourage my viewers to actually read the captions. Forcing this option would be even better (removing the "slow/medium/fast" options). It would also be great to be able to force display of the captions (remove the "Hide Captions" option).
For my monthly photo essay, I used to use a product called JetPhoto Server hosted on my site, but now that SmugMug allows me to force the "Journal" gallery style, I've decided to switch over to SmugMug. Users with broadband can switch to slideshow view.
Here are the pertinent links:
http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/5438188_YTvZQ/1
http://www.missionarycopelandfamily.org/photo-essays
(BTW, comments on the photo essays themselves would be welcome... of course, that discussion doesn't belong in this thread... but after I publish the July essay, which is the first one to use SmugMug, maybe I'll set up a thread for critiques. In the meantime, I welcome personal messages through DGrin.)
Thanks for all the great works guys.

I am seeing a problem with word wrap on the captions in FSSS view. The following links will illustrate with one particular photo. I have tried several times to delete and replace the offending captions (using copy and paste or sometimes retyping the captions from scratch). Sometimes this works right away, sometimes it works after several minutes, and sometimes it doesn't seem to work no matter how many times I repeat the procedure. But I'm not sure how the problem originated to begin with--was there a problem with the way I first entered the caption itself, or is this purely a word wrap parsing issue?
The most serious problem is that the last line of the caption gets cut off below the bottom of the display area (i.e., it's not displayed at all). These captions are really important to my application, so this issue is important to me.

Sorry!
Known bug, will be fixed.
Sorry!
That's good news! Will I need to do anything to the offending captions, or will they be re-parsed automatically?
BTW, as I was working on this, it reminded me of similar experiences with the PDF maker inside Photoshop Elements. The same thing used to happen there. And in other apps where font mapping is an issue. I think similar display issues can happen when printing in Excel 2003 under certain circumstances. What a hassle.
Glad to know that we're on track to have the problem corrected.

Hi Rene, it's no different than using prt screen on the keyboard, or any sort of screen grabber software (or cmd-shift-4 on a Mac). Watermark your images if you want to protect further. You can also block sizes if you wish.
Hi Andy,
A bit of a late response to an old post, but I just embedded a slideshow on an external site and noticed the print on right-click option and really hope there is something more that you can (or Shizam) can do. While I agree watermarking is the only way to really protect your photos, as previously mentioned most people do not know how to print-screen or even that the option exists whereas most, if not all, people know how to right-click and hit print. I'm providing a client with a slideshow for their website as part of a package they purchased and I implore you to understand that this is a fairly big "security" issue.
If this physically cannot be patched in anyway, I understand. But I right-click protect the photos in my gallery for a reason (because that's as fair as a casual copyright-ignorer is willing to go) and hope that I can continue the protection in Flash, where I would typically imagine my photos are more secure as no URLs can be ascertained.
Thanks a bunch.

Hi Andy,
Scott it's being looked at by us (Shizam).
But really, why worry, IMO? The images are low res. Watermark your photos if you're really, really concerned. WHY? Because there's tons of screen capture software out there one click away on Google.
Also, the quality of image that can be obtained by that method is very poor:
http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=837318&postcount=2742 .
I would like to "second the motion." It would be great to be able to change the default display speed for the full-screen slideshow.
Not sure about the forum etiquette of replying to myself... I spose it's not a problem.
Anyway, I want to add something to this thread: I've had some viewers take a look at the draft version of my first SmugMug slideshow photo essay. Every viewer gave the same feedback:
* They didn't realize they could pause the slideshow.
* They didn't realize the "slow" option was available.
* They found it VERY annoying that they couldn't read the captions because the slideshow was running too fast.
For now, my workaround is to give instructions to the user in the first slide. But that's really lame, guys. Let's fix this, and we'll have an excellent new feature that many will use. (Others, of course, will want to be able to customize their view speeds/options with other settings... this just happens to be my case.)
Here's the draft slideshow in question. Try it and see what you think:

