Hi all,
I'm off to Europe for a month at the end of this week, and was interested in buying more memory for my Sony 717. There are so many different types of MS out there, could anyone please recommend/comment on what works for this camera. I see that B&H photo is selling a Sandisk 1Gb MS Pro for about $110 - would this work?
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Remember when you loose (possible defect or theft or whatsoever) 1gb of pictures it's a lot worse than just loosing 256mb.
I recommend you therefore don't bet on one card only. Split it up on several smaller sticks.

Harry & Rainforest,
Thank you both for your replies. As for the possible loss of a MS, I should know as I just lost one (albeit just 32 Mb) when my freezing hands dropped it through the cracks of the Brooklyn Bridge last week. Luckily, it was empty at the time too.

Although the 717 is the first Sony to be MS Pro compatible, it's not optimized for it so there's no real speed advantage. So don't pay extra for MS Pro over regular ones.
I have tried Lexar's cheaper MemorySticks, and they are the only ones that have had errors causing me to lose photos, so mine are backup only.
I agree that more, smaller sticks is preferred. But I also use a Sony MS Case to keep track of them.

J: I have a 1GB SanDisk MS Pro Extreme III that I use in my 717. All of the other Memorystick types will also work. I've personally used Sony's MS, MS MagicGate (the original), MS Pro, MS Duo, MS Pro Duo, SanDisk MS Pro, SanDisk MS Pro Extreme III. (All also work in my (highly recommended) Lexar JumpDrive Trio reader/flashdrive).
H: The MS Pro models are faster in-camera than the regular MS. The MS Pro High Speed, SanDisk MS Pro Ultra II and SanDisk MS Pro Extreme III are no faster in the 717 than the other MS Pro types, but they'll help to "future-proof" your purchase (if that's a consideration).
J: So get any flavor you'd like. The bigger the better.
H: And see if you can offload your pics occasionally and have them burned to a CD/DVD.
Have fun on your trip!

Thanks for the reply Keith and J&H. Just to clarify, is the MS Pro going to be faster in the 717 or not?
J&H: I don't plan on upgrading further in the sony line, as one day I'd like to move up to a Canon/Nikon style dSLR. Guess I'll just stick with the basic MS for now. As for the CD/DVD burner, do you have any suggestions for some form of portable device I might use during my travels?
Thanks all,
Kevin

Just to clarify, is the MS Pro going to be faster in the 717 or not? J: The MS Pro is about 10 to 20% faster shot to shot, and shot to review than the regular MS.
H: It's not a huge amount, but I take every microsecond I can get. Especially with the 717.
J: As far as a portable storage device, I'm still waiting for the perfect model. I can't believe manufacturers are so far behind designing these things. It's criminal!
H: Ideally it would be a DVD burner with built-in card reader and LCD display. About the size of a portable DVD player.

Visited B&H in Manhattan today and picked up a 512 Mb MS Pro. I figured that a single card was better overall for my purposes, plus I have several other smaller ones. Thanks all for the help- I hope to get some great captures during the next few weeks in Europe.

I have used it on trips and do recommend it. Good luck on your trip,, looking forward to seeing some shots from it.

Listen to tunes while you shoot, then download your pics directly to the player!
H: 40GB fo $400, great battery life, decent LCD.
J: Only wish it had video out, but it can't provide everything.
H: Looks like an ipod killer. I'll have to add it to my wish list.
Thanks for the link.

BTW, have fun across the pond Kev.
