View Full Version : Trying to link to my Smugmug Images

I am posting on DPReview and want to embed images from SmugMug.

The problem is that the link needs to end in .jpg, and as far as I can tell, none of the links to my pictures end in .jpg.

How do I get around this?

Thanks, Russ

Hi Russ,

Start here:

http://www.russmacdonald.smugmug.com/gallery/3868879#224148567

Click the "Share Button"

be sure the "forums and blogs" link is active

Then click any of the photo links, use the "copy" button and it will go to your clipboard. Paste into the forum on Dpr.

the link looks like this:
http://russmacdonald.smugmug.com/photos/224148567-L.jpg

Size -L will be 800px wide.

You can also do CUSTOM size links for Dpr, and they would be like this:

http://russmacdonald.smugmug.com/photos/224148567-520x520.jpg
(520px is the exact width of the dpr message box).

Andy's already pointed you at the details, but the main concept you need to understand is that what you see in the URL bar in your browser when looking at your Smugmug images is the URL to a Smugmug page (which does not end in .jpg). What you need in dpr is the URL to ONLY the image. Follow Andy's steps for finding the actual image.

If you don't have right click protection on, you can just right click on the image in your page and grab the URL from the right click menu. In Firefox, it's "Copy Image Location" from the right click menu. In IE, you go to the properties page for the image and copy the URL from there.

Got it!

Never used the 'Share' button before.

I understand now. I have the right click protection on to keep my images from being downloaded. Not sure that's much protection, but I guess every bit helps.

Maybe I'll designate a special gallery for sharing and allow right-clicks there.

Thanks,

Most of the images I link to here and in dpreview I put in a private gallery that has no right-click and allows all sizes. Since it's private, nobody is browsing it and I don't need to worry as much about protection, making it easier to link to them. If that's appropriate for the images you were trying to link to, you might try that option. Then, you can right-click on them in the browser and easily get the link.

Excellent idea. I'll try that.
