this is a bull ant(mymercia) -its an agressive, venomous ant which will attack in defence of its nest-they were originally called bulldog ants by early settlers due to the powerful jaws.this old warrior came out after the younger ones failed to scare us off.my assistant photographer/ant wrangler was bitten on the finger and we had to call it a day.

the really big ones can approach two inches-

once you know what to look for in the bush it is pretty safe

GTC,
Nice shot of an ugly little bugger. :thumb :thumb Great DOF :clap
So what keeps their population under control? I mean, what preys/dines on them? Lizards with titanium tongues? :lol4
Thanks for sharing,
Steve

i think urbanisation is their biggest threat-they have remained unchanged for about 20 million years-i think lizards and birds would eat them and maybe echidnas...