Andy,
As you know I have worked with you and the help desk for quite a while but have been unable to get slideshow working. I am waiting on the helpdesk and developer to get back to me for the next step. To refresh you:
I have all the right answers to the regular questions (correct version of flash, etc. and it fails in both FFF and IE 7. Also Flash works on every other web site I visit except SM, and it fails on my laptop but not my wifes.
The slideshow button does nothing when I click on it. If I choose the slideshow them then it give me the black screen with the forward, play and back arrows but nothing wlse (it thinks it loaded)
I went to your web site this morning and the slideshow on your Bryce and Zion gallery works (but still fails on my website). What is different about your site that would make slideshow work while failing on 99% of the others.
I am still waiting on feedback from Rich at the helpdesk but I am hoping that this symptom of working on your website (and I have found at least one other) will jog someones memory.
Thanks

Just noticed another thing that's really annoying. You can't get rid of the
thumbs and see the whole photo without waiting some time. Then moving
mouse to click next you have to wait another long time for the thumbs to
disappear and see the whole photo.
I personally find the thumbs totally useless and would like an option to turn
them off or at least put a toggle on/off at the top.:D

Slideshow Problem, pls help. I am waiting for support to answer, but maybe someone here can help as well.
Similiar issue as the poster above. Some thumbnails in the filmstrip show some don't. It looks like this: http://real-life-photography.smugmug.com/photos/340352099_dxEeZ-M.jpg
Other galleries have only the first thumb.
1) Player Version: WIN 9,0,124,0 -> stupid me updated to the latest version. It worked before (version unknown). However, friends had the same issue (can only see first thumb and pic) and I tried to figure it out myself. Not a smart idea :cry
2) Win XP Home Edition 2002 SP2. Firefox 2.0.0.16
3) all my galleries: http://www.real-life-photography.com/Client%20Area/565863
galleries are PW protected: *** pw removed by me ***
4+5) both of these slideshows work perfectly fine. Hope the issue is due to my customisation I basically copy-paste out of the smugmug help.
6) I am on broadband, but have some lags with the car ad. The "adobe full-sceen mode" loaded and then stayed about 30 sec in buffering (black screen) after that it worked perfectly.
7) I disabled hardware acceleration on my player. same issue
8) I cleared all my private data in firefox and re-started the PC. still same issue.
If anyone can help, pls let me know! I just started to customise my page and the possibilities seem really fantastic. However, if I and potential customers can't use the slideshow, that would be very sad. 3 out of 4 friends could not see the slideshow, same issue :dunno hope it is just in my customisation ...

Hmmm... If it's true that there's an issue with custom domains combined with password-protected galleries, could SmugMug change it's internal link generation routine to use my username.smugmug.com link rather than the custom domain link?
I understand that I might have to use the username.smugmug.com domain if I'm emailing out a link myself, but it seems SmugMug's own code could take this issue into account until it's properly fixed. Otherwise I'm left with a custom domain of quite diminished value.
Thanks. Hope this can be rectified one way or another. :thumb

No problem here. I have many new flash shows running in a gallery
description of a passworded gallery using a another passworded gallery as
the source. This runs using my domain or nickname. Only grip I have is the
show asks for the same password to run.

I got Firefox to work by disabling Adblock Plus (not a viable solution in my opinion), but can't get over the hump with Safari on two separate machines (both MacBook Pro's)
What am I missing?
Thanks

Hi,
I was wondering if there's a way to get the slideshow to show up on the non-primary monitor?
Even if I have the browser window in my second monitor the slide show runs on my primary monitor.
OS: Windows Server 2008 Standard
Thanks

That's a tough one because it depends on your graphics card most likely. I know with NVIDIA that you can change the primary monitor that individual applications run on using the nView settings.

