While I was on vacation recently, I uploaded photos to smugmug and entered keywords and captions. Now I want to get the photos back onto my computer. I know that I can either download them from smugmug or order a backup CD, but I'm concerned about whether there's a way to download the captions and keywords.

Does smugmug store this information in the jpg itself such that my album software would be able to find it? If not, is there any way to get the information exported from smugmug?

.. there is a service called "smugmug EXPORTER (http://www.flyingpylon.com/se/)". Check it out, it may do what you need.

Eventually my "Smugmug EXPLORER (http://www.smugmugexplorer.com)" will be able to assist you with this task, but it's not tomorrow..

Yup, Smugmug Exporter is perfect - it does exactly what I want. (By the way, Nikolai, Smugmug Explorer has been great help to me too -- thanks very much for creating it!)
