Trying to understand seo

I've been trying to figure out how to optimize my website so the search engines pick it up better. Therefore, I've been reading everything on this site. I noticed that it says search engines pick up on meta data. So, I decided to view the source on my page. Can I adjust the first meta data that appears on my page? How would I do that?
