View Full Version : HEADS UP: New Release, March 17, 2008. Slideshow Issues?

We plan on doing some system maintenance in conjunction with a planned new release, this Sunday night, March 16th. If all goes well, we'll be in read only mode for about 30 minutes. Photos will be viewable but you won't be able to update your sites, add photos, or use the shopping cart while in read only mode.
Exact time is to be determined, but if I had to guess it'll be somewhere +/- an hour or two from midnight, California time.
More precise info as we know it.

I can't wait for the new < mumble, mumble, mumble > to come online! The new < mumble, mumble, mumble > is going to be great!
< mumble, mumble, mumble > will be replaced with the real feature after I know what it is, and this text removed, so it will seem to future viewers that I knew what was going to be added to the site! :lol3

Our new help section (http://www.smugmug.com/help/picture-storage) on the matter:
Square thumbs give your gallery a clean look by automatically choosing a square portion of your image to be the representative thumbnail. This does not affect your original images and you can always switch back. Or, you can zoom the thumbs (http://www.smugmug.com/help/digital-photos) yourself, if you prefer.
Square thumbs will not take effect until you do something that generates new display copies like rotating or watermarking, or adding new photos. To apply square thumbs to an entire existing gallery, use a 'bulk' tool such as 'rotate photos.'

David,
The problem is with your ModifyText function, I have disabled it by commenting out the addEvent call.
The problem is that it replaces either http://DrDavid.smugmug.com or http://www.wolfsnap.com with either http://DrDavid.smugmug.com/galleries or http://www.wolfsnap.com/galleries and I believe that that is ovewriting the full screen slideshow url. You probably need to review that code so that it's not so obtrusive

Yeah, that bug has been around a while. It hasn't been a super high priority because we are slow and don't have any cards except Holiday ones.

The old slideshow is using it now, so you can get to it by going into your control panel and click on the Settings tab. It's on the line that begins with password.

And, I thought the bio box was what I was using on my guestbook page, and that would seem to be the case. Do I just stick the new code in there with my guestbook/bio text?

On one computer the slideshow works but has title bar and sides so my 1920x1080 pictures do not fill the screen.
On my other computer the slideshow is fullscreen but only the first picture appears and stalls or I just get a black screen that says press escape to exit fullsreen mode. Both are Vista and E7. All galleries are the same.
If my old slideshow code is causing this it's a big headache, If I enable the bio to use the flash code it appears on my homepage and galleries pages.

Looks like you just copied your bio text into your guestbook gallery, so you should be fine. The guestbook is not actually using the biotext, so you can copy the new slideshow code into your bio and remove the text that is there. Make sure you have a copy of it somewhere -- just in case :)

Thanks, Barb! I'm getting closer! My slideshow gallery does not have a password and does have external links turned on, but I do have it unlisted. Where the slideshow should be it is asking for a password. And it's doing that for every page where I have subcategories listed...but only in logged out IE 7. Sorry for all the trouble...this has probably been hashed out somewhere before!
EDIT: OK...I think I had an incomplete Album ID. Now it's not asking for a password, but it just says SmugMug with no pics.
EDIT: Doh! Now it's there! Now I just need to get rid of the thumbnail bar...I think I saw something about that...going to look!
Thanks!

There was still some code in your footer javascript that I removed and also corrected the albumID in your slideshow code. Looking good!

It appears that my slideshow is no longer working correctly either. It runs through the gallery one time now. Before the update it cycled in a loop.
Loads and runs once with IE7 and FF. Thoght FF took about four minutes to load with "waiting for api.smugmug.com...." sitting in the lower left corner of the browser.... Once FF loads and plays the show once, that message is replaced with "Read api.smugmug.com".
Any ideas how to fix it?:dunno

Yeah, the 600, 600 is your width and height. You can change that.
Add the following to your CSS code in your customization to center the slideshow:
#userBio {text-align: center !important;}
EDIT: Also, you will probably want to remove this from your CSS:
.homepage .boxBottom {
border: none;
padding-left: 107px;
}
That is forcing your slideshow to the right.

Another thing that might not be related, the thumbnails on the gallery page didn't show up in IE. I refreshed the page and they popped.

