I'll play! (http://davidrosenthal.smugmug.com/gallery/3800406_Zohkv#257971464_W8yi8-A-LB)

Note: to link a SmugMug video you have to use the URL that you have when the video is playing. It should end in "-LB". Any questions, you know where to ask!

Okay I will ask, how do I get the cool image with the "play" icon in it as the link/click to activate? I got how to put the link to an image, I just can't figure out how to get the image to have the play icon.:scratch

The 'play' icon is a .png that is overlayed over the image of a video in a gallery in order graphically signify that it's a video and to differentiate from an image. There is not a way to use it along with your video thumbnail to link to that I know of.

If you want to use just the 'play' graphic only, the source is here:

Ok cool. Well, I don't have anything super recent as I've been concentrating on photography this year. However, I do have a VERY short film that relates to both video and photo - it is stop-motion :D

I'll be doing more animations later this year!

Heheh. I look forward to them. My kids did stop motion stuff when they were younger, and they were a hoot.

I did this one as a test. It was rather impromptu. My grandfather, his brother, and their brother in law started singing the other day and I grabbed my laptop and used the built in webcam to record.

It's Geef Mij Maar Amsterdam (http://www.phyxius.smugmug.com/gallery/4437688_kbNMk#260797459_tkqH3-A-LB)
(they're all from Holland).

I uploaded it as my first test for a video upload to smugmug!

Thanks David :clap I love these old guys. They're in their 80s! And, they play instruments too; violin, piano, and guitar. They don't get together often; my grandfather lives here in MD, his brother is in New Orleans, and the brother-in-law is in NJ.

Hi Christina, I played the video again today and this time it opened properly.
They sing in harmony :rofl they sounded pretty good :D

The first time I tried to view it the video box had a big black line through the middle of it and only the sound played, but today it worked fine.

Angelo, what browser are you using? No matter what updates I do I can't get quicktime to work in Firefox. :dunno Is the video just not loading? Do you see the blue Quicktime "Q"?

Here's another one that I uploaded last night. It took me a couple tries to get it uploaded, maybe because it's almost to the 10min limit and was a .wmv file that had to be converted by smugmug?

This is what I do when I'm not photographing or working...I ride :D

Angelo,

I second the question about what browser you are using. Do you get the blue Q?

I use Firefox all the time and never have a problem with playing the videos.

You might want to check your file extensions to make sure another application is not trying to play the video. Some versions of Quicktime (PC) have an option you can click that will reset the file associations. You might want to try that.

I'm using Firefox. When I click on a link, like your above, I'm taken to your site where a white video windoe sets and I see the blue "Q" but nothing plays. In certain cases, after a while the blue "Q" tuens to a broken "Q" icon

All I know is I have a lot to learn shooting and making movies on the computer.

Here is my first attempt I did last weekend - Inuyama Castle 犬山 (http://amizdad.smugmug.com/gallery/4542251_788Fh#267561516) close to where I live in Nagoya, Japan. This one I didn't take too long editing it. Next time I'm going to find some good editing software first.

Dangin, what software did you use to edit that movie and how did you post that thumbnail in the forums?

Thanks

i used microsoft's photostory 3 to create the photo slideshow set to music then i brought it into adobe premiere elements to add the text and exported it as a quicktime movie.

as for the thumbnail, i just grabbed a screenshot of the browser window and cropped out the image. dirty way of doing it? yes. does it work? yes. :wink

Well, the poppies are alive, so I wanted to share this from yesterday -
I started about 6:30- around noon, I have the afternoon, but it is way to windy.
Equipment -
E-3, 12-60, HLD-4 (Vertical grip) Pclix trigger, Tripod. Assembled in Quicktime. I used around 4 BLM-1 batteries. The first 2 lasted about 8 hours of shooting.
The pclix fired off at every 13 seconds.
This is my first E-3 stop motion shoot.
After about 3,000 pictures here is what I came up with.
http://tspore.smugmug.com/photos/270306184_b6ngj-S.jpg (http://tspore.smugmug.com/gallery/4584183_HjtdZ/1#270306184_b6ngj-A-LB)
All in all, I am pleased, but the afternoon doesn't look good at all. The camera got very hot, it was over 80F at our house that day. But the E-3 just kept shooting. After doing this, I could see it not being a good move to use on your camera. So I can't recommend this practice.
I will probably in the future post more of these to this thread (http://www.fourthirdsphoto.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=151479), as I begin working on a review of the pclix.

