Header and Footer Overlap Side Page Edge

With the great helps and tutorials I've created a header and footer that both work well. I scaled down their width trying to be sure they fit inside the page edges on the theme I'm using. Unfortunately some of the page edge and shadows are covered or hidden - oddly enough not necessarilly the same amount as the height of the header or footer. What am I doing wrong?