One more thing...Visitor View is very cool! I think I've punched that button a hundred times tonight! I noticed that no matter where I am on the site, hitting VV always takes me back to my homepage. Then I have to navigate back to where I was. Not a big deal...just thought I'd mention it.

We built it to reside solely on your homepage. It's only elsewhere because of your customization.
So I don't know if there is a solution to that for you. Sorry!

Yes I have the latest flash...
In Firefox and IE (using MS Vista Business) the slideshow doesn't work for my galleries.
It goes black and full screen with the words "Hit Escape to exit slideshow". In firefox the words fade out and I'm left with a black screen and in IE the words never leave the screen.
The slideshow never starts I can only hit ESC to get back to the gallery.

Well, this morning my home page slideshow works again:) Not sure what changed but that is good news. However, on one computer the "fullscreen" slideshow has a titlebar, and address bar, and sides. The slideshow works but it is not fullscreen. The other computer wants to go fullscreen, but locks on the opening page.

The new slide shows look great, but how do I turn the comments on or off?
Many of my galleries are locked into "journal" with the slide show button turned on. The old slideshow had a checkbox for turning comments on or off. I haven't found that option on the new slideshow. Right clicking brings up a flash dialog box.
Any hints?

You mean "captions" which are different than "comments" - correct, there's not that option at the moment, with the full screen slideshow. You can have them with the gallery style slideshow though :thumb

So no captions now with fullscreen slideshow
because you are using Flash?
Also with window resizing the photos are cutoff depending on orientation.
one more thing, does the size of the pictures have any effect on the slideshow speed. IE if i have originals enabled. It seems to run slower with the new Flash slideshow.
thanks

But I most definitely wiill NOT like them if I can't find a way to display captions while in full-screen slideshow mode. Can someone tell me how to do that? I detest in general the large number of totally uncaptioned, unidentified pics which I find in Online photo albums generally. But if others don't care to caption their photos, so be it. But MINE are captioned, virtually exery single one of my thousands of Smug Mug photos. If I cannot display those captions while in full-screen slideshow mode, THAT will be a major setback!
Please tell me I can...and how to. Thanks (scooter78666)

The slideshow works but it is not fullscreen. The other computer wants to go fullscreen, but locks on the opening page.
OK, I got the two computers to act alike. I deleted the flash plugins and active-x for adobe. The slideshow then reloaded the flash plugin.
I deleted everthing from customization to make it virgin and when I click slideshow the screen still goes black and says "click esc to exit fullscreen mode". Then nothing.
Once in a while the first picture will load, but that's it.
Not sure I like seeing thumbnails below the picture though, they should disappear if you move the curser off the screen.
So after reading through all this thread could someone at SM give us a summary of the changes that were made & features that were added / changed? It's hard to decipher among the chaff

I seem to be having the slideshow issue too. I have checked on different computers at work . Some use Firefox, some use IE. But it seems to be either stuck on my first image, or just a little green Smugmuggy thingy in the middle of the page. :scratch :scratch

I went to your site and it does the same thing for me. On both my Vista with IE7 machines.

To clear your cookies in Internet Explorer 7, click on "Tools". It's in the top right corner of the browser. Then select "Internet Options". That's going to open a new window with some options. Make sure that the "General" tab is selected. Then click on "Delete..." under the Browsing History section. That will bring up another window. Locate the "Delete Cookies..." button and click on that. That will remove all the cookies from your browser.

One more thing...Visitor View is very cool! I think I've punched that button a hundred times tonight! I noticed that no matter where I am on the site, hitting VV always takes me back to my homepage. Then I have to navigate back to where I was. Not a big deal...just thought I'd mention it.
Just another note...When I'm somewhere other than my homepage in Owner View, clicking Visitor View takes me to my hompage (and I have to click back to where I was originally). When I'm somewhere other than my homepage in Visitor View, clicking Owner View keeps me on the same page. :thumb It would be nice if clicking Visitor View did not have to go to the homepage but could stay on the page where it was clicked.
Thanks for the updates, folks!

We built it to reside solely on your homepage. It's only elsewhere because of your customization.
So I don't know if there is a solution to that for you. Sorry!