Thank you smugmug for giving us video.

Just a time lapse I made on easter from my window. Canon 40D with a Peleng 8mm fisheye fixed lens taking pictures every 5 seconds, 1000 pictures. Used the 'Camera Settings/Remote Shooting' in the 'EOS Utility' menu and edited them with Premiere and Windows Movie Maker. Should try it out if you havent already, Fun when the weather is wacky.

OK, I have been bitten by the video bug here is my first attempt at video. This was shot at BCAM (Broad Contemporary Art Museum) in Los Angeles. I used Final cut express for the editing. I used an old Sony miniDV camera for this video.

BTW, I had so much fun putting this together I went out and bought at Canon VIXIA HV-30 yesterday (I'll post video from the HV-30 soon).

Thanks for looking.

So this weekend I was hanging out with friends working on a restoring a motorcycle for a charity project. Well Bill went and took it out for a spin and I shot some pictures (not photos, just pictures) in fast action mode and when I was running through them in Lightroom to review I thought that they made a cool video effect, so here it is pretty simple

<object width="425" height="318"><param name="movie" value="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2008051501.swf" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="flashVars" value="s=ZT0xJmk9MzA5NzU2NTA0Jms9Q1VyM1AmYT01MTI3Njg4X21y TGJHJnU9QnJhZGZvcmRCZW5uZm9ydW0=" /><embed src="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2008051501.swf" flashVars="s=ZT0xJmk9MzA5NzU2NTA0Jms9Q1VyM1AmYT01MTI3Njg4X21y TGJHJnU9QnJhZGZvcmRCZW5uZm9ydW0=" width="425" height="318" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always"></embed></object>

<object width="640" height="320"><param name="movie" value="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2008050901.swf" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="flashVars" value="s=ZT0xJmk9MzE3MjE0MzYwJms9ZG52TU4mYT01MTkzNzc3X1pr Mm9aJnU9S0VUQ0hST1NTSWZvcnVt" /><embed src="http://cdn.smugmug.com/ria/ShizVidz-2008050901.swf" flashVars="s=ZT0xJmk9MzE3MjE0MzYwJms9ZG52TU4mYT01MTkzNzc3X1pr Mm9aJnU9S0VUQ0hST1NTSWZvcnVt" width="640" height="320" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always"></embed></object>

EDIT. HA! Just deed it! Smugmug Rocks even more now! But it would have been great to have size options instead of going directly to full screen as the high compression, degrades the images when shown on a 30" Display, half size for it would have been perfect!

All still photos from a recent trip.

Created in Abobe Premiere Elements. I have version 2.0 so I had to save as an AVI and then convert to a friendlier format using MPEG Stream software. I still need to play around with the compression settings to see if the transiions will be smoother, but it displays 1000% better than it looked using youtube.

Hey jeff, i really like that slideshow, i think the music REALLY adds to it, which is why im writing to ask you where you got it?

Thanks....

Music can make or break a presentation like this. I am hoping to be able to post more now that I have figured out a way to manipulate the files to a reasonable size.

The name of the piece is "Life and Death" by Michael Giacchino. It was used as background music on the hit TV show "Lost". I was mesmerized by it during the show and tagged it as one I would like to use for a still photo dvd type presentation. It is only about 4 minutes long, but lent itself well to being remixed to length for this presentation. Try the itunes store or amazon!

Jeff, nice SS!

It's the little things, though. The 2-pop goes on the 2 in your countdown leader. And the 2 should be right when the 3 ends. Is that built in to Adobe? They got it all wrong. Sigh.

