I posted some pics of Minnehaha Falls a few days back that were just poor.

I hope this can fix that. I did end up with a few dark corners that I didn't
notice till after i did the post precessing. Oh well.

D reb, kit lens, 2 nd 8 filters, 1 polarizer filter, a tripod, and getting my
ass out of bed at 6:30 this morning.

The postcard shot is great. I like the range of color/contrast between the dark water and rock and the white ice. Tricky exposure.

Thanks. I used two shots for this and blended them in photoshop. One with
a longer exposure, (lighter) one with a shorter exposure. (darker)

Thanks Shay.
I hate dragging a tripod along, but for the longer exposures with a mostly
white background, I couldn't think of another way to do it.
It ended up being a good thing that I had the tripod as I used it as a walking
stick on the way out from behind the falls. It was kind of icy.

There is a lot of room behind the falls. In the first post, The blue ice is about
7 feet high. Behind the falls itself, the ceiling is around 10 feet high.
This pic shows a bit more. I would have taken more pics of the area behind
the ice, but there was an Indian fellow there, and I'm not sure, but I would
guess praying. I thought it disrespectful to take his pic, so I didn't.
(as you may have read about the school shootings on the Red Lake Res. in Mn)

Same pic as in first post, just no crop.

Wonderful photos! I especially like the effect with the slow shutter in broad daylight, not something you see often.

Thanks Ana. I owe it all to neutral density filters and a tripod.:D

6:30, why so late? I was up and at them at 4:00 am yesterday. Alas, I didn't get any shots to compare with yours.

Very nice! (Maybe I'll sleep in and try 6:30 next time) :):

A revisit well worth the making. I really like the slower shutter speeds. Colors are great.

Thanks Sam. Ya know, they make little pills to help you with your sleeping
disorder.:D

During the week I get up at 5:30 every day. I kind of like to be lazy on the
weekends. (of course the wife says I'm lazy all of the time.):D

I don't like using a tripod, it brings to much attention to yourself, but on
this day, there were only a handful of people in the park, so it wasn't to bad.

Hey, Dave, don't knock that tripod. ...or the attention. People see me shooting with my tripod in the national parks all the time and walk up and just start talking and asking questions. One of the questions which is nearly always asked is, "Where can we see some of your photos." That never has bothered me and I always pass out my cards when someone approaches and talks to me or asks me questions. The really plus side, it that it has turned into sales when they've gone to my web site listed on the card.

:clap :clap :clap :clapHey Dixie. There are some differences between you and me. You are selling
your pics, I can't give mine away.:D Just kidding. I don't think anyone has
ever asked me were to see my pics. I will say that the other day I went to
a wildlife refuge with my d reb with the sigma 80-400 on it. Every person
there that had a camera with them, came over to see what lens I had.
Just think if it was painted white.:D I guess I prefer to blend into the
background and not to be a focal point.

Hey I just thought of something. I can have a T-shirt made that say's
"These photos can be seen at www.pbase.com/davev" and wear it when I
go shooting. Maybe I'll get some hits then.

Thanks again for looking.

Point taken. ...but never forget:

It's all in the exposure. ...and that goes for the photographer as well as the photograph.
Happy shooting. :thumb

Hi Dave,

I know those falls! http://www.digitalgrin.com/images/smilies/xzicon_smile_cool.gif It's very cool back up behind the frozen falls. I haven't been back there for a couple years, although I'm at the falls about once a week. Were you as nervous as I was trying to creep along the ice?

A nice series. Here's one from a couple years ago from there that I like...

Oh, here's another one you may find interesting... this is from the creek below the falls. It's an icycle that formed underneath the ice above the water. I had to lay down on the ice with my Sony underneath the ice to take it...

http://www.pbase.com/jfuglestad/image/4869314.jpgHey Jim.

I had no problem getting behind the falls. On Saturday morning, the temps
were just below freezing so all of the mud (with footprints) froze. It made
a real nice stairway for me to walk on, although I did use the tripod as a
walking stick.

The icicle is really cool. I didn't walk down to the river, I just stayed by
the falls.

Did you ever get a longer lenses, or are you still thinkin about it?

dave.