I have been unable to run the full screen slideshow in IE7 on Vista. It runs in Firefox on Vista, and it runs in IE7 on XP.
I've only enabled the full screen slideshow in one gallery for now - http://denise.smugmug.com/gallery/3961344.
If I request a full-screen slideshow, I see a full screen of bright green flash by, followed by a full screen of black containing the message "press esc to exit full screen mode". That screen remains, no photos. If I hit esc, I am back in my gallery. If I click the slideshow button again, I am placed in full screen mode - this time with the first slide in my gallery showing, the thumbs across the bottom, and the same message showing in the middle of the screen. The slideshow is not active, and I am unable to click anywhere on the screen. Actually, that's probably not quite true. I can click once, but nothing happens and at that point the mouse pointer is gone.
On the off chance that my customization is causing the problem, I tried a slideshow on my sister's account. She has a standard account, so no customization. The same problem occurs there. I also tried it on Barb's www.photoscapedesign.com (http://www.photoscapedesign.com), same problem occurs there too.
I have already tried clearing the temporary files, no change in behavior.

KEEE-rap. Yeah yeah, full-screen slideshows are sexy and all, but I guess they only work well if you've got crazy fast MacPros (ahem) with connections that are somehow faster than mine to SmugMug's servers.
I've tested full-screen with on a Ubuntu Linux box w/ quad 3GHz CPUs and 2GB of RAM (Dell Precision 690) as well as a much more modest (but still not slow!) Win XP box running on a single 2.8GHz CPU w/ 1GB of RAM (Dell Optiplex GX620).
Full-screen slideshow is sluggish, and laggy. It comes up with the first photo, and thumbs *crawl* to load. When they finally do, if I want to skip to an interesting photo by clicking on a thumb, there is a noticable lag before the progress bar shows up and it switches. If I impatiently click on several thumbs while waiting for the first one, it queues them up, and then they load in quick sequence, although even then, there are substantial lags between photo loads.
It's really really annoying.
Thank god the slideshow "style" option is still available from the drop-down. That works very well, and is much better than the old JavaScript version. My suggestion is to make *that* the default action for the Slideshow button, and provide a "full screen" option from within there. And then I would suggest you fix the laggy full-screen slideshow. Because it sucks.
Sorry, I'm not usually so cranky (really!), but I'm really not pleased with this particular "upgrade".
(Oh yeah, network connection is a DS3 on AT&T's network in Sunnyvale, CA. A traceroute from Smugmug to here shows that it's going out the llnw.net pipe and coming in on our pbi.net circuit. No more than 6 little hops.)
Everything else on SmugMug is loading fine. Using Lightbox in XL or slideshow "style" in Large I can flip through photos quite rapidly.
Nyeh.

(For the record, IE7 emulation mode is really good at pretending to be, IE7, though I do understand your point.)
On the wife's computer now. Logged into smugmug for the first time. Opened a gallery of mine (different from the one I'd tried the slideshow on before), and it worked perfectly.
Then I returned to my galleries and clicked on the gallery that I had tried the slide show on my computer - no dice - just a black screen.
Tried a 3rd gallery - also a black screen. Note that this problem (black screen) is very different from what I was experiencing on my own computer.

Are slideshows completely busted for password-protected galleries. They work (slowly though 6-8 seconds to load for each image) on non-password protected galleries, but don't work at all on password-protected galleries.
I view the gallery like a normal viewer. I'm prompted for the password. I enter the password and am taken to the gallery. I press the slideshow button. I first get the Press Esc message, then that goes away and all I have is a giant black screen. Nothing ever appears. I can press Esc to get back to the gallery.
The old Smugmug slideshow used to work on password protected galleries and the slideshow button is still offered. I've done no customization related to slideshows. I'm just talking about the built-in slideshow that comes up when you hit the slideshow button in a gallery.
Same result with IE6 and Firefox. Slideshows work for me on public galleries with no password.

Hi Andy:
The issue isn't with the first image load. It's with the new fancy thumbnal nav along the bottom. I think most people will be drawn to click on thumbnails that they think look interesting. When I do this, there is a noticable lag before images load. And it doesn't matter whether the slideshow is paused or not. From the example above, if I click on one of the Ghost Rider shot, there is a 7-second delay before the image shows up (or worse still, not even the progress bar). I then click on a few other shots, and they come up right away (crossfading as soon as I click), but the I went to click on the Hulk (hello), and again with a delay, this time only 2 seconds, but still, when you're used to the instantaneous switching in Lightbox, or the old JS slideshow or in the new slideshow style presentation, this is really annoying.
Version 9.0.115.0 of Flash.

