I'll bet this will be a fruitfull thread. I've taken a lot of pictures of dogs, but have found them a fairly challenging subject. They don't hold still well, and they are very interested in you. My own dog is camera shy, probably because she associates the camera with its flash, which she hates. She is also black, which was the subject of a whole thread in "photoshop shinanigans"...

Anyway, share your dog photos. Here are some of my better ones:

Vickie, my own dog and most reliable training partner:

ok, one more, can't help it. This one is cool for composition reasons. One of the first shots with my 50mm f/1.8 when I first got it. Was able to really just focus on his eyes and have the background very blurry.

What breed do you think she is? Lot's of work to keep that coat so nice!

I always try to get the camera down to my subject's level. But in this case, looking down seems to be working. I'm not exactly sure why.

I believe she may be (in part at least) Aussie shepherd. rutt, you referred to Vickie as your training partner, please elaborate.

(While I'm relegated to this laptop I can't post pics of "The Miss" - Missy, short for 'miscellaneous'.. when the vet said she was part Lab, I thought it stood for laboratory.)

I have found the best thing for pics of the dogs is to let them run around you while you are down on their level. Eventually they stop for a second and you can get a pic

Timing is so key.. unless you're like Missy. Except when she goes "fool dog", then fuhget about it.

You know, I never had a dog that "grinned" til she came to us. Lots of dogs are dumped up here in the hills, I think folks think they're setting their dogs free, and don't realize that between the packs of coyotes and the inability of most domestic dogs to hunt for food, they're actually dooming them to death. I MUST get a picture of our neighbor's dog, Charlie. Kobe reminds me of Charlie, has a certain look in the eye. Charlie saved my youngest boy's life from a pitbull that was going for the back of his head when he was five. I owe that dog, I really owe him.

Yeah, she's a little googley-eyed. That seems to be getting better. This photo was taken at 10 weeks. She is now 16 weeks. All 3.4 LBS of her. 3.4 LBS of pure ferociousness that is! I was never a small dog guy before I met my fiance. Now I love these little things. They are a great breed.

what can we do about the back ground in my doggie picture...because of the fine hair I'm stuck.. any ideas?Like you Lynn, my canine friends have to serve as my models. I cannot afford real models and my wife will not allow me to shoot nudes so I shoot canines instead. But like real models, they sometimes have flyaway hair and it can be a problem to select or extract in PS. So... what I do is after getting the picture leveled and corrected is to add a white mask layer. I then use a soft brush to paint with black the areas I want to be able to see. If I expose too much I just use the white brush on the mask layer to cover it back up. Then I may flatten the layers out and just paint the background black like in the following images. My canine companions don't seem to mind being photgraphed but they sure will never sit with the background I prefer so like you I have to correct it afterwards. The first picture of the brown and white dog was shot on my kitchen floor with kitchen chair legs and kitchen island for a less than great background so..... a little work in PS and Voila!

http://pathfinder.smugmug.com/photos/3267542-L.jpg

Likewise for my little Plott Hound - she never seems to want to lie down where I would prefer her to lie down but - No Problem! Jim Dandy to the rescue!

Thanks Waxy - Plott hounds are just great dogs - proud and truly fearless, but friendly and good family dogs - THE state dog of North Carolina! All kinds of trivia reside between my ears.http://www.dgrin.com/images/icons/lickout.gif

I have been playing with the Lighting filter under Render in the Filter column in PS - It lets you add lighting highlights after the fact - and I used this filter for the shots of both dogs. I use the dogs for practice, so when/if I shoot other subjects I will have an idea of what I am doing. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

It's against the leash law, but people with dogs in Newton, MA congregate a couple of times a day in the old field in Cold Spring Park to let their dogs play and run off the leash. It's a great place for dog photography, since they run themselves until they are relaxed.

I learned something new on Sunday. Did you know that chows have purple tounges?

Here are the best three I got Sunday late afternoon.

Your dog looks like a Dogue de Bordeaux? If not what kind of mastiff?
My fathers' Dogue de Bordeaux "MiMi," died this past February of cancer (DaD lives with us here in Virginia). It started in her mamary glands... They did a radical mastectomy late October, but it literally consumed her entire abdominal cavity within 14 weeks. She had great spirit right up until the week before she died. She was a terrific member of our family, and sorely missed.

Luc was home with pneumonia this winter, and Chloe was his constant companion... Doing her job, and working hard to get him better, so she could take her place on the playroom sofa...

Gucci (bottom), a Coonhound and Elizabeth Taylor(top) a Powderpuff Crested mix, were both rescue dogs. Gucci belongs to our daughter SuMMer, and Taylor belongs to our twin sons' MaTT & LuC. (Taylor is a male, but SuMMer named him... Said he'd be neutered anyway and asked if I had seen Liz lately... Suffice it to say, the name stuck!)
Yes, I know that Taylor is blurry... Did the PS Sharpening Trick... Still...

Today was Do Dah Day in Birmingham. People bring their pets (mostly dogs) to a local park, listen to music and have a good time. The proceeds benefit animal shelters etc.

What a great thread!

After unsuccessfully taking Buddy to get his picture "professionally" taken (you'd have thought we were taking him to the V-E-T ...), I realized doing it yourself is a whole lot better. Sitting still for Buddy has never been a problem ..., as long as there is food/treat involved!

This picture is a collage of two current photos with a picture when he was a few months old. He LOVES his balls ...

We got Buddy as a pup from the SPCA and the father was unknown. Because of his coat and his tail, the vet thinks he's a bit husky (he "talks" alot too). We call him "Buddy the Wonder Dog" ... because we wonder if he knows he's a dog ... He is 85 pounds big baby and thinks he's human :D He expects to go EVERYWHERE. He would drive the car if he could reach the pedals! Instead, he just co-pilots. Did I say that he sheds?! He's the gift that just keeps on giving... But we wouldn't have it any other way. Dogs are part of the family ...

Hey Erik

We still don't know. We'll have to wait until we take him to a real vet back in the States. Thanks!! He's cool too. Great personality.

In our "playroom" we have an ugly old red sofa. We kept it for the boys (11 yr. old twins), so that they would have a place to stretch out and watch TV, or read... More often than not, it is our four legged children who claim its domain. Should you want to sit on the sofa, you have to fight for a spot. Really the only way to gain a position, is to lure them off with a dog buscuit or a walk, even then you have to race 'em back... Anyway, that's why most of my shots of the "gang" are on the "ugly sofa."

Gucci takes "Food" seriously... as my daughter was eating a slice of 'cheese cake," Gucci was making her desires known.

I like this just fine. There is a place for P&S shots and this is a good example. Nice work.
