I got quite a response from my LA Fashion Week performance, so I finaly bit the bullet and set up my home studio. Many thanks to my family for giving up the living room! :bow

Very cool. That shows me I will have plenty of room once I get the in-house studio set up. Fortunately my wife also want studio space for dance, so we get to multi-task a room with lots of space & no furniture. :ivar

Thanks! Yeah, this model is getting old, fat and cranky, besides he can't keep his mouth shut about what's going wrong with the lighting, aperture, etc.

Was preparing for today's shoot, so snapped a couple of the setup during the day. Two black flatsheets turned my high-key into low-key in 2 minutes and with $0 cost.

As you can see, an easy access to the second floor gives me perfect top-down view with a fairly large distance, I can even use my 70-200 here :ivar

I am positively green with envy.

All I have available are two little Elinchrom D-lite's that we just got for my photographers' club. Nik, you can expect an entry to "One." using those lights :thumb

I am envious of the height you have to be able to do some of this stuff. Where I was snapping lots of my photos has been taken over due to water in the basement.... Still not nearly the height you have though

I finally came to appreciate the real convenience of this rather wierd design of my house :-) I guess the original architect was the photog ...;-)

Nik - What is the name, brand, model of your white background and stand?

Looks like a cool set up! Access from up high may be very valuable too!

Jim,
most of my grip stuff is from www.amvona.com (http://www.amvona.com), made by Dynatran. Dirt cheap, good quality.
Collapsible backdrops (I have two 8x12: white and moire gray) are most likely from adorama, but it was 3 years ago, it could be b&h, too.
And yes, access from the top can be precious... :wink

What about your boom? Looks cool and a bit more flexible and easier to use than the AB one or a c-stand (which is what I use now). What kind of boom is that?

Pete,
it's essentially a C-stand. Also from amvona, also dirt-cheap (like $70 with s/h). They also have more sturdy $90 one, for some reason I opted for cheap one:-) As you can see from the initial series, it still can hold ProFoto Compact monolight just fine, but I mostly plan to use it with SunPack for numerous reasons, the primary ones being:
1) sunpack is battery powered, so no cord to hassle with
2) sunpack is MUCH lighter, so the worst case scenario may be not that bad at all
3) sunpack can deliver a very small amount of light, which is ideal for hairlight (monolights are sometimes too powerful)
4) It took me a piece of black poster paper, a patch of gaffer tape and 5 minutes make a great snoot for it. Profoto snoots are like $100-$150. Paper wouldn't work for them unless you turn off the modeling light, which kinda defies the purpose...
