On March 7th, on a futile search for minimalism, I went to the beach and took photos of sunsets. They were good photos as far as sunsets went, but were definitely not minimal, so I never worked them up.

A few days, a week ago, I "think" that Dixie said, and we all know how great his colors are, I could swear that he said that being him he used the shadow and highligts thing and saturation primarily. I stored that in my head.

Yesterday, I worked them up using those tools primarily. I sharpened, at the most, one photograph, as I just forgot. I use levels, so I used levels, but not on any automatic setting, just enough to do whatever I wanted to happen. These were taken in RAW. And worked up, all of them, using primarily shadows and highlights and saturation.

They were taken at my favorite beach on Sullivan's Island, outside of Charleston, South Carolina. I just want to share. I will try to put them out in the sequence that I took them. So they will be before sunset and after.

I know the one below is the last one, I got my shoes so wet, we had to take them all apart, and I couldn't wear them for three days. See, I don't plan well when I am taking pictures. I wanted to show from the surf to the dunes to the sky. And I did, not worth what I did to my only pair of shoes.

Not only is it a very interesting pic (nice perspective, awesome sky and great color), but IMO you also post processed it beautifully :clap :clap


The others are not bad by any means. I like what you are trying to do with color.

If you work with Photoshop and you like what you've come up with here, check out this site and download the Velvia/Provia Action. Either of these Actions will do alot of what you've done manually and maybe save you some time. They work wonderfully on landscapes and Sunrise/Sunset shots.

Ginger, you have two here which really catch my eye. It's the colors and the composition that work so well. And I am not a big fan of sunsets, we see too many of them. Nice work, Ginger.

BTW, my wife and I will be heading to the Charleston area the weekend of April 1st if you and your husband would like to get together. We can also try to work out a day set aside for photography if the weather will cooperate with us.

I'm all for shooting birds, the shrimp boats leaving or coming back into Shem Creek, the beaches for sunrises and sunsets, maybe some sailboats from the Battery, some shots of St. Phillips and other churches and buildings in old Charleston, and I especially would like to get some shots of the Morris Island Lighthouse (see links below).

The reason I am interested in the St. Phillips and Morris Island Lighthouse is because I just received my first Tilt-Shift lens and I am anxious to try it out. The one I got is the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L and I would like to re-shoot some of the structures that I've shot in the past now that I have the capability to correct perspective with the lens. Both St. Phillips and Morris Lighthouse are so tall that they appear to be falling away from you when you shoot them with a regular lens. Now with the T-S I will be able to make them appear normal as our eye sees them without having to manipulate perspective in PS.

At any rate, I've thrown out a few suggestions so if ya'll are interested we will make it a date for the first weekend in April. We will be arriving Thursday night and leave on Sunday morning. So we can pick either Friday or Saturday depending upon the weather for both days. We'll just pick the one that looks the best.

Don't forget about Cypress Gardens up near Moncks Corner as well. They have a butterfly house and other offerings.

Maybe you can work a deal with them to replace their photos for free reign to do photos in the gardens and swamp area. Just make sure that they understand that you will retain all rights to the photos.

What an eye you have, Ginger. These are really beautiful. I like the big sun and the kite boader (if that's what he is.) What sumptuious colors and what good composition. These are immersive photographs. They are so sensual that they make me smell the beach air and feel the warmth of the sun.
