I visited Merritt Island the morning after the shuttle launch. The park was finally open. Just our luck we had some poor light to shoot with and not many birds.

I don't know what it is about reddish egrets...but I only seem to find them in overcast poor lighting conditions. I bump up the ISO to 800/1600 and boost exposure to +EV 1 to 2... and wing it from there. One of these days I'm going to find this bird in sweet light. I do like the effect though. Here are a few I worked up.

Thanks for looking.

Having a little Deja Vu come over me. These shots remind me of last years MI4 adventures to Ft. Desot in Tamp with Kevin Paavola. It was a day much like the day I took these shots...except it was much colder and drizzling. One from last year about the same time.

About as good as you can get it that kind of light! We don't have as many reddish egrets here, but I've only seen them in overcast lighting! :dunno

Thanks Glenn. That lighting thing puzzles me. :scratch :dunno I'm sure one of these days I'll get one of these reds walking in my living room with good floor light lighting. :D

I only saw two this trip, one was a juvi that I screwed up on the shots and the other was an adult that was really really far away. They are definitely one of the prettiest birds I've seen.

#5, #6 and #7 work best for me, but good shutter punchin' in poor conditions.

Lovely set of images, Mike.

I think I like the last one best though. Soft light can be a good thing too, can't it?

Hi Mike

Nice set of shots. Great job with the exposure! The last one is my favorite, exquisite detail and strong composition with the reflection.

Hang on....I need to turn off the A/C .... I can't hear you. Harry gives you grief about your weather. That's too bad. :rofl :rofl :rofl I'm glad I'd never do anything like that. I'm too busy going out in my shorts & T-shirts on the boat and shooting the ospreys off the warm sunny beach. :D
