but here's one of my latest shots of Lukas for whipping. Despite what he looks like here (he was actually just finishing a yawn) feel free to beat up on him (and me).

As much as I want to like this, I can't generate any feeling about it. It is reasonably well exposed, reasonably well composed (altho it looks like the animal has only 3 legs) but there is nothing about the image that evokes any emotional response in me.

Great capture! (what a smile...:dunno ?)
Subject needs a bit of pop though. I'd try adjusting the levels and curves, some selective sharpening of the subject and blurring the BG juuust a touch. And if you're a whiz, maybe show us his fourth leg.
Is this your dog? Good looking guard dog!

Thanks Lew and Van.
Lew, I understand the comment but I'm not sure how to correct it. Maybe there isn't really a correct answer.
Van, He's not a dog at all. He's a canadian gray wolf that lives in a conservancy where I volunteer.
Here's the 4th leg and your other suggestions.
Anybody else??

His new leg really doesn't work and it now looks like he's had his tail lopped off...my opinion is to just reshoot its a good photo but I don't see how it can be saved sorry

I disagree. I like the original image quite a lot, and I like the original detail in the background. It's dark enough that it's not distracting to me, and the wolf stands out well againt it. And, the detail gives some context. If it's all fuzzed out he could just as easily be in a zoo.
The apparently missing leg is a problem, and I agree that the Photoshopped leg looks unnatural. But, if I am not mistaken, I think I can see a bit of the fourth leg in original. I'm wondering if that bit could be selectively lightened just a wee smidge so it would be noticed. Just a thought -- might not work.

Try dodging in the back leg. throw a curves on it till you get the background less distracting. The second image was a little disturbing. ;) After you get the background in a good spot use a history brush to bring your puppy back to a happy place! Our you could use a mask and achieve the same results. I would do the latter. OH! and save those eyes! I think this image has great potential. Some quality time spent with fido and hell be smiling in no time. K maybe not smiling....

JayMitch and Wacer thanks for the suggestions.
Wacer, i usually work in layers and soft brush erasing so we are in sync on that. Will try this again tomorrow so please stop back to check.
Thanks again.

Okay people, this is my last shot at it.
Took the suggestions, went back to the original, lightened up his back leg and sharpened his eyes a bit.
Thanks to all for the suggestions to make this better and for the reactions, positive or negative, to the image as a whole.

Personally, John, I think this is a perfectly exposed white box ;P. Hehe, all jokes aside, what happened to this photo?

Mike,
I'm good at those white boxes aren't I. On the other hand, Lukas must have taken off so I brought him back. Doesn't he look happy about it?
