Despite the fluke with NBC I got invited to shoot another part of LA Fashion Week, which I did last night. Of course, everything and everybody was fashionably late, so instead of being done by 11 I left after midnight. Still managed to process and upload few hundred pics.
I tried to shoot f/4, set up my sunpaks to cover the catwalk in a cross fire, but in the end I made a mistake with positioning myself on a side instead of being directly in front of the L- shaped catwalk:-( It was only one designer, crowd was very think, so I didn't have a chance to recover:-(. Oh well... Still passed away a few more business cards, some even to people who were on the red carpet (I didn't bug them, they approached me first:-).
Below is a short sample.
(EDIT: oh, and I forgot to mention that I got a few Saturday pics purchased - at least got the parking fees covered. Gas is still in red though:-)

This was a great introduction to this kind of shooting for you Nik.
You got to see how it all works, and having lots of other photographers you would have been able to see how they went about doing the shoot as well.
Nothing like on the job training hey :thumb
What a fun way to learn too .... Skippy :D

Maxine, thanks for your comments!
Yes, it was in fact a great training and a great networking oppportunity.
I was also amazed how much apriori respect people lugging big gear have amongst this designer/modeling crowd...:scratch

Looks like you had fun, Nik.
Did you use your umbrellas and softboxes for your flash equipment?
I like shot #2 the best.
Mr Kani did not look happy in his picture with the model.:dunno

Hi Jim, thank for stopping by!
Yes, the pros outweights the cons, methinks.
No I use straight flashes. Umbrellas would cost me at least an extra stop (I was already at f/4) and made it very awkward to set up.
However, I raised them to the very ceiling, like this:
Right light:

Left light and the catwalk (and a fellow photog Chelsea):

so the realtively light colored ceiling partially worked as a diffuser (the rest of the ceiling was pure black - it's a night club after all)
I agree, Mr. Kani was not particularly happy at the moment, I guess he was tired or something. Also the show was late by one hour, that might have added to it.

Good stuff, Nik. The biggest flaw I see is that big light-colored post in a lot of the runway shots, it's a pretty big distraction.

Thanks!
That post.. yeah,, The put it right at the corner of the catwalk's "L", so there was no way for me to not get it from where I was. I did what I could :dunno
