the dang levels dialog box disappeared!!

aaargh! nothing frustrates me more when something appears one way and then all of a sudden, it appears another way.

When I go to adjust levels, I get the dialog box that you normally get when you choose an adjustment level layer on a high pass.....with a histogram looking thing.

but I want the box that has the diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right corner and has little dots on it where you can adjust a little bit here and there.

I've searched for help on photoshop for levels and it's all giving me the histogram looking example.

does anyone know how to help or what I'm talking about?
