After a little research and conversations, I will conclude that these are House Finches rather than Purple Finches. Still...very hard to be sure.

You would think that 560mm from about 25' would be close enough...not for these little ones.

I concur. They are house finches but they very well photographed house finches. There is a photographer friend I know "virtually" who posts with me at a Texas birders' forum and he actually has purple finches visiting him in east Texas.

Hi Ric.. Nice shots. These guys (at least at my house) don't sit still for very long, so nice captures on a little bird that is pretty hard to pin down.
