View Full Version : Fuzzy Thumbnail

I recently changed the imgBorder size in http://www.burlesondesigngroup.com/galleries/ from 100X56px to 150X84px.
The thumbnails all look fuzzy now, and I don't know exactly how to update the photos so they look crisper. I have tried choosing a different photo to feature - didn't work. I have tried to zoom thumbnail - didn't work.
I think when Smugmug makes the thumbnail photos, it automatically sets it to 100X56px, such as one shown in http://www.burlesondesigngroup.com/photos/246795186_uFAoP-Ti-4.jpg. This photo should be sized at 150X84px, since I used the zoom thumbnail tool - but it didn't work.
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately we don't have control over the size of the thumbs shown on the galleries page. If there are 5 or fewer galleries, then a thumb of 150x150 is used, and if there are more than 5 a thumb of 100x100 is used. My guess is what is happening with your imgBorder specification is that the smaller thumbs are being stretched, causing the fuzzy images.
I'm not aware of any way to change that behavior on the standard SmugMug category or subcategory screen. But - if it's only one page, it is not too hard to replace the galleries page with an html-only gallery. That's what I did because I really wanted larger thumbs.
If you want to see the difference, take a look at the page linked from Gallery on my home page (which is an html-only gallery where I can specify the size of the linked photos) - http://www.denisegoldberg.com/gallery/3242019 - as opposed to the galleries page which still exists but which I don't display from my navbar (and which you can only get to with an explicit url) - http://www.denisegoldberg.com/galleries.
Let me know if I can help at all if you decide to change your portfolio page. I'm at work and probably won't be able to jump in with detailed help until the evening, but I'll try to check in periodically. (I'm sure that there are others who can help in the meantime...)

Is this what you would do if you wanted say a page with 3-4 large images to point to say galleries for "weddings", "miztvahs", and "portraits"?

An html-only page would certainly work for your purposes.
Keep in mind though that smugmug will generate 150x150 thumbs if you have 5 or fewer galleris in a category. With your proposed 3-4 galleries, you will be getting the larger of the two-sized thumbs. That said, my html-only Gallery page is using 190x190 for the images, and my html-only Kaleidoscope page is using 300x300 for the images. I prefer the larger sizes.
I'd actually prefer larger thumb sizes on all of my category and sub-category screens, but I'm not willing to take on the maintenance of separate html-only galleries for every category and subcategory.

You can easily build a page that looks like that one. You can use the same tool that was used on that page, or you can keep it simple and use a combination of <a href= and <img src= html statements. The pages I referenced in my previous post are a pure smugmug play, no outside software needed.
The page that you referenced is using a tool called simpleviewer. A quick search got me to this page - http://www.airtightinteractive.com/simpleviewer/. Looks like there is a free version and a not free version, but I didn't read far enough to see the differences. If you're going to use a tool like this instead of a pure SmugMug page, you'll probably need a place to store the files needed by the tool.

He used Simpleviewer to make those large images? I know he used it for the galleries those images are linked to but I didn't think he used it for the big images.

Sorry, I meant he used simpleviewer for the next page(s). I'm not sure how he created that page because when I do a view source I don't see the html I would expect if he used <img src= statements.
Are you trying to build a page with something like simpleviewer, or are you simply looking for a way to show a few large images with links to the galleries?
To show a photo plus have it link to a gallery, you would use a combination of an <a href= statement and an <img src= statement. For example, here's html to display a random photo from your portfolio portraits gallery (assuming that it's entered in a gallery on your site, since I used the shortcut URL without your site name), clicking on the photo will enter the gallery:
<a href="/gallery/2447908_gWabc">
<img src="/photos/random.mg?AlbumID=2447908&Size=650x650"></a>
You can use the normal sizes (small, medium, etc.), or you can use custom sizes like the 650x650 that I used in the example. More details at http://www.smugmug.com/help/custom-photo-sizes.

Something like that, I'll play around with it for a while and see what I can come up with. I'll start another thread if I need more help, think I've probably hijacked this one more than I should have already.
Thanks again.

Hi Denise,
Thank you very much for the clarifications!
I ran this by my boss, and he has decided to go back to the standard version. He doesn't really want to customize by hand-scripted HTML, since I am the only one in the office who can do that.
Thank you again. You have been so helpful!
