Here's your photo assignment for this week: Transportation in motion.

Photos must be fresh - taken this week, not stuff you've got hanging around on your computer.
Transportation in motion means the primary focal point of your image should be depicting some form of transportation in motion, as opposed to stationary (no parked bikes, etc).
Have at it.

Note: The moderator team agreed to have the assignments last for an entire week, rather than a weekend to give people more chances to get out and shoot.

if there is anyone who has comments let me know cuz i am very new to the Photography thing. I bought a book on photography and bought a cheap canon 35mm and liked it. Then got my tax returns and bought a digital and love it. Took over 1k pics last week. I'm in the navy and stationed on a carrier. So i should be able to have some nice shot by the time i get back.I will have to talk to some people to see what pics i can show and what ones i can't. Plus i just got photoshop 7 and will play with that alot over the next 3 weeks. I should still be able to post but no uploading pics.

Kid, I know exactly where you got those shots. GREAT piccie of the trolley! I bet the city would like to use that, looks great (in my humble opinion). When I lived there we had a little boat and would tie off not too far from there to visit downtown. Of course, boating in Mission Bay's fun, too, go to the Barefoot Bar by boat.. In any event, I like the shots. Downtown gives you so much to work with.

Next stop: Hillcrest! (The land of well-decorated homes.)

The freeway shot is nice. So's the trolly.

Give us some shots of downtown from Coronado. Especially if the towers
are lit.

Good luck on your deployment. Stay safe.

Been a while since I was down that way. Forgot about that.

I don't know if this will work or not. At night, you can get away with
covering a part of the lens during the exposure. Astro-photos are often
"interrupted" by covering the scope when a plane flies by. Maybe you
could shield the park for a part of the exposure?

No, I haven't seen that area in a couple of years. I've been too busy pouting that Jack Murphy Stadium was renamed (blech) Qualcomm Stadium.

I had two favorite launches in San Diego bay, Shelter Island (can't beat their all-night parking with a stick), and Glorietta. I liked fishing under piers 13-17 (barring tugboat traffic, I really hate getting swamped by those deep wakes).

Used to do the Glorietta thing for July 4th for many, many years. And guess what - I moved down there for a job w/Petschmo at their corp. HQ when they set up an aquatics distribution center. Talk about a charge, I started working in August, right before the Air Show, the Blue Angels did their low-to-ground practice runs practically over our heads. CONTRAILS! YEE HAW! <shiver>

I'm going to submit my own interpretation of "transportation".

Bees, their transportation method is by wing, and in this shot we see one that has just loaded up on water from our pond. I can't believe I got her just as she began to take wing!

(Bees and other bugs on-the-wing are definitely difficult to get nailed down.) I have other shots, but am doing some major kernel recompilation these past couple of days, and haven't got photo-editing programs I like working with in the Windows environment. I want to despeckle this pic a bit, and hopefully I haven't lost too much detail with the compression ratios here. I'm trying the free d/l of ImageForge, and plan on d/l'ing IrfanView in future.

In any event, the assignment wasn't limited to human transportation only, so.. :wink

The shots were done with a Nikon D2h. There are a variety of flash settings on the camera. The one I used is "rear sync". It fires the flash at the end of the exposure rather than the first part of an exposure. With a standard flash and longer exposure you would get the car or object fixed then colored lines running through the image. With rear sync you pick up the images from tail lights etc and then at the end of the exposure the flash fires capturing the subject.

The type of flash should not make any difference as this is an in camera setting.

i'm not an expert by any means, but it seems to me that the slaves do what the master tells them to do (or they go without their supper). so if the master is firing on rear curtain, I would assume the slaves would follow suit.

For the Triangle Assignment (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=736) I submitted two really bad pictures of Bartle Hall. Last night I did a re-shoot. The building makes a much better night-time subject. An additional benefit was light trails made by cars. So now my triangle subject is also my transportation in motion subject.

The 420EX should do the same as the 550. It works fine on my lowly G3, surely it would do the same on the 300D? :dunnoWell, yeah, if I had a 420EX. I'm just working with the built in.

I have a poor habit of not checking all of my camera's settings. It's caught me out a few times. On Saturday I not only picked a poor location... but I forgot I had set the thing to ISO 400. Ugh.

Played around in Photoshop and got this looking much better.

http://ab0wa.smugmug.com/photos/3050888-M.jpg

This is a composite of two images. One was 10s @ f/8, the other was 1s @ f/8. The 10 second exposure makes up the bulk of the image.

Kim thats one cute lil baby. I wanna eat em up! :D You could photoshop it and pull out some of that vibrance.

And Cletus I like the captures you got going there. Ive been going buckwild with the longer exposure shots the past few days. Its kinda new for me, so I'm still testing fstop settings with shutter speed, while using different filters. Its kinda tough to pull off in daytime cause everything gets so blown out. And another thing that sucks is my camera has a maximum of 8 second exposure. Guess I can still do a little with that, but I really wish I could control it more.
What camera you using??

If you drove through Kansas City there's a very good chance you drove right past this spot. It's where I-70 and I-35 (the only two interstates that go through Kansas City) meet.

Hi Lynn. :wave

The shot through the bar window was 4 seconds at f6.3, ISO 400.

The street shot was 3.2 seconds, f8 at ISO 400.

I'm really dumb. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get longer exposures... I'm used to being able to get at least 6-12 second exposures. I remembered to turn on the internal neutral density filter... but never looked to see that I had left the camera on ISO 400. I usually leave it on 50, rarely mess with it... and obviously, I don't pay much attention to anything in the display save for the shutter speed and aperature size. :doh

All:

This pic doesn't meet the rules, as it was shot last October, but I figured it would be a good enough excuse for a first post to say howdy! Found the site through smugmug, and I caught the digital bug last year. First with a Nikon 2100, and then after both the original and warranty unit died, a Kodak DX6490. Looking forward to getting back to the track to try out the 10X lens :wink

Anyway, this pic is Turns 10A & 10B at Road Atlanta during night practice for the American Le Mans Series (http://www.americanlemans.com/home/index.asp)cars for the Petit Le Mans 1000km sports car enduro.

Hmmm... the iso on my camera does'nt go down to 50... starts at 100 .. neutral density filter???:huh

Dunno if ISO is truly a universal measure in digital cameras. I've read reviews that call one camera's ISO 60 the same as another camera's ISO 100. :dunno

But even if your 300D is constrained by a faster ISO, you benefit from a much broader f-stop range on your camera. You're only limited by the minimum f-stop of whatever lens you're using, whereas I stop at f8. So you can get good trails by stopping down to f22, maybe more.

The Neutral Density filter, as I understand it, is a transparent filter which cuts down the incoming light by a measured amount. It does not affect colors. On your SLR, you would decide whether you want to cut the light by 1 stop, or 4 stops, for example, then attach the appropriate neutral density filter to the lens. Again, by limiting the amount of light getting in, you can do longer exposures, and thus get better trails.

My camera has a version of a neutral density filter. It's an internal function. It's either on or off. When it's off, my camera lets in one or two less stops of light... not sure exactly how much less, the manual doesn't say and I can't remember what the settings say when I change it.