With Safari vistor mode, the slideshow stop at the wedding cake, and jumps through more than one photo at a time, in areas
With Firefox I only see the first photo.

One more piece of possibly related information - the slideshow style (from the style dropdown) also does not work on any of my galleries in IE7 on Vista. It's fine in Firefox, and my XP machine is at work, so I'll need to check that in the morning.
Symptoms? I get a screen showing my gallery description, the slideshow controls, and a big empty space for the missing slideshow.

Sorry.. Apparently I'm losing my mind. I think it's the lightbox view I was thinking of, and confusing with the slideshow.. :rolleyes
But, I do like the new flash slideshow! Although, if I could make a suggestion, do a bit of a speed test on the slideshow the first time it's opened and store in a cookie the results. Then, scale the images to make it faster on slower connections. Just a thought..

Using FF Firefox/2.0.0.12, the slideshow currently is not working and before it would be stuck on the first image and then it would skip about two images on to the fourth shot or so on the homepage. Gallery slideshow does not seem to work.
Using IE 7.0.5730.11
On the homepage slidesho only some of the images will come up in the thubnail but the slideshow will not play. It's just stuck on the first image.
Gallery slideshow shows it loading up for a second, but after that, nothing.
EDIT: Seems to be fine now both in FF and IE.
EDIT II: Now neither is working again. I give up. Hope things get fixed soon.

This new slideshow is extremely buggy for me. I have IE7 running in Vista and I have many issues. In "Slideshow" view, I can't click on "Fullscreen" or "Slideshow" (nothing happens). Also, when I am in "Smugmug" view, clicking "Slideshow" takes me to a new window that freezes with the caption "Press Esc to exit fullscreen mode." 1 out of 10 times the first slide will come up, but it freezes after that. When I press Esc, I get a weird green screen that sometimes won't go away. In all other views, the fullscreen slideshow works, but it is very slow and clunky. In Firefox on Vista everything works, but again it is very slow and clunky. The "Fast" setting is way to slow, and the clicking on a thumbnail takes up to 10 seconds to display.
I appreciate all the changes that Smugmug is making to make our sites better, especially stretchy. :thumb But is a Zenfolio-like, super fast, super slick slideshow too much to ask? I realize this new flash slideshow has just been released, but it has a very long way to go to get to where Zenfolio already is.

Still an issue. It only plays the gallery one time.

Any ideas?
--- Denise
I have this exact same problem. Even Barb's site doesn't work. I though no site would work for me but I tried this site and it works! Maybe there is a clue here?

Still have problems here. With Safari login mode, the slideshow on homepage is slow and my horizontal photos are missing the borders on the left and right sides.
With Safari vistor mode, the slideshow stop at the wedding cake, and jumps through more than one photo at a time, in areas
With Firefox I only see the first photo.
One of my concerns is , when possible clients go to my site , they will turn away, especially if they are told to install latest editions in software or empty caches.
Raptorcaptors website and dennismullens site works for me in FF. Why doesnt mine?
When I do get one photo to show on homepage slideshow the borders of my photos are missing on the sides.
THe same goes with the border in safari.
Is there a fix soon?
Also; on the left bottom of FF window , it shows , Read api.smugmug.com , when I go to my site.

Hi, looking at your site I see normal smugmug style galleries. Can you pelase clear your cookies and try again? :ear
Really stupid question, BUT how do I do that. I am just getting started on that whole thing (I am one of the copy paste people!) ???
It seems like that just the slideshow button is huge, coz the show doesn`t start until I press the button.
Wrong place, but my navbar is not center and I tried the stuff you wrote in one of the other threads, it`s not working. I guess I am missing something.
Thanks in advance!

My fullscreen gallery works and looks great using Win XP and IE6 overhere!
Trouble starts when I want to exit the fullscreen slideshow. After clicking 'Return to Gallery' I enter a fullscreen version of gallery I was in. By fullscreen version I mean: like the F11 option in IE, but without buttons or windows bar. Another funny thing is my customized header is gone and replaced by the SmugMug one. The only way to exit the screen is by using Alt-F4 to close the window.
Hope this makes sense... Example gallery: Blue Angels (http://www.marcoglasbergen.nl/gallery/1757135_adwLG#87075885).