And I can't step through, but it looks like the numbers change late. :D I'm so used to looking at those things, that when they're wrong, it bugs me.

EDIT: In europe it's a 3-pop, as in 3 feet. In the US it's been a 2-pop, as in 2 seconds.

Thanks for posting this, Jeff! I was just asking myself what that music was because it fit your slideshow perfectly. I agree, music makes the performance and it's a wonderful song. Great presentation! :thumb

Not the greatest video - but thought I would share. Oct 11, I was in Kentucky with some family for the Machine Gun Shoot. We got there late just as the Night Shoot was taking place, so visibility was limited. I had a huge group standing in front of me. But you can get an idea of what it was like. The night shoot lasted for almost an 1/2 hour, but the video is only around 2 minutes or so.... Oh... it takes place at Knob Creek / Fort Knox, Kentucky

I uploaded 2 versions of this quick 2 minute video, lemme know what you think - 1080p and then a regular 720p. Does the 1080p one look ok?

Threw in a couple of stop motion / 5fps scenes and some HDR's from the Nikon as well. The Stickypod (http://www.stickypod.com/osc/product_info.php?ref=36&products_id=31&affiliate_banner_id=7) was mounted on the front bumper / passenger side.

The film is very much sped up. Prior to speeding it up it was 30 minutes of the most boring video ever seen, so I increased the speed as much as iMovie would let me and suddenly it was a little more interesting :D. It was taken using VIO POV.1 which I just got last week (primarily for skiing).

Used Animoto as a 'Quick' way to make a slideshow. Kind of a pain in the butt really. I generally like the finished product but getting there could be improved.

We were camping in the southern end of the Willamette valley (south of Eugene, OR). Weather turned wet and cold about 1/2 way through our week long trip. Wish I was still there anyway...

Comments welcome and thanks for taking a look.

Really awesome example of what can be done with DSLR video--very inspiring. Can I ask a couple of questions?

1) Did you shoot B&W in camera, or convert in post?

2) Other than possibly the B&W conversion, did you do any brightness or contrast correction, or is this essentially "straight out of camera?"

3) What software did you edit in? The reason I ask is that I really liked the sequences in which you sped up and slowed down the footage and I'm wondering how you went about doing that in your editor.

Thanks for sharing this. I pre-ordered the 7D the day it was announced in the hopes of producing much the same type of video as you have here.

Hey Ben and thanks!! I put this video together in a day, actually more like half a day. I owe it all to the ease of the software: I recently got iMovie '09 and I was waiting and waiting for it because it had all the features I wanted, specifically the ability to speed/slow your clips and image stabilization.

(Although I did use the IS on a couple of the clips, I don't reallize notice any additional smoothness, so YMMV.)

It's still best to take your time when you're shooting, I found out. And always make sure you use a sturdy tripod unless you have a few thousand to spend on one of those crazy camera stabilizers that Baldy posted.

So these were all 5D clips, shot in color. AFAIK you can't change that in-camera so I just clicked the b/w setting in iMovie to switch it over. There are lots of other presets, although some of them are a bit cheesy. I was going for the olde timey look anyway, so the slight exposure blips and artifacts I got were actually quite nice. :D You can adjust the exposure and brightness (and contrast, and saturation, etc) right in iMovie although doing that tends to make things a bit grainy. A few instances I needed to bump it up but I tried to keep that to a minimum.

The 5D firmware now allows you to adjust the ISO and aperture settings in-camera, while you're shooting. Many thanks to Ivar for showing me how to do this! Totally saved my bacon.

HTH and good luck with the new toy! :thumb

WOW! Awesome, impressive and inspiring. Kind of like an animated slideshow. Very interesting technique. It's as if a still image is spliced right before the video clip of the same so it makes the image come alive.

By the way, where did the music come from and do you know of any good sources for free royalty free music.?

I love the 7D! It has opened up a whole new world of fun, creativity, and the ability to easily capture memories at a level I never imagined would be possible.

