View Full Version : Forcing SmugMug style for keywords results

I started this thread (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=80104) to enquire how I could overcome a problem I had encountered that when I made a keyword search in my SmugMug site (http://rosscollins.smugmug.com/keyword/), the resultant 'gallery' was in Slideshow style when none of my galleries are in this style. Andy sent me over here for help. :wink

What I want to do is to force a keyword search result to be in SmugMug style, irrespective of whatever the visitor may have been looking at previously, as I am able to prescribe for any other of my galleries.

Can any of our customisation gurus kindly help me to achieve this?

I, too, would love an answer to this question... it seems like the keyword search results page changes every couple months. Last year, I had it hacked to give me the Smugmug style on the results page, but that got broken with a release this year. Now anytime someone does a keyword search on my site, they get the results in "Journal" style -- which I really don't want.

Also, there has never been a way to force arrange photos in a keyword search results gallery -- you always get your most recently uploaded photos on top.

I would love a way to, once and for all:

1) specify the layout of the keyword search results page

2) specify (somewhat) the order of images on that page. I realize, because the page is dynamically generated, that there's always going to be some "slop" in the display order, but it would be great if, for example, I could rate images and have all my "5" images appear first, followed by my "4" images, etc... that way, at least, I can insure that my best images always appear at the top of a keyword search result page, rather than the most recently uploaded (regardless of it's quality).

These are issues I've struggled with for the two years I've been at Smugmug, and they still haven't been addressed. Even worse, whenever a workaround hack gets discovered, it gets broken in a subsequent release.

PLEASE, Smugmug gurus -- consider pointing one of your clever eyes at the Search and Display Results engine in Smugmug. Thanks.

They won't get journal unless they were cookied for it prior.

Right... but how does it get "cookied" and how can I take that cookie away? A few galleries on my site need the Journaled style. Most use Smugmug. How and when is the cookie set on a client's computer? Some client's computers display my Keyword search results using Smugmug and some using Journaled. I never give the customer a display choice, so what determines how the cookie is set? And, once set, how can I change it on client's computers? I know it's not "random", though it currently seems this way.

Again, I need some way of "forcing" a certain style upon a Keyword Search Results page. There used to be a javascript hack that did this but, when you did that major revamp a couple months ago, the hack broke.

Being a "control freak" (and, thus, a Smugmug Pro customer), I hate having no control over the appearance nor order of a keyword search results page. :cry

But wait, I hit ultrasomething's site and looked @ flowers and it showed up as 'journal' however my site shows up as slideshow.

So how could it be a cookie?

Same deal for me, I wanted a different view other than slide show to get some freinds to vote on some photos. You can't in slideshow.

So I am in the same bucket, need to force a 'view' for the keyword search.

I see the keyword results on ultrasomething's site as being in smugmug mode...

But I'd also like to echo everyone's desire for a re-enabled "style-change" hack, to allow us to link to a specific keyword result, in a specific style.

I just exposed keyword search and discovered that it's using the filmstrip gallery style and I need it to look like the rest of my site.

Add my name to the list needing control of the keyword results gallery style...

>> Update: I've moved around to other computers and some browsers are using my gallery style..

just wondering if there are any plans to reintroduce the 'template change hack' for keywords and popular photos? :dunno

seems to be a quite a popular request

thanks,
james

The keyword and popular gallery will pick up whatever style that is saved in
your cookies from viewing another gallery, probably on another's Smug site.
That's why the style picker should not be removed or you're locked in to that
style without removing the SmugMug cookies.

okay thanks allen, i have reintroduced the stylebar on my keywords/popular page

but i would still welcome the ability to be able to force the style so that it fits in with the rest of my site and doesn't confuse visitors

thanks

There are two types of galleries on smugmug: those with a forced style, and those which allow the user to choose the style. For the galleries where the user can choose the style, smugmug saves the last style chosen by that particular user. It is this saved user style that is use for the keyword results. (The style picker will allow the user to change style).

Unfortunately, there is a bug with the (no-longer-supported) javascript front-page slideshow which can sometimes change the saved style, if used with a keyword (or popular) gallery. If you still use the javscript slideshow, I would urge you to convert to the flash slideshow (despite the missing functionality).

Ok, sorry but I'm still very :dunno :huh :scratch :huh :scratch :huh :scratch :dunno

I get the two types of galleries. I kind of understand that for some reason, SmugMug keeps the last setting used, although I am not sure why it would keep someone else's style over mine.

Now, what front-page slideshow are you talking about???

What does a javascript slideshow have to do with keywords???

Since I have no clue what slideshow you're talking about, how do I convert that into a flash slideshow???

What missing functionality???

BTW, I've been up wayyyyyy too long doing homework, so pardon my lack of knowledge here...

Thanks for your help in advance...

But I don't have a front page slide show... so what does that have to do with the keyword question??? Dah, just noticed that. But if you visit any other SmugMug with the old show code it could mess the cookies.

Smug saves the viewing style in a cookie of the last visited gallery. If you
then go to a popular or keyword gallery it probably will show in that style.
That's why the style picker box is important, you can then switch to the
style you want. The bug mentioned above disables some of the functionally
of the picker and only removing your Smug cookies would clear the bug.

Probably? :dunno

It's the uncertainty about how this works and how it should work that this thread is all about! :scratch

So if someone goes to my site, then they go to someone else's site w/the bug, their cookie will get the bug and then I'm SOL until they clear their cookies???

By George... I think I'm catching up :D

This is important to me as a PRO user. Right now a keyword search can let the viewer select a slideshow format. Then a right click with the cursor over the image can print out a free picture. Way too easy.

Was there ever a solution to this issue. I used to be able to view my keyword pages in Smugmug viewing style but now they are in the thumbs style layout.

Any thoughts on how to change this?

My Gallery: http://gallery.wvuband.org/keyword/2007%20band%20staff
Want it to be in this style: http://gallery.wvuband.org/gallery/4126854_AK32M

Please help.

Thanks,
Chris