Some of you may have all the right stuff but have customizing that is getting in the way of your Full Screen Slideshow:
modifying the breadcrumb with javascript
having the olde javascript slideshow installed stillLooking for Shizam's Homepage Slideshow? Right Here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=73247).
EDIT (April 9th, 2008): We updated the site to support the latest Adobe Flash version (9,0,124,0) (http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash). You DO NOT require this version but if you have it or get it, you'll be fine. :)
Slideshow in my galleries does not work. Answers...
1. WIN 9,0,115,0
2. Firefox 3.0 on XP Pro (IE 7.0 works fine on this system)
3. Gallery link: http://dbe.smugmug.com/gallery/3291037_sAPWp/1/184805062_dBFgW
Or, using my domain: http://www.davidenglundphotography.com/gallery/3291037_sAPWp/1/184805062_dBFgW
Neither one works for Slide show (though the slideshow on my home page works - see http://www.davidenglundphotography.com)
4. No
5. No
6. Yes, and Yes
7. Tried it, no difference
Don't know if I have any custom stuff interfering. It wasn't a few weeks ago. Can you tell if there is? I'm mystified. Why would it work in IE 7.x but not in Firefox 3.x?
NOTE: I too can get it working if I disable Adblock Plus. Is this the bug referred to above that's being fixed?

1. Flash version 9,0,124,0. Hardware acceleration is turned off in the Flash settings. On or off still results in a black screen.
2. Firefox 3.0.1, both Windows XP SP2, and Mac OSX 10.5.4 (same version of Flash on both systems too)
3. http://darkwolf777.smugmug.com/gallery/5742706_QXKVU/1/354796255_ZmwLk
4. No slideshow, black screen
5. Black screen again.
6. The "Cars" video plays fine, even switching to full screen works fine. And the full screen demo on Adobe's page works fine.
I can't see any slideshows, whether full screen, or switching the gallery layout to "Slideshow" and having it contained in a smaller window.
If I try it in Safari, it plays just fine (on both Windows and OSX). And if I try it in IE7 (on Windows) it works fine as well. However, on IE7 there's still a title bar for the window that should be hidden when full screen... and it doesn't start playing the slideshow until after you cancel a prompt to locate the Flash 9 debugger.
I'm wondering if Safari is just ignoring that message outright, and if Firefox is simply getting hung up on it, but because the screen is blacked out you can't actually see the message in order to cancel it?
I do have AdBlock Plus on Firefox, but I've also tried disabling it to test the slideshow, and had the same result.
[edit] I just disabled AdBlock Plus through the Tools>Add-ons menu, and after restarting Firefox, the slideshow does work. Having the extension enabled in the add-ons, but using it's drop down button to uncheck "Enable AdBlock Plus" is what I tried before, and no joy. So with the filters disabled, it still interferes with the slideshow. The entire extension needs to be disabled for it to work.

Hi:
Slide show wasn't working for me on my (XP using Firefox). Worked fine with IE06.
1. Flash 9.0.124.0
2. Firefox 3.0.1 on XP
3. All of my galleries here http://laycock.smugmug.com
4. no
5. no
6. Your link for the Cars video seems to be getting redirected to a "Buy this Domain" kind of site... but the Adobe full screen test worked
Anyways, disabling AdBlockPlus on my gallery url fixed the problem. I had the same issue on Firefox on my Mac (Leopard) and same fix worked. Nothing on my gallery was actively being blocked by ABP but disabling it fixed the problem.
Just thought I'd share that in case it helps anyone.

