I did, and I found them useless. I didn't even get any clicks from them. The visitors to my site come from Google searches (I watch my statcounter). In my opinion, it's more important to work on your SEO ratings (so search engines like you).

I would like to gain visibility and prominence on the web for my home page. I would certainly like to know more about SEO ratings?

I know one thing that reallyhelps ratings is something you cannot control directly--how many sites link to you.
Here is an idea. (I am not sure how we would organize this.) but, if several of us would agree to create links to one another's sites it would help all of us in the search engines. The links could be on a kind back page out of the way location; doesn't matter (as I understand it).

I get 1,500 - 3,000 clicks per month from the one Google Ad I've placed as a test. Pretty consistent over the last year and running only in the UK, Bermuda, U.S. and Canada.
That turns into about a half dozen direct contacts every month.

This does help. I am a member of a link exchange from another photog. board. You do have to be careful how it's used, though, or Google will not like it and could ban you.
Any easy way to create links to your site on your own is to comment on blogs and leave your URL (lots of blogs allow you to type your name and URL so that when people click on your name it leads to your website).

Or comment on forums. I find I get a lot of clicks from forums and google LOVES it when people see your link and click on it. :D
