Does anyone know if there are any commercial softboxes that will work with the 383 or do I need to break out the DIY elbow grease and fab something up like MacZippy? They would be on lightstands, not on the camera, if that makes a difference.

The DIY softboxes sure seemed easy enough. Enough so that I might
give it a whirl.

To answer your question though. There are several softboxes available
from Lumiquest (www.lumiquest.com). These will fold up nicely
into your gear bag.

Also, if you are looking for bigger softboxes, chimera and other make some for flash units:

I understand I would need some sort of ring adapter. Since I've never seen them in person, are there any pics or illustrations of how they would connect to the lightstand and/or flash unit?

Follow the link in Shay's post. Under accessories, you'll find the ring adapters
and you'll see how the flash attaches to the ring. Here (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Chimera-Speedring-Review.aspx)is another example.
To attach the thing to a light stand, you'll need a standard hot-shoe adapter.

For anyone following this or searching, I sent an email to Chimera (http://www.chimeralighting.com (http://www.chimeralighting.com/)):

"I have two Sunpak 383 flashes that I'd like to be able to connect
to some softboxes. Which speed ring would you recommend for the
Sunpak with a small optical slave? The 2620 or 2630? Would I
need anything else to get this working on a typical umbrella
bracket and lightstand?"

Their response:

"The best Speed Ring for you to use with the Sunpak 383 is the 2620 ShoeMount Medium. That should be all you need."