This was my one-year-old daughter's first Christmas morning opening presents.<object width="640" height="360">

Shot completely on a 7D at 720P 60fps. Used the 24-105 f/4L for everything but a couple of early shots, which used the 85 f/1.8. Edited in Sony Vegas Platinum 9.0 using the Cineform intermediate codec. To save time (I edited the whole thing in a couple of hours the day after Christmas), there's no color grading here. This is all shot in the Standard picture mode.

Thanks schmoo! I'm out of the running in the competition, but it doesn't matter because I sure had a lot of fun making this. Most of this was done with my helmet cam (http://www.vio-pov.com/) I got last year. As for the snake, that was from a behind the scenes tour of Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo (http://www.zoo.org/) reptile exhibit.

Hi Roger,
congratulations for your site design and your work in general !
Regarding your slideshows, I see that you use Proshow and Proshow Styles intensively.
On your smugmug site, your shows have the same problems as mine, ie "jerky" images, while your originals on your PC are smooth, aren't they ?
Do you know/understand why please ?
BTW, what output format and settings do you use in Proshow to create the videos that you upload to smugmug please ? (in order to match the smugmug limitations and to get the best quality on your site)
From my side, I've tried decades of Proshow outputs & settings, all my original shows are smooth, but "jerky" on my site :scratch
You can see my last example here : http://kbhfprod.smugmug.com/You-Rock-My-Life/2010-HD-Show/11138347_qTSuf
Many thanks in advance if you have few minutes to share your Proshow/Smugmug experience.

Great work love the photodex company. I turn my slide to a 1080p in photodex witch puts it way over the size limit. I use streamclip to compress to mpeg-4. I watched your slide show it do not skip at all for me. What kind of pc do you have? You need good memory and a good video card. I think it might the internet what kind of speed do you have? Watch your green line on the bottom of the slide show to see how far it is from the video its self. If it very close to the playing part of the video it will skip real bad. I dont know if i helped at. I have very fast internet and i very good luck at watching my slide shows. Photodex requires a lot of so called power to run smooth. Any way let me know if this helped.

Still waiting on smug to get the network issues worked out so I can store here, but in the meantime here it is on YouTube. My first weekend with the 5D2 (back in Feb., was waiting on an audio track forEVER).

I had the 50mm wide open, so the focus is thin - and I know the color and WB are off, but this was right out of the box just to play around the first day. I think it still tells a cute story of breakfast at the grandparents though :)

Spend part of my weekend sorting through video clips from a trip to Europe last week. I'm no video editor and totally new to this, but video takes reliving your memories to a whole new level!

Wonderfully Shot. I've been working in television for 16 years and know a lot about editing. I think straight cuts and dissolves are the classiest. Your fade up from black at the top and about halfway through could be a lot slower to help enhance the mood. I get what you were trying to accomplish but I'm not too into the flash frames of white and black throughout. The way you sped up and slowed down the video was well executed and added to the surrealism that the black and white had already created. Well done!! :clap

What software did you use?

Let me also add that when the drum beats start toward the end, having your cuts on the downbeat would have been better.

Whoah, blast from the past! Thanks so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it especially as I am (still, more than a year later) am fumbling with the idea of video editing.

I do believe I used iMovie 09 for that video. Since then I've made several smaller movies using FCE but I'm still really unsatisfied with anything I put out. :wxwax

I have another project currently on my plate and so your suggestions come at a great time. Thx again!

Nice! You can embed your videos in this forum, too.

As for your sales question, that's something you should ask in the SmugMug Pro Sales Support (http://www.dgrin.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35) forum. :thumb

Here's my latest Hindu Wedding Video (http://www.beautifullifeuk.com/) which I filmed recently. I'm very proud of this one so would be great to know what you think.

The clip for the Wedding Film can be viewed on my blog here: Sunita & Ravinder's Indian Wedding Video (http://www.beautifullifeuk.com/blog/weddings/indian-wedding-video-kelham-hall/)

Or the Youtube link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKao-mbq9CY
