I've reluctantly decided to no longer use Smugmug's geographic functionality, and to use Google's my-maps instead.
The main reasons were
1) The zoom level with the smugmug interface was almost always wrong (showing just a single photo)
2) The interface to the smugmug "Map this" function isn't particularly customisable. In particular, I'd like to apply themes to it, and to remove the timeline feature
Fortunately, it's possible to have the best of both worlds, and seamlessly integrate the maps into smumgug.
For people's information, I've done a mock-up of the features that I would like in a mapping interface:

Can I ask how you added the Google My Maps page to your SM site.
I just added the map thru SM and not 100% satisfied and looking for alternatives. I have a basic My Maps set up thru Flickr right now.
Just looking for some details on how you set it up and added it into your SM site.

In Google MyMaps, on the "link to this map" option, I selected customise, and chose a window size that suited me. I then took the code, and pasted it in the description of a new gallery, surrounded by <html> </html> tags
Finally, I forced the gallery to "journal mode", and used the "html gallery" CSS to hide the no-photos message.
As a bit of extra house-keeping, I keep all of my maps in a category called "Maps", and use the vanity-URL script to redirect the maps category to the global map. (This means that anyone navigating the breadcrumb will go to my global map, rather than the category page.)
