View Full Version : Portland with Luben

Had a great afternoon with Luben yesterday, despite the positive weather forecasts it turned out to be flat and grey. Fortunately, Luben is full of ideas about how to make the best of the available light, and worked his way through an array of filters, 3 min exposures, vertical panos etc etc. Made me realize how much there is to learn, especially when I now start looking at his shots (http://www.dgrin.com/showpost.php?p=76128&postcount=1). Luckily for me he's more than willing to share and felt like I learnt loads. Cheers Mate!!
Portland is famous for its stone, all the local houses are built from it

Pulpit Rock, Taken around the same time as Luben's. See what I mean!

*note to self - gotta learn filters*
Yes, I see what you mean. Your last shot is very nice, and a gradient filter to warm up the sky would have made it even nicer.
But hey, this puppy's pretty darn good. :nod

And I really like this bad boy too.

May have to revisit that idea
Thanks

Very informative threads that you and Luben have posted. Very interesting. I need to get a couple of neutral density filters I think for Yosemite.

Gubbs,
These are really good :thumb :thumb Like Sid, the 4th and 5th shots knocked my socks off. Very, very nice long exposures.
See, that's another good thing about cutting your teeth on a prosumer. Especially one with NightShot, that urges you to invest in ND filters :rofl
Excellent work mates :super

Fantastic!! Beautiful shots!
Good show ol' chap...pip pip. Mate your punching out some colour there thats for sure. Love that blue house.
I sometimes have mixed feelings about blurred water (long exposures) sometimes I like the photos, sometimes I don't. You did good under poor light conditions -- but on the other hand, it's always good to see what someone else does to the same views, and the use of filters is good to learn.
Sounds like you and Luben had a good time, and had a nice trip to the area. Neat place with lighthouse and crazy rocks! I like the tidepool shot very much, and also the one of the rock and all the houses below... :):

Your shots are stunning & every bit as good as my efforts. I particularly like your rock pool & sunset shots.
:clap :clap :clap
I too learned a lot & really enjoyed your company. We need to start thinking about our next photo outing :-)
Talk to you later mate

Thanks Sid :thumb, I didn't use a filter on the top one, the light was fading enough to get a long enough exposure.
Following Luben's suggestion I used a polarizer to kill the reflections in the second.

Fred Thanks Fred, I was too concerned about the noise on my 10d to run 3 min exposures, I used a maximum of 60 secs, Oh and yes, I borrowed Lubens ND8 for a few shots
