Saw these guys on a trip out to the Baylands.

According to Sibley's, they are natives but I haven't seen many of them.
Very pretty birds.

There was a large flock of them on the south side of the San Mateo Bridge and we would look for them from the car on the bridge when we went to Fremont. However, now they are doing something to that salt pond and there isn't very much water in it, so no white pelicans.

Aren't they beautiful in flight? I guess I have to hang around the baylands more, but it would be frustrating unless I get some kind of different camera. I guess I can just enjoy watching them, they are so pretty!

Hi Ian, we have White Pelicans down my way, they are always hanging around the boat ramp.....waiting for the boats to come back in, plus its in a sort of cove which would give them protection from the wind.

I must say I was surprised when I first saw a Brownd Pelican on the internet, I wondered if they been in an oil slick, I'd never seen one before.

They are very graceful to watch, when they take off and when they land its like watching a small plane come in for a landing :D

Thanks for sharing......... Skippy (Australia)

Hey Ian,

Good catch. White Pelicans are harder to find than the browns. Excellent BIF and good exposure.

I've been there a dozen times, or more and these are the first pelicans, of any color, I've seen there :dunno Were they close in, or did you have to go out to the end of the rickety wooden walkway to view them?

Thanks for sharing,
Steve

They were right at the pumping station viewing area. Right at the "Y"
for Shoreline Park/Baylands.

Nice Ian.

White Pelicans are real showy and my favorites. Plenty at the Salton Sea.

Nice shot Ian. I had the same reaction as skippy when I first saw brown pelican pics. We only have white pelicans here (Aus), and lots of them.

Let's hope these beauties don't end up black and covered in oil. Nicely done.