I'm experiencing the same problems with Vista and using IE7 - no go - just hte black screen with the words in the midle of hte page - however the link above does work for me using the same pc.
I also tried using my work laptop, using IE6 and that still does not work.
However, when I use my Opera browser it does work using Vista - go figure, Microsfot's browser causes the issues !

so far.......
...a suggestion for a possiple future release would be the ability to add music to the slide show. I know, I know....music is a personal thing - some like it and some hate it, but I think it matches very well with a slide show. It would be nice if we had the ability to add music to the new gallary slide show feature - even if SM held the music files on the SM servers and offered us a small selection of music choices with a simple music On/Off button.
Keep up the excellent work!

You can add music. I have done just that.. (Check out http://www.WolfSnap.com/ ) I use sonific.com for the music. Easy to use, free, and has complete instructions for smugmug.

You mean "captions" which are different than "comments" - correct, there's not that option at the moment, with the full screen slideshow. You can have them with the gallery style slideshow though :thumb
Andy, here is a description of the update on the smugblog release notes:
The slideshow gallery style, which you get to by choosing from the pull-down menu in the upper right of gallery pages, inherited the new goodness. Turn captions on or off, choose photo sizes, and make thumbnails visible or not. Then admire silky transitions.
Am I misunderstanding what it says?? So are there captions available in the new slideshow? It sounds like there should be. I'd love this option back if it really isn't available.

Captions are available in the slideshow viewing style, but not the full-screen slideshow. I'll be sure to pass your request for captions on in the full-screen slideshow :)

I just re-installed Win XP and switched security from McAfee to CA. Also had to re-establish my home network. Found this thread after you mentioned CA,

Hi,
We have a 10 step method to add Smugmug as a trusted site:
* 1. right-click on the CA icon, point to CA Personal Firewall and
select 'open CA Personal Firewall'
* 2. click on the big 'Privacy' icon in the left column
* 3. make sure the 'Internet Browser Protection' tab on top of the
settings screen is selected
* 4. click on 'manage sites'
* 5. click on the 'add' symbol
* 6. enter smugmug.com in the url field
* 7. click ok
* 8. make sure you see 6 green checkmarks for smugmug.com
* 9. click on close
* 10. close the CA Personal Firewall window and enjoy using your
SmugMug galleries
* If you encounter any custom domain name that uses SmugMug as well
without smugmug.com in the url, repeat the steps I gave you for
this address as well to add the site to your trusted sites. That
should fix the issues you had with the software.blocking feature
was causing the the images not to load.

Thanks, the 10 steps did the job after clearing cookies. You're a gem!
Now, I'm just worried about customers that may also be using CA Security. They're not going to take the time to figure out firewall configuration and just assume Smugmug is broken. In fact, I've already had one potential customer complain that when he clicked "Buy: photo", nothing happened. Can you point me to some resources on making my pages more security friendly? I know I probably can't change the "Buy" routine.

I have a power account.
thanks for the help

I'm guessing your referring to the slideshow button in the galleries.
Add to your CSS.
For individual galleries.
.gallery_xxxxxxxx .play_slideshow {display: none;}
Or site wide
.play_slideshow {display: none;}

Looks good! I think you guys nailed it!
Thanks Barb and Andy! :clap
Sorry guys!:cry The big black box is back! This time when you click on it, it goes into fullscreen slideshow, and plays the images from whatever gallery you are in.
I tried disabling the "bio" on my homepage but still did it. Also tried it on another computer and had the same issues.
Could it be an issue with using "smugmug small"?

Clear your cache, and see if it happens here:

I temporarily made this gallery viewer controlled and Smug Gradient theme. I want to see if the problem is your computer, your customizing, or us.

I am having the same problem! I think he means that the slideshow button has become really big. Well the button itself is tine and in the left corner, but there is a big black field attached to the button. And when you click the field the slideahow opens. That only happens on some computers. At home it works fine. At work the big field appears.
I personally do not want to remove the slideshow button, just the huge field around it!
Greetings