EDIT (August 31, 2008): Adblock Plus and Firefox3 aren't playing well with FS Slideshow and Flash. Sorry :( We're trying to work on this and overcome the issue with Adblock plus, updates when we have them....
I have taken the Adobe test--everything OK. Questions 4 and 5 worked fine--NO problem seeing other's fullscreen slideshows. I have IE 7, Windows XP, all the latest flash stuff installed. Fullscreen slideshow was working fine a few days ago but just...quit.
When Fullscreen is clicked, the big black screen shows, and the thumbs slideshow is "trying" to work. Am I one of those with "the olde javascript slideshow installed still? If so, how would I know that, and how does it get corrected? OR, have I screwed up customization?
Also, if and when fullscreen is fixed, how do I get the thumbs from appearing above the pics--it cuts off the top of the pictures unless I make them smaller--then, if I do that, they are not big enough if viewed in the gallery style slidewhow? OR better yet, can the thumbs be completely disabled?
Thanks much, DeeRich

:thumb
:barbThank you so much, I've been trying everything and your simple fix did the trick for me. 1000 bows to you.

How can I just get started with slide show customization. Lots of forum talk of how to do this and that, how cool the slide show is. Where to just start ? Can't be found.
Everything has a wrinkle to it that assumes too much. NOT how to have slideshow on BIO, just how to have slide show. Please.
All instructions comments, threads forget to say where to get, where to just get started.
Which slideshow is which : what's a shizam slideshow, what's a full screen slideshow, what's flash based slideshow ? Someone somewhere, please, make these things clear.
Would like to get started with slide show customizing, I think full screen with some tweaks, but can't even begin without some knowledge of the simplest terms.
What is the term for the slideshow style that has the large arrows (triangles) on either side of the photo, with large "pause" button in middle of photo ?
I always give these problems a couple of hours of hunting through the forums, threads, tutorials before asking. Always the same problem : guessing what magic words will bring up an answer, then : answers in tutorials or forums assume too much - leaving out the essential getting started info, OR : jump to some extra added tweak of the issue. You finally find some information on "slideshow" but it's how to have slideshow button flash in morse code on your toaster instead of your computer screen."
I wanted to mess around with a few tweaks of a slide show but just how to even get to the simplest , how to begin, where to download what, where to get the starter code would do for now.

I see the announcements about the new slideshow, and I see the sticky about what info we need to give to have you troubleshoot our bugs, but I can;t even find the basic instructions on how to START. Is there a link somewhere that gives the inital instructions or are we supposed to guess?

Hello, hopefully someone can help me. I have been trying to customize my site and have been going through all the posts here trying to find solutions and it has been really helpful so far. I got the slideshow working and the nav bar while I was working in IE. Now I'm looking at my home page in Safari and the slideshow is too far up and covers up the nav bar. However, when I look at it in IE, everything looks fine. Please let me know if there's a solution to this problem that I'm not seeing because I don't want to go any further with spending the time building this site if it's going to look really bad in some browsers.
Thanks in advance for any help.:bash :bash :bash :bash

I'm using the full screen slideshow and randomly some photos look terrible! They look fuzzy and muddled and just very poor quality in the slideshow. Those photos look fine in the gallery. I uploaded the photos to a separate gallery and ran through the photos one by one in both galleries side by side - gallery photos look fine and sharp. Ran the slideshow for each gallery - same set of photos, some photos affected in full screen slideshow (~20% of photos), and different ones affected in one gallery vs. another.
I'm using firefox 2.0.0.17
This is not good.

Your slideshow doesn't work for me on either IE7 or Firefox 3.
I believe at least part of the problem is your splash image. When I use just that URL, I get a file not found error. Is the URL for your splash correct? Is that photo in a gallery that is not password-protected and that allows external links?
Also - you are using an old version of the slideshow code. I believe that should still work, but you might want to change to the current (and simpler) code. See http://wiki.smugmug.net/display/SmugMug/Flash+Slideshow.

Hello,
I like the slideshow function built-in Smugmug galleries. However the link to the Slideshow that is provided under GetLink only starts a Full Window Slideshow rather than a Full Screen one like when clicking on the Slideshow button present on the Gallery page. Is there any way to accomplish one of the following functions?
1) Custom link that would start a true full screen slideshow
or
2) Embbeded html code that would only display a big Start Slideshow button (in a blog for example)
Thank you
Alphazo
