Hmm...but the lower part of the book getting lost in shadow looks kind of odd.

I agree with no socks. I love the socks, and it makes for a great wall-hanger, but I think the theme is stronger without them. :D

Just saw this on the entry thread. Wonderful!! Nice lighting and an expression that nails it. Agree about the sox.

I also have a feeling that I see too much of a "dark matter". I think a tighter crop would benefit to the total impression...

Thanks all! I shot it with the intent to crop just below the book and that's the one I entered. After looking at the shot, I thought the socks were rather charming and contemplated leaving them in.

Charming - yes. However, it brings one more focal point to the picture (face, book, socks) and this way it loses its somewhat asketish look. :dunno

Thanks! I do tend to like a little too much breathing room on the edges of photos. I think it comes from cropping for print rather than the web. I took your advice and cropped it slightly tigher while maintaining the square aspect.
