Hey you'll,
I was hanging out by the swamp when I saw a Crested Caracara coming in for a landing
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/18036682-L.jpg
he had spotted a turtle on the ground
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/18036669-L.jpg
he had a tougher time than I do with shrink-wrapped items
http://behret.smugmug.com/photos/18036676-L.jpg
he saw me and not wanting to share he took off in a hurry

These are very nice, but maybe you needed an even faser shutter speed?

Love the wing movement in the first shot. Nice contrast and color saturation. We must not have the Crested Caracara in PA. Cool looking bird>
I'm not sure why but ever since I viewed your "turtle shots" about a half hour ago, my neck really hurts. It seems longer too . . . :dunno.

I like the first photo, the one of the flying bird. There are no mutilated turtles involved in that one.
I was wondering if you took that in your backyard, the grass looks mowed. You could be by a marsh.:thumb
Nice set totally, like the BIF best.

On the two flight shots I definitely could have used a faster shutter speed but they didn't come out half bad with the lower speed. I was headed home when I saw them coming in so I didn't have the time to change my camera settings (ISO and shooting priority) but had to do what I could with what I had.

Hey Ben,
Glad you enjoyed them. The Caracara can only be found in two states (Florida and Texas) according to my bird guide.
I wan't happy with that tree also but I couldn't get the Caracara to fly where I wanted him to go. Dang bids can be so uncooperative. :cry

Harry, I really like that first one. It's a wee bit soft, IMHO, but with the slightly saturated colors I reckon the combo works really well. Nice image! :thumb

Hey Ginger,
I think mutilated is a bit harsh. I prefer digested. :D
It wasn't my backyard, the Wetlands are maintained by the environmental department of the Water Treatment Plant so they will maintain the dikes and the vegetation.
Thnaks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

Hey Ed,
Thanks for the kind words. I would have loved to hear your explanation to your daughter. Its not a Disney World in the Wetlands.

Hey Sid,
The shutter speed was way to slow to get a BIF shot and I was surprised that it came out as well as it did.

Hi Harry,
I havn't spotted one of these guys around my neck of the woods. Is there a paticular area/locale (ie woods, swamp, or lake) the Caracara prefers to "roost"? Thanks for sharin'.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the response. I kept waiting for Andy to show up and fight the Caracara for the turtle. :rofl
I felt sorry for the turtle too. What helps right now is to imagine a certain someone in the place of the turtle and then I don't feel so sorry. :evil

Don't know about FL, but the Caracara is fairly common in Rio Grande Valley in south Texas. From Corpus Christi to Laredo and south throughout northern Mexico.

They are not widespread in Florida. The main US population is in Texas. According to Sibley's they prefer the "open savanna or desert". What they are doing in my swamp is beyond me. :dunno

and of course they like the open savanna better lots of venison carrion to eat. That beats turtle on the whole shell every time.

Thats a good shot. I've never seen that many at one time before. I ca understad their preference for venison over turtle, taht would be my choice too. :D
